PreSonus AudioBox USB®96 Quick Start Guide

USB Audio Interface

Getting Started

Thank you for choosing the PreSonus AudioBox USB®96. You now have a state-of-the-art USB 2.0 audio interface featuring two Class A microphone preamplifiers, analog monitoring, 96 kHz high-resolution recording, and the Studio One Artist music creation environment.

Step 1: Register Your AudioBox USB96

  1. Visit my.presonus.com and create your MyPreSonus account, or log in to your existing account.
  2. Enter your AudioBox USB96 serial number and purchase date, then click Register.

Step 2: Download Your Software and Manuals

From your MyPreSonus user account, download the following:

  • Universal Control (Not required for Mac)
  • AudioBox USB96 User Manual
  • Studio One Artist software (Optional)

Step 3: Install Universal Control

Windows Users: Install the Universal Control and AudioBox USB96 Windows drivers. The installer is user-friendly; simply follow the on-screen instructions. The system will prompt you to restart your computer after successful installation. Click "Finish" to restart.

macOS Users: The AudioBox USB96 is a class-compliant Core Audio device, so no installation is required. Simply connect the AudioBox USB96 to your computer to begin using it.

Step 4: Meet Your AudioBox USB96

Front Panel:

  • Mic/Inst Inputs 1 & 2: Combo XLR/TRS jacks for microphones and instruments.
  • +48V Phantom Power Switch: Engages phantom power for condenser microphones.
  • Clip Indicators: Light up when the input signal is too hot.
  • Input Trim Controls: Adjust the gain for each input.
  • Mixer Knob: Blends the input signal with the playback signal from your computer.
  • Playback Knob: Adjusts the level of the computer's playback signal.
  • Main Level Control: Adjusts the overall output volume for the main outputs and headphones.
  • Power Indicator: Shows that the unit is powered on.
  • Headphone Level Control: Adjusts the volume for the headphone output.

Rear Panel:

  • USB 2.0 Port: Connects to your computer.
  • MIDI IN/OUT Ports: For connecting MIDI devices.
  • Main Out L/R: Balanced TRS outputs for connecting to speakers or other audio gear.
  • Phones Output: Headphone jack.

Step 5: Make Connections

  • Connect your computer to the AudioBox USB 96 via the USB 2.0 port.
  • Connect your speakers to the Main Out L/R jacks.
  • Connect your headphones to the Phones jack.
  • Connect a microphone to Input 1 using an XLR cable.
  • Connect a line-level instrument (like a keyboard) to Input 2 using a TRS cable.

Step 6: Install Studio One

Download the Studio One Artist installer from your MyPreSonus account.

  • Windows Users: Run the Studio One Artist installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • macOS Users: Drag the Studio One Artist application to your Applications folder on your Mac's hard drive.

Step 7: Authorize Studio One

When you launch Studio One for the first time on your computer, you will need to enter your MyPreSonus account information. After entering your account details, Studio One will scan your account for available Studio One product keys. Select a product key and click "Activate." Your computer must be connected to the internet to authorize and activate.

Step 8: Install Studio One Bundle Content

Studio One Artist comes with demos, instruments, loops, and samples to provide everything you need to start making music. When you first launch Studio One Artist, you will be prompted to install its bundle content. Select the content you wish to add, then click "Install" to download and install it from your MyPreSonus account.

Step 9: Start Recording!

  1. Launch Studio One Artist.
  2. From the "Start" page, select "Create New Song."
  3. From the template list, select "AudioBox USB."
  4. Name your song. Click the "OK" button when finished.
  5. Click the MIX button to open the console in Studio One.
  6. Turn the Mixer knob on the front panel of the AudioBox USB96 to the 12 o'clock position. This allows you to hear inputs and playback from your computer.
  7. Connect headphones to the AudioBox USB96 headphone output and turn the Phones volume control knob to the 12 o'clock position.
  8. Connect a microphone to Input 1. Speak into the microphone while watching the meter on Channel 1 in Studio One. Slowly turn the AudioBox USB96 Input 1 Trim knob clockwise until the signal is strong but not clipping.

You are now ready to record.

Click the "Record" button [record-symbol] in Studio One Artist to begin recording your first masterpiece!

Step 10: Learn More

To play back your recording, click the "Rewind to Beginning" button [rewind-symbol], then click the "Play" button [play-symbol] in Studio One Artist.
