Xerox® WorkCentre® 6655 / 6655i Software Installation Instructions

Introduction

A new firmware update is available for Xerox® ConnectKey® Technology-enabled multifunctional printers. This update contains the latest improvements and can be performed on devices running software versions starting with 072 or 073.

Identifying the Device Software Version

To identify your device's current software version, follow these steps:

  1. Open an Internet browser window on your computer.
  2. Enter the device's IP address in the address field in the format http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx and press Enter. The CentreWare Internet Services home page will display.
  3. Select the "Status" tab, then select "Configuration Report".
  4. Scroll to the "Common User Data" section to find and record the "System Software Version".

Printing a Configuration Report

It is important to print and keep a Configuration Report for reference after the software update is completed.

  1. At the device, press the "Machine Status" button.
  2. Touch the "Information Pages" button.
  3. Touch "Configuration Report", then touch "Print".

Visual Description: This involves interacting with the printer's control panel, accessing information pages, selecting the configuration report, and initiating a print job.

Upgrade Procedures

There are two methods for upgrading your device's software:

Automatic Upgrade (Recommended)

The Xerox® ConnectKey® Technology Software Upgrade Utility is recommended for an automatic and easy-to-use upgrade process. Follow the instructions provided on page 2 for this method.

Manual Upgrade

If you encounter issues with the automatic upgrade, a manual upgrade process is available. The specific instructions depend on your current software level. Consult the table below to identify the correct procedure:

Note: The software version being installed must always be higher than the currently installed version for a successful upgrade.

Xerox® ConnectKey® Technology Software Upgrade Utility - Automatic Upgrade

This utility automatically updates devices running software versions 072.xxx.xxx.xxxxx or 073.xxx.xxx.xxxxx to a later version, including all required patches. A specific version of the utility exists for each device family. The utility validates the device type and administrative credentials before starting. The total upgrade process can take 1 to 2.5 hours, during which the device will be inoperable. Ensure the device is free from faults and paper jams before starting.

Requirements

Procedure

  1. At the device, print a Configuration Report (see page 1) and ensure A4 or Letter paper is loaded in at least one tray.
  2. Download the ConnectKeySoftwareUpgradeTool.zip file and unzip it to your hard drive.
  3. Download the WorkCentre6655_Software_Upgrade_DLMs.zip file and store it in a folder. Do NOT unzip this file.
  4. Open the folder containing the CKUpgrade##.jar file. Double-click the JAR file (PC/Mac) or run java -jar <jar file name> (Linux).
  5. The initial entry screen will display. Click "Add Devices".
  6. Enter the device's IP address or hostname.
  7. Enter the device's Username and Password. If the device does not use the Admin password, select the "Open Access" checkbox.

You can add additional devices of the same or different product families using the "Add Devices" button. Ensure you download and store the upgrade zip files for each family in the same folder.

  1. Click "Next".
  2. In the "Choose Upgrade Folder" window, click "Select" and browse to the folder where you stored the Software Upgrade DLM zip file(s), then select "Open".
  3. Click "Verify". Address any errors displayed using the provided messages.

On the "Additional Install Options" screen, you can:

  1. Click "Continue" to list the devices to be upgraded.
  2. Click "Upgrade" to start sending the upgrade files to the verified machines.

Upon completion, the device will automatically reboot and print a Software Upgrade Report and a new Configuration Report. Congratulations on successfully upgrading your software for Xerox® ConnectKey® Technology.

Manual Upgrade - Part 1: Upgrade from Software Version 072.xxx.xxx.xxxxx to 073.xxx.xxx.xxxxx

Follow these steps to perform a manual upgrade from version 072 to 073:

  1. At the device, print a Configuration Report (see page 1) and ensure A4 or Letter paper is loaded.
  2. At the computer, install the pre-upgrade patch 788101v5.1.dlm:
    1. Access www.xerox.com/support, locate, and download the WorkCentre6655_Software_Upgrade_DLMs.zip file. Unzip it to your desktop, creating a folder named dlms.
    2. Open an Internet browser window. Enter the device's IP address in the format http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx and press Enter.
    3. Select the "Properties" tab. Log in using the System Administrator's User ID (default: "admin") and Password (default: "1111").
    4. Select "General Setup", then "Software Upgrade".
    5. If "Security Installation Policy: Not Allowed (Device and Remote Methods)" is displayed, select the "Allow Upgrade" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    6. Select the "Security Installation Policy:" link and enable all options to ensure all functions are accessible. Select "Apply". A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    7. Select "Software Upgrade" from the menu to return to the Software Upgrade page.
    8. Select "Manual Upgrade".
    9. Select "Browse", locate the dlms>WorkCentre6655 folder, and select "Open".
    10. Select the 788101v5.1.dlm file, then select "Open".
    11. Select the "Install Software" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".

    Note: If a printed sheet indicates the patch was not intended for the current version, ensure the device has software version 072.xxx.xxx.xxxxx installed. The patch is successfully installed when the Network Controller version shows 788101v5.1 appended.

  3. At the computer, install Software Version 073.xxx.xxx.xxxxx:
    1. Before proceeding, select "Logout" in the upper right area of the page and confirm.
    2. Select the "Properties" tab. Log in using the System Administrator's User ID (default: "admin") and Password (default: "1111").
    3. Select "General Setup", then "Software Upgrade".
    4. If "Security Installation Policy: Not Allowed (Device and Remote Methods)" is displayed, select the "Allow Upgrade" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    5. Select the "Security Installation Policy:" link and enable all options. Select "Apply". A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    6. Select "Software Upgrade" from the menu to return to the Software Upgrade page.
    7. Select "Manual Upgrade".
    8. Select "Browse", locate the dlms>WorkCentre6655 folder, and select "Open".
    9. Select the WorkCentre_6655-system-sw#073xxxxxxxxxxx#.DLM file, then select "Open".
    10. Select the "Install Software" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".

    Do not navigate away from the Internet browser during the file transfer process.

Software installation begins minutes after submission. All CentreWare Internet Services will be lost during installation, which can take up to 60 minutes. The device will reboot and print reports upon completion.

Manual Upgrade - Part 2: Upgrade from Software Version 073.xxx.xxx.xxxxx to a later version

Follow these steps to perform a manual upgrade from version 073 to a later version:

  1. At the device, print a Configuration Report (see page 1) and ensure A4 or Letter paper is loaded.
  2. At the computer, perform the software installation:
    1. Access www.xerox.com/support, locate, and download the WorkCentre6655_Software_Upgrade_DLMs.zip file. Unzip it to your desktop, creating a folder named dlms>WorkCentre6655.
    2. Check that the software version is later than the currently installed version:
      • Open the dlms>WorkCentre6655 folder.
      • Compare the last 6 digits of the software DLM file with the software version shown on the Configuration Report. The DLM file number must be higher for a successful upgrade.
    3. Open an Internet browser window. Enter the device's IP address in the format http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx and press Enter.
    4. Select the "Properties" tab. Log in using the System Administrator's User ID (default: "admin") and Password (default: "1111").
    5. Select "General Setup", then "Software Upgrade".
    6. If "Security Installation Policy: Not Allowed (Device and Remote Methods)" is displayed, select the "Allow Upgrade" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    7. Select the "Security Installation Policy:" link and enable all options. Select "Apply". A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
    8. Select "Software Upgrade" from the menu to return to the Software Upgrade page.
    9. Select "Manual Upgrade".
    10. Select "Browse", locate the dlms>WorkCentre6655 folder, and select "Open".

    12. Select the "Install Software" button. A confirmation message will appear; select "OK".
