Model 1715 Headphone Demonstration Amplifier

Introduction

The 1715 is designed to provide high fidelity amplification for headphones in self-service retail demonstrations. Only one of the four outputs may be active at any one time. Larger switching systems, linked by Expansion Bus and audio patch cords, can allow one live position on each 1715 or one live position in the entire system (see Expansion Bus). When a demo session times out, the headphones are silent. The next demo starts at the default volume, regardless of the volume level of the previous demo. For best results, use a commercial-grade lossless audio player such as Audio Authority's Model 1703.

Diagram Description: A rectangular metal enclosure with various ports and controls on its top and front surfaces. Key labels include '12V DC POWER', 'STATUS', 'GAIN', 'PRODUCT SELECT BUTTONS', and 'HEADPHONE OUTPUTS 1-4'. The unit features input jacks for 'DEFAULT INPUT', 'CUSTOMER INPUT', and 'AUDIO BUS OUT'. Controls include a 'STATUS LED', 'POWER INPUT', 'POWER OUTPUT', 'DEMO TIMEOUT', 'GAIN' dial, 'FEATURE SWITCHES' (1-4), 'SIREN', 'EXPAND', 'LED SWITCH', and 'THEFT'. Front panel controls include 'PRODUCT SELECT BUTTONS' (1-4) and a 'CONTROL PORT'. A note indicates 'Theft detection no longer supported as of 2021'. A separate image shows an '1895 Rotary Control with black knob'.

Package Contents: 1715 headphone demonstrator, DC power adapter.

Features

Audio Sources and Customer Auto Demo

Connect an Audio Authority Model 1703 music player to the Audio Input jack as the default source. If desired, provide a 3.5mm cord connected to the Customer Input so that customers may use their own music players to demonstrate headphones. When audio is detected on the Customer Input jack, the customer device is automatically selected as the audio source. If no audio is detected on the Customer Input for 3 seconds, the 1715 switches back to the Default Input.

Audio Bus Out

The bus output feeds the currently selected audio input to more 1715 modules or other audio devices in the system. Connect a 3.5mm patch cord from the first 1715 bus output to the second 1715 default Audio Input, etc. One linked system sharing a Default Input also must share one Customer Input (do not use any Customer inputs besides the first 1715).

Product Select Button (PSB) Ports

Customers can activate one product at a time using a four-wire LED push-button switch (sold separately). Connect a button for each corresponding product. The LED in the button blinks during the demonstration.

Expansion Bus

Expansion Bus is a four-conductor cable that allows multiple 1715 modules to form one coordinated system. They can coordinate current product selection and volume control. The expanded system may allow one output per 1715 module to play (Module Mode), or one output for the entire system (System Mode). Turn on Feature Switch 1 of each 1715 to activate System Mode.

Control Port

To control volume on all outputs, connect an Audio Authority 1895 Visual Volume™ Control knob (sold separately). This control option gives visual feedback with its glow ring, its brightness indicating volume changes; a slow pulse highlights the knob during attract mode. Push to mute, and rotate knob to adjust volume. Turn on Feature Switch 2 of the primary 1715 when using one 1895 to control multiple 1715 amplifiers.

Timeout Interval

The demo timer is initiated each time a customer selects a product output to audition. The demonstration length is set by the timeout switch, in 15-second increments. If the switch is set to 0, then the automatic demonstration timeout feature is disabled. After the timeout expires, all outputs are de-selected and the volume is reset.

Power

Connect the included 12V power supply to the Power Input. Connect a jumper to other 1715 units if desired, up to four units total.

How to Set the Gain Control

Image Description: A circular dial labeled 'GAIN DIAL' with numerical indicators from 0 to 9.

Operation

On power up, the status light blinks to show normal operation. Press a product select button to demo headphones. The default volume level is a percentage of the maximum, relative to the Gain setting. When the Customer Input is being used, the Status light blinks rapidly. If the 1895 Visual Volume Control is used, its light ring pulses in attract mode and indicates volume levels during a demo.
