About This Manual
This manual provides the necessary information for mounting, configuring, and using the CMeX10 Series product. It is intended for field engineers and developers.
The latest version of the documentation is available on the Elvaco website at http://www.elvaco.com.
Introduction
Product Configuration
The CMeX10 Series allows for the expansion of your CMe Series with up to 256 additional M-Bus slaves. These products feature standard M-Bus over IR communication and an IR Pass Through function for stacking. The modular and scalable design allows customers to select a level based on price and functionality.
The CMeX10S, CMeX11S, CMeX12S, and CMeX13S models also include an RS232 interface for use with standard RS232 communication devices.
Capacities
The CMeX10 Series can expand your CMe Series to manage up to 256 M-Bus slaves.
Applications
The CMeX10 Series is suitable for almost all types of meter data collection systems, including:
- Expanding CMe Series to manage up to 256 M-Bus slaves.
- Standalone M-Bus master for RS232 to two-wire M-Bus.
- Two-wire M-Bus split between two M-Bus masters using galvanic isolation via the IR pass-through function.
Physical Installation
Mounting
The product must be mounted on a DIN rail. The DIN stop (4) at the bottom facilitates mounting and dismounting from the DIN rail. For safety reasons, the DIN rail housing must cover the terminals.
Two-wire M-Bus Bus
The M-Bus is a multipoint, polarity-insensitive two-wire bus. Use a cable with a cross-section of 0.25-1.5 mm², such as a standard telephone cable (EKKX 2x2x0.25). Connect the wiring to the screw terminal (1, 2) or the direct plug-in terminal (6). Do not exceed the maximum cable length of 1000 meters (CMeX10, CMeX11) or 5000 meters (CMeX10S, CMeX11S, CMeX12S, CMeX13S).
IMPORTANT: Please consider the following points:
- CMeX10 Series products support between 32 and 256 slaves; ensure you use the correct model for your application. Bus overload will trigger the ERR indicator and shut down the M-Bus.
- All connected M-Bus slave devices must have unique primary or secondary M-Bus addresses, depending on the addressing mode used.
IR Interface with ABB Electricity Meters or CMeX Series Modules
When using the IR interface with an ABB electricity meter or another CMeX module, the IR protection (5) must be removed. The CMeX10 Series product must be mounted to the left of the ABB electricity meter. There should be no space between the CMeX10 Series product and the ABB electricity meter or other CMeX module. (Do not remove the protection if the device is not used next to an ABB electricity meter or CMeX module.)
RS232 Interface
Use the RS232 interface to use the CMeX10S, CMeX11S, CMeX12S, and CMeX13S as an M-Bus master with an RS232 to two-wire M-Bus interface. Connect the RS232 interface to the RJ45 connector (3).
Power Supply
Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician or another installer with the required knowledge. The power supply must be connected via a switch so that the device can be turned off during maintenance. The main power supply should be connected to the screw terminals (8) and (9). The main power supply voltage should be within the range of 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz. If a ground connection is available, connect it to the screw terminal (7).
Description of Applications
Power On
When powered on, the CMeX10 Series product performs an internal startup process before it can be used. The duration of this startup depends on the number of M-Bus slaves connected to the bus. The maximum startup time is approximately 10 seconds. During startup, the ERR indicator (red) is lit solid.
Normal/Idle Operation
In normal operation, the ERR indicator (red) is off, and the PWR indicator (green) is lit. During normal communication, the TX indicator flashes when there is communication between the ETTD and the two-wire M-Bus, and vice versa for the RX indicator when M-Bus slave devices transmit data to the ETTD.
Detection of Light Collisions (25 mA to 500 mA)
When the product detects a light slave collision, i.e., during secondary addressing, it sends a 45 ms interruption signal over the two-wire M-Bus and to the right IR interface. The product also sends an interruption signal (45 ms), parasitic characters (200 ms), and then another interruption signal (45 ms) to the ETTD (left IR interface and RS232 interface). This procedure allows for the detection of slave collisions in the ETTD even if the carrier used does not support interruption signals, i.e., TCP/IP communication.
Detection of Heavy Collisions and Short Circuits (>500 mA)
When the product detects a heavy collision, i.e., during secondary addressing or a bus short circuit, it disables the bus for 0.5 seconds. The product also sends a 45 ms interruption signal to the right IR interface and an interruption signal (45 ms), parasitic characters (200 ms), and then another interruption signal (45 ms) to the ETTD (left IR interface and RS232 interface).
High Idle Current
When the two-wire M-Bus is in an idle state and the idle current is too high (depending on the CMeX10 Series model), the product will disable the two-wire M-Bus interface and restart. The ERR indicator (red) will be lit solid in this state. This procedure will continue until the idle current is at an acceptable level for the CMeX10 Series model.

Troubleshooting
All Indicators Are Off
There might be a problem with the power supply. Please check the 100-240 V AC voltage. If the problem persists, the product may be defective.
Red Indicator Remains On
This indicates an error on the two-wire M-Bus. Check for short circuits on the M-Bus. The bus voltage should be between 21 and 42 V DC.
Unable to Read Connected M-Bus Slaves
Please check the M-Bus status:
- The voltage on the M-Bus slave device should be between 21 V DC and 42 V DC.
- All M-Bus slave devices must have unique primary or secondary M-Bus addresses, depending on the addressing mode.
- Check the baud rates of the M-Bus slave devices.
TX Indicator Remains On
When the CMeX10 Series product is stacked with other CMeX10 Series products and a short circuit occurs on a product to the left of the emitting product, the TX indicator may remain on. Check for short circuits on the products mounted to the left.
If you continue to experience problems operating your CMeX10 Series product, please contact Elvaco support; see section 1.2 Contact Information.
