Lennox Heat Pump User Guide
Information for the Homeowner/User
Information for the Homeowner
CAUTION: Disconnect electrical power at the circuit breaker before performing any maintenance or repair work.
For optimal performance, the system must be properly maintained. Clogged filters or insufficient airflow will prevent the unit from operating at its peak efficiency level.
Heat Pump Operation
The user should familiarize themselves with the following features of the Lennox heat pump:
- The heat pump responds to heating demands by sending large quantities of warm air into the living space. This is very different from warm air furnaces powered by gas, oil, or electricity, which send smaller quantities of much hotter air to heat the living space.
- Do not be concerned if frost appears on the outdoor coil during winter months. This frost appears on the outdoor coil during the heating cycle when the temperature is below 7 °C (45 °F). An electronic control will initiate a defrost cycle at regular intervals for 5 to 15 minutes to defrost the outdoor coil.
- Vapor may be released from the outdoor unit during the defrost cycle. This is a normal phenomenon. The thermostat may engage auxiliary heating during the defrost cycle to meet a heating demand; however, the unit will return to normal operation at the end of the defrost cycle.
Maintenance to be Performed by the Homeowner
- Check the indoor unit filter once a month and replace it as needed. Ask your Lennox dealer to indicate the location of the indoor unit filter. It is either on the indoor unit (inside or outside the casing) or behind an air return grille on a wall or ceiling. Check the filter once a month and clean or replace it as needed. Disposable filters must be replaced with filters of the same type and size.
- The indoor coil is equipped with a pan and a drain line to collect and remove condensation that forms as the system removes moisture from the indoor air. Ask your dealer to indicate the location of the drain line and how to check that it is not clogged. Check once a month to ensure the drain line is not clogged. (This also applies to any auxiliary drain.)
- Check the outdoor unit once a month and remove any obstructions that may restrict airflow through the unit. These potential obstructions include grass clippings, leaves, and papers that are stuck to, or lodged between, the coil fins.
- Ensure that shrubs are properly trimmed and do not touch the unit; periodically check that debris has not accumulated around the unit.
- In winter, clear snow down to the level of the louvered panels.
NOTE – The indoor unit filter and all access panels must be in place at all times when the unit is operating. If you are unsure about the correct filter to use with the system, ask a Lennox dealer.
IMPORTANT!
No sprinkler or garden hose should be installed where it could cause prolonged exposure of the outdoor unit to treated water. Prolonged exposure of the unit to treated water (i.e., from sprinkler and irrigation systems, wastewater, etc.) will corrode the surface of steel and aluminum parts and reduce the unit's performance and longevity.
Thermostat Operation
Refer to the thermostat manual for operating instructions.
Checks Before Calling for Service
If the system fails, check the following points before calling a technician:
- Verify that the thermostat settings are correct.
- Ensure all circuit breakers are closed, i.e., in the ON position.
- Check that no fuses are blown and no circuit breakers are open.
- Ensure that the unit access panels are installed.
- Verify that the air filter is clean.
- The unit model number should be available at the time of the service call.
Prolonged Power Outage
The heat pump is equipped with a compressor crankcase heater that protects the compressor during cold weather operation. If the unit's electrical power has been interrupted for more than two or three hours, set the room thermostat selector to "EMERGENCY HEAT / CHAUFFAGE D'URGENCE" to provide temporary heating without risking damage to the heat pump. In EMERGENCY HEAT / CHAUFFAGE D'URGENCE mode, all heating demands are met by auxiliary heating; the heat pump operation is locked out. After a six-hour delay for compressor crankcase heating, the thermostat can be reset to "HEAT / CHAUFFAGE" and normal heat pump operation will resume.
Professional Maintenance
The heating and air conditioning system should be inspected and maintained twice a year (before the start of the heating and air conditioning seasons) by an authorized professional HVAC technician.
