Refer to the special instructions included in the bumper package for installing this bumper set.
Installation
- Step 1: Remove the existing front bumper from the chassis.
- Step 2: Thread the winch hook and washer through the fairlead on the new front bumper. Ensure the washer is turned horizontal to fit through the fairlead.
- Step 3: Install the winch/winch mount onto the new front bumper. Place the winch power wire into the slot on the bumper. If installing the winch/winch mount on an existing front bumper, use the included 3x6mm pins in the fairlead.
- Step 4: Install the new front bumper.
Wiring Diagram
Route the power wire and antenna wire from the winch along the right chassis rail to the front shock tower. Secure the antenna wire to the loop on the servo mount with a zip tie. Route the power wire through the shock tower and over to the ESC. The red connector on the XL-5 HV ESC provides direct battery voltage (maximum 4s LiPo for the winch). Ensure adequate body clearance to prevent wires from rubbing or being cut.
Secure any excess wire length with existing clips and zip ties to prevent contact with moving parts. Plug the red male connector from the speed control into the red female connector from the winch. If using an external BEC or LED lighting, connect the ESC's red male connector to the Y-harness, then connect the Y-harness's other red male connectors to the winch and the accessory.
Operation
CAUTION: RISK OF INJURY! Moving parts can cause injury. Keep hands and objects clear during operation.
Binding the Wireless Remote to the Winch
The wireless remote needs to be bound to the winch to operate. The remote has two channels (1 or 2) for independent operation of two winches.
- Select Channel: Pull the clear tab from the remote to connect the battery. Press and release the Channel Select button; the activity LED will blink the current channel (1 or 2 blinks). Press and hold the Channel Select button for 4 seconds to alternate between channels 1 and 2.
- Binding: Press and hold the Bind button on the winch for 3 seconds until the status LED turns solid red. Press and release either the Line In or Line Out button on the wireless remote. The status LED on the winch will turn off, indicating the winch and remote are bound and ready for use.
Winch Operation
- To operate, press the Line In or Line Out button on the wireless remote to control line feed.
- Release the button to stop the winch. An automatic brake prevents unwinding under tension.
Freespool Feature
The Traxxas winch features a Freespool function to manually pull the winch line out quickly. Press and hold the freespool button (refer to Fig. 2) while pulling the line to the desired length. Always use the wireless remote to wind the line back onto the spool.
Overload Protection Mode
If the winch stops working and the status LED on the winch blinks red, it has entered overload protection mode. Allow the winch components to cool for a few minutes before resuming operation.
Custom Installations
Mounting to a Flat Surface
The winch can be mounted to a flat surface using up to four 2.5x10mm screws through the bottom of the winch. The maximum screw depth into the winch is 9.5mm. For this mounting method, remove the winch mount and install the included 2.5x12mm CS screws into the winch housing.
Installing a Fairlead (If Not Built-in)
If your front bumper does not include a built-in fairlead, thread the winch hook and washer through the included fairlead and install it onto the winch using the supplied 2.5x10mm CS screws.
Replacing the Winch Line
- Thread the winch line into the hole in the spool on the winch. Tie a knot in the end of the line to secure it to the spool. The winch line is available in different colors (part #8864 grey, #8864R red, #8864X blue, sold separately).
- Insert the other end of the line through the washer and tie it to the winch hook as shown in Fig. 5.
Installing the Winch Line Retainer
Install the included line retainer on the winch hook to help prevent the line from slipping off the hook.
Power Tap Installation
If your speed control wiring is not equipped with the 2-pin male connector (black wire with red connector), install the power tap (part #6541X, sold separately) onto the High-Current Connector to provide power to the winch.
CAUTION: RISK OF DAMAGE TO ACCESSORIES! Note the polarity and wire color on the pre-installed wires on the power tap. Ensure correct polarity during installation on the High-Current Connector: red (+) positive, black (-) negative. During installation, ensure the terminals of the High-Current Connector and the power tap make full contact.
