Installation and Operating Instructions
Welcome and Product Overview
Thank you for purchasing a Honeywell fire alarm. These alarms are suitable for domestic premises, including static holiday homes, and leisure accommodation vehicles (LAVs). This manual provides essential safety information for installation and operation. It is advised to have a fire evacuation plan and ensure all occupants are familiar with alarm signals.
Honeywell offers three models of battery-powered fire alarms:
- XH100: A heat alarm approved to BS5446-2:2003.
- XS100: An optical smoke alarm approved to EN14604:2005, using optical detection.
- XS100T: An optical-thermal smoke alarm approved to EN14604:2005, using dual detection for quicker response and fewer false alarms.
All models feature a sealed-in battery with a 10-year lifetime and warranty. They include clear status indicators: Green for Power, Yellow for Fault, and three large Red indicators for Alarm. All versions also have an audible alarm and a TEST/HUSH button.
Each fire alarm has a dot on its side indicating its type: a single dot for Optical Smoke Alarm, two dots for Heat Alarm, and three dots for Optical-Thermal Smoke Alarm.
Honeywell X-Series alarms can be wirelessly interconnected using an optional plug-in module (XW100). This ensures that if one alarm triggers, all interconnected units will sound a loud audible alarm (85dB), which is particularly useful in larger or multi-story dwellings.
Warnings: To prevent dust contamination during building work, remove or cover the alarm vents with a plastic bag or tape. Ensure the covering is removed daily. The alarm is permanently sealed for safety and should not be opened.
Fire Alarm Operation
Normal Operation: The Green POWER light flashes once per minute to indicate the unit is working, unless this feature has been disabled during installation (refer to installation instructions).
Alarm State: If smoke or heat is detected, the Red ALARM indicators will flash, and a loud audible alarm will sound continuously. Evacuate immediately and contact emergency services. If the alarm is believed to be false (e.g., from steam or cooking fumes), the TEST/HUSH button can silence it for 5 minutes while the air clears. Caution: Use a broom handle to press the button if the alarm is out of reach.
Fault State: A Yellow FAULT light flashes every minute with a short chirp, indicating the unit is not working properly or has reached its end-of-life. A wireless module fault is indicated by 3 chirps. If alarms are networked, a fault in one unit will cause others to flash and chirp every four hours. Faults must be investigated and cleared promptly. Check the 'Replace by...' date, battery, or potential sensor obstruction (dust).

Precautions During Use
The fire alarms require minimal maintenance, primarily cleaning the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. For smoke alarms (XS100T, XS100), ensure side openings are clear of dust or dirt. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and prevent contamination, which can inhibit operation.
Warning: Do not paint the detector.
During decorating or building work, cover or remove the alarm to protect it from damage, dust, or inadvertent operation. Ensure alternative safety measures are in place while the alarm is covered and inoperable. Remove protection when work stops for the day; failure to do so could be life-threatening.
Testing Your Alarm
Automatic Self-Test: The fire alarm performs a self-test every 10 seconds.
Monthly Test: Test the alarm monthly to verify all visual and audible signals. Press the TEST/HUSH button for 1 second for a full test cycle (reduced sound level). Hold the button for 10 seconds or more to test the full 85dB sound level. Caution: Use a broom handle if the alarm is out of reach.
Monthly Test with Wireless Function: To test wireless communication, press and hold the TEST/HUSH button on one alarm. After its full volume test, it enters a Remote Test state (red LED flash with chirp every 6 seconds), repeated by all interconnected alarms. Pressing the button again or waiting 10 minutes returns alarms to normal.

Installation
Siting Recommendations
General recommendations for battery-powered fire alarms in residential premises are provided. It is crucial to follow country-specific regulations, such as British BS5839-6 or German DIN14676, which may require interconnected mains-powered alarms.
Preferred Locations: Alarms should ideally be fitted on the ceiling, as close to the center of the room as possible, but at least 50 cm (10 inches) from any wall or light fitting to avoid 'dead air' pockets. For optimal detection, place alarms where they can be heard when sleeping, such as in hallways outside bedrooms, to provide warning from fires on lower levels.
Where to Install Smoke Alarms (XS100T and XS100): Ideally, install a smoke alarm in every room except kitchens, bathrooms, and garages. A minimum of one alarm should be fitted on every level, including stairways. The XS100T is particularly recommended for exit routes and stairways due to its ability to detect heat build-up.
Where to Install Heat Alarms (XH100): Heat alarms are suitable for locations where smoke alarms cannot be used, such as kitchens, bathrooms, or garages, as they are unaffected by fumes, vapors, or condensation.
Where NOT to Install Alarms
Smoke Alarms (XS100T, XS100): Do not install in bathrooms or kitchens where steam or cooking fumes may cause false alarms, or in garages where exhaust fumes could trigger them.
Heat Alarms (XH100): Do not install in locations where local regulations mandate a Smoke alarm compliant with EN14604. Consult your local fire and rescue service if unsure.
Mounting the Alarm
The alarm pack contains: 1 x Fire Alarm, 1 x Ceiling mounting plate, Plugs and screws, and Instructions.
Ceiling Mounting: The alarm must be fixed horizontally to the ceiling using the enclosed mounting plate. The plate can be screwed using the central hole or two slots. Fitting the alarm to the plate switches it on.
Wall Mounting: In some circumstances, wall mounting may be advisable, especially in tall vertical spaces like stairwells, to ensure detection of rising smoke and heat.
First Time Switch On: Fit the alarm onto the mounting plate approximately 10 mm off center, press firmly, and slide sideways until the locking tab clicks. The unit will automatically switch on.
Tamper-Proof Ceiling Mounting: A tamper-proof clip can be used to lock the alarm to the mounting plate. This clip should be removed before installation. Once fitted, a screwdriver is required to remove the alarm.
Switching Off the Alarm: The alarm is switched off by removing it from the ceiling mounting plate. Press the tamper-proof tab and slide the alarm sideways. If the tamper-proof option is used, a small screwdriver may be needed.
Deactivating the Power Light Flashes
The green power light flashes every minute to show the batteries are OK. This can be annoying in bedrooms. To deactivate this, press the TEST/HUSH button five times within the first 30 seconds after fully mounting the alarm. Successful deactivation is confirmed by five green flashes and short chirps.
Conformance
The XS100 and XS100T are tested and approved to EN 14604 for Construction Products Regulations compliance. The XH100 is tested and approved to BS 5446-2 for heat alarms. All models (XS100T, XS100, XH100) comply with current EMC and ROHS directives. The XW100 radio module complies with the R&TTE directive.
The product also carries the CE mark, confirming compliance with applicable European Directives, and the NF – Smoke Alarm Devices mark, assuring safety and quality inspected by experts, confirming compliance with certification rules NF 292.
Troubleshooting and Getting Assistance
If the alarm fails to work after reading the instructions, contact the nearest customer service center or your local supplier. For repair or replacement, use original packaging or a solid box/padded envelope with a fault description. Switch off the alarm before transit. Notify postal services about sealed batteries. Proof of purchase is required for warranty claims.
Recyclable Packaging
The Green Dot logo [Green Dot Recycling Symbol] signifies membership in an organization that collects and recycles packaging. The packaging is widely recycled using local facilities.
End of Life
This product complies with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC. Components with this symbol should not be treated as household waste. Waste electrical products must be recovered and disposed of at specialist WEEE facilities. Contact your local authority, distributor, or manufacturer for more information on WEEE recycling.

Honeywell is not liable for fire investigation or service call costs resulting from an alarm. Dust and insect contamination is unpredictable, considered normal wear and tear, and is not covered by the warranty.
Warranty
Honeywell warrants the fire alarm for ten years from the purchase date or until the expiry date on the unit, whichever comes first. Honeywell will repair or replace defective parts at its discretion. The warranty does not cover defects due to unreasonable use, neglect, improper storage, failure to maintain according to the manual, or tampering. This warranty does not replace statutory rights.
What to Do in Case of a Fire Alarm
- Raise the alarm by shouting or banging metal objects.
- Evacuate immediately using the nearest exit. Do not stop for belongings or pets.
- Use your escape route and meet at an agreed point.
- Close doors to slow fire spread. Check doors for warmth with the back of your hand; do not open if warm.
- Crawl low if there is smoke for better air and visibility.
- Once outside, call the Fire Brigade from a safe location, providing your name and address.
- Do not re-enter the building. Inform firefighters if someone is still inside.
- Wait for the Fire Brigade in a safe place and provide them with information about the fire and building.
