Nissan Rogue (2008) Interior Squeak and Rattle Troubleshooting

Symptom Diagnosis

This section covers the diagnosis of squeaks and rattles within the vehicle's interior.

Squeak and Rattle Trouble Diagnoses

Work Flow:

  • Customer Interview
  • Duplicate the Noise and Test Drive
  • Check Related Service Bulletins
  • Locate the Noise and Identify the Root Cause
  • Repair the Cause
  • Confirm Repair

Customer Interview:

Interview the customer to determine the conditions under which the noise occurs. Use the Diagnostic Worksheet to document facts, conditions, and customer comments. This information is crucial for duplicating the noise.

  • Obtain all facts and conditions, even if the customer cannot provide a detailed description or location.
  • If multiple noises are present, prioritize the one the customer is concerned about. A cruise test with the customer can help.
  • Isolate the noise by its characteristics. The following descriptions help ensure clear communication:
    • Squeak: Light contact/fast movement, often road condition-related, resulting in higher pitch on hard surfaces and lower pitch on softer surfaces. Can sound like chirping.
    • Creak: Firm contact/slow movement, twisting or rotational movement, pitch-dependent on materials. Often occurs during activity. Sounds like walking on an old wooden floor.
    • Rattle: Fast repeated contact/vibration or similar movement, loose parts, missing clips/fasteners, or incorrect clearance. Sounds like shaking a baby rattle.
    • Knock: Hollow sounding, sometimes repeating, often driver action-induced. Sounds like a knock on a door.
    • Tick: Gentle contacting of light materials/loose components, can be driver action or road condition-induced. Sounds like a clock second hand.
    • Thump: Heavy, muffled knock noise, softer than a knock, often activity-induced.
    • Buzz: High frequency rattle, firm contact. Sounds like a bumblebee.
  • Note that acceptable noise levels vary by individual.
  • Weather conditions (humidity, temperature) can affect noise levels.

Duplicate the Noise and Test Drive:

Drive the vehicle with the customer to duplicate the noise. Note additional information on the Diagnostic Worksheet. If duplication is difficult, try the following with the vehicle stopped:

  • Close a door.
  • Tap or push/pull the suspected area.
  • Rev the engine.
  • Use a floor jack to recreate vehicle "twist".
  • Apply engine load (electrical load, half-clutch, drive position).
  • Raise the vehicle on a hoist and hit a tire with a rubber hammer.

Drive the vehicle on undulating or rough roads to stress the body if necessary.

Check Related Service Bulletins

After verifying the customer's concern, check ASIST for relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). Follow the TSB procedure if applicable.

Locate the Noise and Identify the Root Cause

  1. Narrow down the noise to a general area using a listening tool (e.g., Chassis Ear J-39570, Engine Ear, mechanics stethoscope).
  2. Narrow down to a more specific area by:
    • Removing suspect components. Avoid excessive force on clips and fasteners to prevent breakage.
    • Tapping or pushing/pulling suspect components. Avoid excessive force, which may temporarily eliminate the noise.
    • Feeling for vibrations by touching suspect components.
    • Placing a piece of paper between suspect components.
    • Looking for loose components and contact marks.

Repair the Cause

  • If the cause is a loose component, tighten it securely.
  • If the cause is insufficient clearance:
    • Reposition or loosen/retighten components if possible.
    • Insulate components using urethane pads, foam blocks, felt cloth tape, or urethane tape. A Nissan Squeak and Rattle Kit (J-43980) is available.

CAUTION: Do not use excessive force, as many components are plastic and can be damaged.

NOTE: Always check with the Parts Department for the latest parts information.

Nissan Squeak and Rattle Kit (J-43980) Contents:

  • Urethane Pads (1.5 mm thick): For insulating connectors, harnesses, etc. Includes pads of various sizes (e.g., 100x135 mm, 60x85 mm, 15x25 mm).
  • Insulator (Foam blocks): For insulating components from contact and filling space behind panels. Includes blocks of 45 mm thick and 10 mm thick.
  • Insulator (Light foam block): 30 mm thick.
  • Felt Cloth Tape: For insulating areas where movement does not occur, ideal for instrument panels.

Additional materials like UHMW (Teflon) Tape, Silicone Grease, Silicone Spray, and Duct Tape can also be used.

Confirm the Repair

Test drive the vehicle under the same conditions as when the noise originally occurred to confirm the repair. Refer to the Diagnostic Worksheet notes.

Inspection Procedure

Refer to the Table of Contents for specific component removal and installation information.

Instrument Panel

Common causes of noise include contact and movement between:

  • Cluster lid A and instrument panel
  • Acrylic lens and combination meter housing
  • Instrument panel to front pillar garnish
  • Instrument panel to windshield
  • Instrument panel mounting pins
  • Wiring harnesses behind the combination meter
  • A/C defroster duct and duct joint

These noises can often be located by tapping or moving components, or by pressing on them while driving. Repairs typically involve applying felt cloth tape or silicone spray. Urethane pads can insulate wiring harnesses.

CAUTION: Do not use silicone spray to isolate a squeak or rattle, as it may prevent rechecking the repair.

Center Console

Check components such as the shifter assembly cover, A/C control unit, cluster lid C, and wiring harnesses.

Doors

Pay attention to the finisher and inner panel, inside handle escutcheon, wiring harnesses, and door striker alignment. Insulation with felt cloth tape or foam blocks is often effective.

Trunk

Common causes include loose jack or items, trunk lid dumpers, trunk lid striker, trunk lid torsion bars, and loose license plates.

Sunroof/Headlining

Noises may originate from the sunroof lid, rails, linkage, seals, sunvisor shaft, or windshield contact with the headlining. Insulation with felt cloth tape is a common repair.

Seats

Isolate seat noise by noting the seat's position and load. Causes include headrest rods, seat pad cushion contact, and rear seatback lock/bracket issues. Repositioning or applying urethane tape can resolve these.

Underhood

Interior noise can be transmitted from under the hood or engine wall. Causes include engine wall components, wiring harnesses, radiator mounting pins, and hood bumper/striker adjustments. Isolating these noises may require securing, moving, or insulating components, and adjusting engine RPM or load.

Precautions

This section outlines important precautions for servicing the vehicle.

Precautions for Mexico

For Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER":

The SRS system, along with front seat belts, helps reduce injury risk in collisions. Service information is in the "SRS AIRBAG" and "SEAT BELT" sections of the Service Manual.

WARNING:

  • All maintenance must be performed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer to avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase injury risk during a collision.
  • Improper maintenance can lead to personal injury from unintentional system activation.
  • Do not use electrical test equipment on SRS circuits unless instructed. SRS wiring harnesses are typically yellow or orange.

For Steering Wheel Rotation After Battery Disconnect:

NOTE: This procedure applies to models with Intelligent Key and NVIS/IVIS (NATS).

  • Disconnect battery cables before removing/installing control units, with the ignition in the "LOCK" position.
  • Use CONSULT-III for self-diagnosis after work.
  • For models with Intelligent Key/NVIS/IVIS, an electrically controlled steering lock is present. If the battery is disconnected or discharged, the steering wheel will lock.

Operation Procedure:

  1. Connect both battery cables. (Supply power with jumper cables if battery is discharged.)
  2. Turn the ignition switch to "ACC" using the Intelligent Key or mechanical key to release the steering lock.
