PreSonus HP4 Owner's Manual
High-Quality Headphone Amplifier
SPL Warning
Exposure to extremely high noise levels may cause permanent hearing loss. Individuals vary considerably in susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss, but nearly everyone will lose some hearing if exposed to sufficiently intense noise for a period of time. The U.S. Government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specified the permissible noise level exposures shown in the following chart. According to OSHA, any exposure in excess of these permissible limits could result in some hearing loss. To ensure against potentially dangerous exposure to high sound-pressure levels, it is recommended that all persons exposed to equipment capable of producing high sound-pressure levels use hearing protectors while the equipment is in operation. Earplugs or protectors in the ear canals or over the ears must be worn when operating the equipment in order to prevent permanent hearing loss if exposure is in excess of the limits set forth here:
Duration per Day in Hours | Sound Level, dBA, Slow Response | Typical Example |
---|---|---|
8 | 90 | Duo in small club |
6 | 92 | |
4 | 95 | Subway train |
3 | 97 | |
2 | 100 | Very loud classical music |
1.5 | 102 | |
1 | 105 | |
0.5 | 110 | |
0.25 or less | 115 | Loudest parts of a rock concert |

Introduction to the HP4
Please use this manual to familiarize yourself with the features, applications, and correct connection procedure for the HP4 before trying to connect it to your recording system. Pay close attention when connecting the HP4 to your system, as bad cables and improper grounding are the most common causes of problems encountered in recording and live P.A. environments. We recommend checking your cables, connections, and grounding if you experience any noise or other sonic performance problems.
1.2 What Is In The Box
In addition to this manual, your PreSonus package contains the following:
- PreSonus HP4 unit
- 16 VAC, 1,000 mA Power Supply
Diagram Description: The box contents image shows the PreSonus HP4 unit and a separate power supply unit with a wall plug and a DC connector.
2.0 Quick Start Guide
This Quick Start guide is designed to help get your HP4 connected to your system as quickly as possible. The following step-by-step instructions are based on a common studio environment. Your actual setup may change based on your needs and applications.
2.1 Getting Started
Connect the Power
- Turn every knob on the front panel of the HP4 completely counterclockwise (left).
- Connect the included power supply to the HP4 and plug it in to a wall socket, power strip, or surge protector.
Connect Your Input Sources
- Turn down the main output volume on your audio interface or mixer to its lowest position.
- Connect the main outputs of your audio interface or mixer to the Left and Right TRS inputs on the back of your HP4. For the best sound quality, PreSonus recommends using balanced cables whenever possible.
- Connect the Left and Right Monitor/Thru outputs on the back of your HP4 to the inputs of your powered studio monitors or power amp (if your studio monitors are passive). This will allow you to use a single output pair from your audio interface or mixer to feed both your HP4 and your studio monitors.
Set Monitor Levels
- Connect a pair of headphones to the Phones 1 output.
- Play a CD, DAW session, or other audio recording that is typical of your studio productions through your audio interface or mixer outputs.
- Turn the main output volume of your audio interface or mixer to unity gain. You may need to consult the documentation that came with your device to determine the knob or fader position for unity gain.
- Begin turning up the Phones 1 volume knob on the front panel of your HP4 until your headphones are at a comfortable listening level.
- Begin turning up the Monitor Level knob on the front panel of your HP4 until your studio monitors are at a comfortable mixing level.
Your HP4 is now ready to use!
2.2 Hookup Diagrams
2.2.1 Using the same stereo source for multiple HP4s.
Diagram Description: This diagram shows how to connect multiple HP4 units to a single stereo source. It illustrates a source feeding into the INPUT of the first HP4, and the MONITOR/THRU OUTPUT of the first HP4 feeding into the INPUT of the second HP4, and so on, demonstrating a daisy-chain setup. Each HP4 has headphones connected to its outputs.
2.2.2 Connecting an HP4 and studio monitors to the same stereo source.
Diagram Description: This diagram shows connecting an HP4 and studio monitors to the same stereo source. A source feeds into the INPUT of the HP4. The MONITOR/THRU OUTPUT of the HP4 feeds into the studio monitors, and headphones are connected to the HP4's headphone outputs.
3.0 Hardware
3.1 Front-Panel Layout
Diagram Description: A front view of the PreSonus HP4, a compact audio device with four headphone outputs, each with a volume knob. It features a main "MONITOR LEVEL" knob, a "MONITOR MUTE" button, and a "MONO" button.
Headphone Volume: The HP4 has the potential to be very loud. Please be careful when you first start passing sound through the unit. It is best to start with the volume set at 1 and then slowly bring up the volume.
Note on Headphone Loudness: The loudness of your headphones will vary depending on their design and their input impedance. The output impedance of the HP4 is 51Ω (ohms), and it will work fine with professional and consumer headphones, but the volume will differ depending on which type of headphone you use. Headphones with lower input impedances will generally be louder than higher-impedance headphones. Most professional headphones have impedances between 150Ω and 600Ω. Consumer headphones for CD players and the like often have impedances between 8Ω and 32Ω. Broadcast headphones are specialized and typically have impedances between 1.5 kΩ (kilohms) and 2 kΩ.
Mono button: When you press the Mono button, each input will be summed together on each output. For example, if you plug a CD player into the left input, and press the Mono button, the signal from the left input will be present in the left and right headphone channels and in the master output. When the Mono button is not depressed, the left and right outputs will carry the left- and right-channel signals, respectively.
Monitor Level: The Monitor Level knob controls the volume of the rear-panel monitor outputs.
Monitor Mute: The Monitor Mute button mutes the main rear-panel outputs, which is handy when you only want to use the front-panel headphone outputs. This is especially helpful when recording in front of a computer and studio monitors; you can simply mute the signal going to the monitors rather than turn down the Monitor Level.
3.2 Back-Panel Layout
Diagram Description: A view of the HP4 back panel showing the 12V/1A power input, Left/Right Balanced Inputs, and Left/Right Balanced Outputs (Monitor/Thru).
Left/Right Balanced Inputs: These line-level inputs should only be used for signals from sources that do not require preamplification, such as CD and MP3 players, mixers, and audio interfaces.
Left/Right Balanced Outputs (Monitor/Thru): These are the line-level outputs for the HP4. The Monitor Level knob on the front of the unit controls their output level. These outputs can be used as a Monitor Thru or to connect another HP4 for additional headphone distribution. (See Section 2.1 for hookup diagrams.)
Power-Supply Connector: This is the connection for the external power supply.
