Samsara AI Dash Cam Installation Guide
This guide provides instructions for installing the Samsara AI Dash Cam, models CM33 and CM34.
AI Dash Cam Diagram
The AI Dash Cam features a main unit with several labeled components. On the front, there's a speaker, an inward-facing camera (on dual-facing models, marked with an asterisk), and an LED. Below these are the dash cam button and microphone. The sides have alignment lines and increment lines. The top has a cable connection. The rear shows the mount with locking screws (Hex M3) on both sides. The mount itself attaches via an adhesive pad with a protective liner. The front-facing camera also has a protective liner.
What You'll Need
- 1x AI Dash Cam
- 1x Vehicle Gateway (sold separately)
- 1x Diagnostic Cable (sold separately, may vary by vehicle type)
- 1x Alcohol Wipe
- 1x Allen Key
- 4x Cable Clips
Installation Steps
Step 1: Prepare
Ensure your Samsara Fleet App is updated to the latest version before starting installation. Make sure your Vehicle Gateway is installed and activated. Confirm your vehicle is in an area with reliable cellular connection during installation.
Step 2: Mount Location & Clean
Identify the mounting location on the windshield and clean the area thoroughly with an alcohol wipe. For optimal visibility, position the camera below the rear-view mirror, within the windshield wiper sweep. Ensure there is clearance for the Allen key on both sides of the device.
Step 3: Attach Camera
Peel off the adhesive liner and press the camera firmly against the windshield for 30 seconds. Ensure no large air bubbles form between the adhesive and glass. Remove the protective film from the camera lens(es).
Note: If using the mount for an angled windshield (ACC-CM-BSHIM), install it onto the camera before mounting to the windshield.
Step 4a: Adjust CM33/CM34 Mount
Use the larger end (Hex M3) of the Allen key to loosen both mount screws before adjusting. Rotate the camera body so it hangs perfectly vertical, then lightly tighten the screws. Do not fully tighten until after the camera positioning is validated (Step 7).
For the front-facing AI Dash Cam CM33, skip to Step 5. For the dual-facing AI Dash Cam CM34, go to Step 4b.
Step 4b: Adjust CM34 Interior Camera
For CM34 only: Use the smaller end (Hex M2) of the Allen key to loosen the inward-facing camera screw before adjusting. Angle the lens towards the center of the cabin. Do not fully tighten the screw until after the camera positioning is validated (Step 7).
Step 5: Route Cable
Run the cable across the top of the windshield. Secure it with cable clips or tuck it under the glass seal around the windshield.
Step 6: Connect to Gateway
Plug the camera into the Vehicle Gateway's USB port. For best results, do not wrap the cable around the Vehicle Gateway or route it across the diagnostic cable.
Step 7: Confirm Installation
Turn on the vehicle. Confirm installation in either the Samsara Dashboard or the Fleet App:
- Samsara Dashboard: On the vehicle page, go to Settings under the ... menu and click Take Picture.
- Samsara Fleet App: Go to Install Devices under the ... menu, click Install new device, and follow the instructions for CM33/34.
If all points of interest are not captured (see example frames above), use the provided Allen key to loosen the cameras before re-adjusting. After all points of interest are captured, use the Allen keys to tighten both mount locking screws and, if applicable, the inward camera locking screw. Do not overtighten.
Note: You may need to take a short trip for the camera to begin recording. A trip is registered when the Vehicle Gateway reaches 5 mph (8 km/h).
