Canon FC-45S Calculator Instructions

This document provides instructions and details for the Canon FC-45S calculator.

Power Supply

This calculator features a dual power source: a solar cell and an alkaline battery. The duration of the alkaline battery depends on individual usage. When the battery is exhausted, the solar cell can still power the calculator.

Note: Do not attempt to change the battery yourself. Contact a Canon Service Center for battery replacement.

Automatic Power-Off Function

When the calculator is turned ON and no keys are pressed for more than 7 minutes, it automatically turns off to conserve power. Press any key to restart the calculator; '0' will appear on the display.

Note: Electromagnetic interference or electrostatic discharge may cause the display to malfunction or memory contents to be lost or altered. If this occurs, use the tip of a ballpoint pen or similar sharp object to press the [RESET] button on the back of the calculator. After resetting, ensure you set the tax rate again.

Tax Calculation

Set the D switch to the "Tax" position to perform tax calculations.

Tax Calculation Keys
Key Function
[RATE TAX+] Store Tax Rate: Enter the tax rate figure, then press [RATE TAX+].
[RATE TAX-] Recall Tax Rate: Press [RATE TAX-] to recall the current tax rate.
[TAX+] Add Tax Amount: Used for adding the tax amount to the displayed figure.
[TAX-] Deduct Tax Amount: Used for deducting the tax amount from the displayed figure.

Examples:

Example 1: Add Tax Amount

Price $2,000 without tax. Calculate selling price with tax ($2,100).

Steps:

  1. Set the D switch to "Tax".
  2. Enter the tax rate (e.g., 5%). Press [RATE TAX+] to store it. (e.g., 5 [RATE TAX+])
  3. Enter the price: 2000.
  4. Press [TAX+]. The display shows the tax amount ($100).
  5. Press [TAX+] again. The display shows the selling price with tax ($2,100).

Example 2: Deduct Tax Amount

Selling price $3,150 with tax. Calculate price without tax ($3,000).

Steps:

  1. Set the D switch to "Tax".
  2. Enter the tax rate (e.g., 5%). Press [RATE TAX+] to store it. (e.g., 5 [RATE TAX+])
  3. Enter the price with tax: 3150.
  4. Press [TAX-]. The display shows the tax amount ($150).
  5. Press [TAX-] again. The display shows the price without tax ($3,000).

Currency Conversion

Set the switch to the "Unit" position to perform currency conversion calculations.

Currency Conversion Keys
Key Function
[RATE UNIT] Store Currency Rate: Enter the currency conversion rate, then press [RATE UNIT] to store it.
[RATE] Recall Currency Rate: Press [RATE] to recall the stored currency conversion rate.
[Currency Key] Convert: Used for converting the unit between Unit 1 and Unit 2 currency.

Example:

Convert 35 GBP to US$. (Using rate 1 US$ = 1.4724 GBP)

Steps:

  1. Set the switch to "Unit".
  2. Enter the rate: 1.4724 [RATE UNIT].
  3. Enter the amount in GBP: 35.
  4. Press the currency conversion key. The display shows 23.77071447.

Calculation Examples

Mixed Calculations

  • 140 - 35 + 22 = 127
  • 2x + 3 = 6
  • -7 x 9 = -63
  • (2 + 4) + 3 x 8.1 = 16.2

Constant Calculations

  • 2 + 3 = 5
  • 4 + 3 = 7
  • 1 - 2 = -1
  • 2 - 2 = 0
  • 2 x 3 = 6
  • 2 x 4 = 8
  • 6 + 3 = 9 (Note: OCR showed '2', corrected to '9' based on typical calculator logic)
  • 9 ÷ 3 = 3

Power and Fraction Calculations

  • 3 x 4 = 12
  • 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2
  • 1 ÷ (2 x 3 + 4) = 0.1

Memory Operations

The calculator has memory functions:

  • [M+]: Add the displayed value to memory.
  • [M-]: Subtract the displayed value from memory.
  • [MR]: Recall the value stored in memory.
  • [MC]: Clear the memory.

Example:

Store 123, add 6, then recall.

Steps:

  1. Enter 123. Press [M+].
  2. Enter 6. Press [M+].
  3. Press [MR]. The display shows 129.

Overflow Function

When "E" is displayed, the calculator's keyboard is electronically locked, and further operation is impossible. Press the [ON/OFF] key to clear the overflow.

The overflow function occurs when:

  • The result or memory content exceeds 10 digits to the left of the decimal point.
  • Division by zero.
