Quality Testing for Fabric Durability
IKEA has tested the fabrics for sofas and armchairs to ensure durability. Abrasion resistance is tested by rubbing the fabric with another material using a machine. Furniture for everyday use should be made of fabric that can withstand at least 15,000 cycles of abrasion. If it can withstand over 30,000 cycles, it indicates very high abrasion resistance. All fabrics are also sensitive to sunlight, so IKEA also checks their resistance to fading.
Factors Affecting Durability
Rigorous testing is an important way to check the durability of cover fabrics, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Durability also depends on the material, construction, and how the product is used. Tightly woven fabrics with a flat surface are the most abrasion-resistant. Blends of natural and synthetic fibers are more abrasion-resistant than fabrics made solely of natural fibers. Piece-dyed fabrics are more durable than printed fabrics. Dirty covers wear out faster than clean covers. Of course, sofa fabrics are also affected by how they are used.
