General Points Before You Start

This section covers essential preparations and considerations before beginning the assembly process.

Site Preparation & Base

Ground Anchors: Rhinos feature integral aluminium bases with sturdy ground anchors designed to be concreted into the ground. For soil sites, ensure the ground is compacted and avoid freshly dug soil. If siting on a lawn, clear an area at least 300mm (1ft) wider than the greenhouse. For hardstanding bases (concrete, slabs), ensure the base is level. The integral base has a wide lip for secure fixing.

Base Types:

  • Soil Bases: Use ground anchors concreted into the soil. Concreting is done after glazing.
  • Hardstanding Bases: Suitable for concrete pads or slabs. Ensure the base is level, using packing if necessary. In windy locations, a concreted perimeter of slabs is recommended for security.
  • Brick Plinth Bases: Requires adherence to specific base plans for correct installation and anchoring.
  • Brickweave Paving: Refer to paving slab instructions.

Key Considerations:

  • Level Site: The greenhouse base must be perfectly level. Use packing if the ground is uneven.
  • Flooding: Prevent water from pooling under the base by sealing or draining.
  • Proximity: Leave adequate space around the greenhouse for construction and maintenance.
  • Construction Order: Follow the specified order of assembly; the integral base is not the first component to be positioned.
  • Part Identification: Lay out parts methodically, grouping identical sections. Most parts have stickers with part numbers.

Tools Required:

  • Someone to assist
  • Sturdy stepladder
  • 10mm spanner
  • 10mm nut driver
  • 13mm spanner
  • Hacksaw (small recommended)
  • Tape measure
  • Skeleton gun for silicone
  • Spirit level
  • Drill (with HSS bits 4.5mm/3/16" & 7mm/9/32", Masonry 6mm/15/64")
  • Common tools
  • Readymix bags (for soil anchors)

Optional Tools: Glass sucker, rubber mallet, glazing paddle (available from Greenhouses Direct).

Safety Precautions:

  • Extrusion edges can be sharp; consider wearing thin gloves.
  • Wear protective eye goggles when handling glass.
  • Glass is toughened but vulnerable on edges; handle with care to avoid breakage.
  • Take care when working on stepladders, especially on soft ground.
  • Verify your spirit level is accurate before starting.

Construction Method: Aluminium bolts and nuts are used to prevent rust. Lubricate M6 nuts and bolts with WD40 or equivalent before use. Bolts slide into channels and are held captive. Leave nuts reasonably loose in early stages for adjustments, especially where parts connect through multiple holes.

Weather Considerations: Unfinished frames need anchoring against strong winds. Protect the greenhouse if leaving it overnight or for extended periods without full glazing.

Powdercoat Finish: The optional finish is durable but may have slight variations in density on intricate profiles.

Assembly Steps

Follow these steps carefully for successful assembly.

Constructing the Sides

You will need: Base side (R72/*), Eave (R08/*), Glazing bar (R05/2*), Side/roof stay (R33/1), Anchor (R93/54*), M6x11 bolt (R90/19), M6 nut (R90/20).

Method: Assemble the frame with the outside face downwards. Lubricate all M6 nuts and bolts with WD40. Slide extra bolts into glazing bar channels for future fittings (eaves braces, louvres). Fit ground anchors to side bases. If a partition is ordered, fit partition side corners now and slide bolts into side base channels.

Check: Ensure glazing bars are tight against eaves and base. Tighten all nuts except stays. Ensure extra bolts are fitted. Lubricate fixings.

Constructing the Rear

You will need: Base rear (R72/10), Top stay rear (R32/41), End stay (R33/2), Corner side (R07/1 LH, R07/2 RH), Corner roof (R07/13 LH, R07/14 RH), Heavy duty glazing bars (R05/1, R05/3), Base corner anchors (R93/55), Ground anchor (R93/54), Eave plate (R91/3), Ridge plate (R91/4), M6x11 bolt (R90/19), M6 nut (R90/20).

Method: Lay out parts as shown on page 9. Bolt together, leaving eave and ridge plates loose. Ensure corner side profiles are square and corner roof profiles are mitred at the ridge end. Bolts are always on the outside, nuts on the inside. Slide extra bolts into glazing bars for louvres or staging.

Final Check: Fit 6 nuts and bolts in the ridge and eaves channels, tighten them to hold in place. Ensure all nuts are fitted to the inside of the frame.

Constructing the Front

You will need: Base Flush Door ends (R72/23, R72/24), Flush Door Guide (R74/5), Corner sides/roofs (R07/*, R07/*), Door post (R71/1), Glazing bars (R79/4, R79/3), Door track mount (R17/4), Top stay front (R32/43), Base corner anchors (R93/55), End stay (R33/2), Ground anchor (R93/54), Ramp (R75/3), Wool pile (R92/57), Guide rail filler strip (R92/64), Z Brackets (R93/56), Eave plate (R91/3), Ridge plate (R91/4), Guide rail end cap (R93/53), M6x11 bolt (R90/19), M6 nut (R90/20), M6 flat nut (R90/46).

Method: Lay out parts as shown. Connect corner sides, end stays, and base brackets to the base. Fit ground anchors. Connect eave plates, top stays, and end stays, leaving plate fixings finger tight. Slide M6 flat nuts and bolts into door posts for later use. Fit door track mount to glazing bar and door post, tighten nuts. Connect ridge plate to roof corners, leaving loose.

Check: Ensure nuts are loose at eave/ridge plates but tightened elsewhere. Fit 6 nuts and bolts at ridge/eaves. Fit ground anchors. Fit extra bolts for staging if applicable. Slide M6 flat nuts into door posts.

Joining the Four Sides

Method: Hold the rear end upright. Lift the side into position and slide the eave section through the gap in the rear frame. Align the slots in the eave section with the bolt channels in the rear corner frame. Loosen 2 nuts/bolts and slide them into the slots to secure. Bolt base corner anchors to join end and side frames, tighten them. Repeat for the second side and then connect the door end.

Check: Ensure nuts are loose at eave plates. Eave section connected at all 4 corners. Base sides bolted tightly.

Fitting the Ridge & Roof Bars

You will need: Ridge (R04/3 to 8*), Heavy glazing bar (R05/10*), M6x11 bolt (R90/19), M6 nut (R90/20).

Method: Fit nuts and bolts loosely to the ridge, except for roof stays. Position a stepladder inside. Fit the ridge to front/rear sections by pushing through corner roof sections and securing with loosened nuts/bolts. Begin fitting roof glazing bars from the centre, pushing them tight against the ridge. Slide extra bolts into glazing bars as indicated for braces/rails/crossbars. Ensure glazing bars are tight against eaves before bolting. Repeat for the other side.

Check: Ensure nuts are loose at eave plates and diagonal braces. Fit vent crossbars and hanging basket rails.

Completing the Roof

You will need: Vent crossbar (R32/7*), Hanging basket rail (R34/22 to 27*), Eave brace (R34/20*), Ridge brace (R34/21*), Roof stay (R33/4), Roof tie rod (R91/7), Roof tie rod brackets (R91/6), M8 nuts (R90/15), M8 washers (R90/16).

Method: Fit ridge braces from the middle outwards, checking for levelness. Fit eave braces above and below the eave section. Fit 4 flat stay bars diagonally to the roof. Fit vent crossbars using a temporary glass pane for positioning. Fit hanging basket rail brackets and rails. Fit tie rods to pull eaves in if needed.

Partition Note: If a partition is fitted, Eave brace (R34/20) and Ridge brace (R34/21) may be removed.

Check: Ensure nuts are loose at eave plates and diagonal braces. All vent crossbars and hanging basket rails are fitted and tightened.

Fitting the Downpipe Brackets

You will need: Gutter fixing pack.

Method: Fit M4 nut into the bracket, push bolt through the corner bar and secure. Ensure the bolt head is tight against the corner bar. Offer clip to corner bar, mark hole, drill, and secure. Do not fit downpipes yet, only the brackets.

Useful Tips: For 2-into-1 kits or uncertain water butt heights, leave the final 6" of glazing bead out of the rear corner post until the clip is positioned.

Check: Ensure downpipe brackets are fitted now, as it is difficult once glazed.

Important Checks and Adjustments

Integral Staging: If ordered, refer to separate instructions. Ensure extra bolts are fitted in corner sections if staging is desired later.

Ground Settlement: For soil sites, consider supporting corners with bricks/blocks/slabs to prevent future damage. Ignore if on hardstanding.

Anchoring: If fitting on soil or digging holes, refer to page 3. Dig holes and fit "J" bolts, leaving them dangling for later concreting. Do not concrete bolts into position yet.

Leveling & Squaring: Check the greenhouse is level and square by measuring diagonals. Adjust by pushing corners if needed (this is why corner plates were left finger tight). Tighten corner and ridge plates once square and level, but not braces.

Check: Ensure all nuts (except stays) are tightened. Check preparations for anchoring and subsidence. Check fixings for future staging. Ensure greenhouse is square and level.

Constructing the Roof Vents

You will need: Vent Side (R23/2), Large vent glazing bar (R79/7), Vent Hinges (R24/1*, R24/2*), Vent Cills (R21/1*, R21/4*), M3 Nyloc insert SS (R90/38*), M3 x 8mm screw (R90/22*).

Method: Fit nuts and bolts loosely to vent hinge and cill. Slide vent side onto the bolt on the vent cill. For double vents, use a centre glazing bar. Construct the vent on a flat surface. Fit small bolts from underside through hinge/cill into glazing bar, securing with small nuts. Complete remaining frames and move to glazing.

Important: Note the orientation of the nut channel on the vent side; do not force it beyond the dotted line.

Check: Avoid the mistake described in point two.

Glazing the Windows

You will need: Glazing rubber (R92/12), Glass panes B (605 x 972mm), Glazing beads (R92/45).

Method: Fit glazing rubber to fins. Cut glazing beads to window side lengths. Lay first piece of glass into frame, ensuring it's the correct way round. Slide glass up into the recess in the vent hinge. Push bead back, tucking the soft black fin under the lip. The back leg of the bead tucks behind the glass. Use a glazing paddle and mallet if needed to snap beads home. Apply warm soapy water if beads are stiff. Slide glass down to the vent cill, ensuring it sits flush. Repeat for all vents.

Check: Ensure glass is square and centralised. Beads are fully snapped in.

Assemble and Glaze the Doors

You will need: Flush door stile (R83/1), Flush door meeting stile (R85/1), Door cross-members (R15/1, R86/1), Door transom (R16/1), Wool pile (R92/57), Rubber (R92/12), Glazing beads (R92/9), Door knobs, Door wheels, M8 bolts, M8 nuts, M8 Nyloc nuts, Glass panes E (605x610), Glass panes K (605x512).

Method: Lay out parts. Fit glazing rubber. Fit door wheels to cross-member tops using M8 bolts, ensuring they spin freely. Bolt top door section to stiles. Fit transoms loosely. Push glass pane E (605x610) into the "U" groove on the top door section, slide transom up to the glass. Fit remaining glass panes and transoms. Fit bottom door cross-member. Finish doors by fitting glazing beads, ensuring glass is square and centralised. Cut beads on the side with the door stop to accommodate the door stop. Drill holes for door knobs and screw handles together.

Check: Ensure rubber is fitted. Door wheels turn freely.

Finishing the Doors

Method: Fit glazing beads, ensuring glass is square and centralised. Cut beads on the side with the door stop to accommodate the door stop. Fit door knobs by drilling holes and screwing handles together.

Check: Door wheel is free to spin.

Prepare for Glazing

Method: Fit M6x22 bolts to front roof corners. Fit glazing rubber to remaining frame profiles (except horizontal ones where rubber is not required). Fit louvre frames: attach end caps, then fit louvre sides onto glass pane T (605x192mm), ensuring the handle side is on the right. Secure with cut glazing beads. Use longer beads for rear louvres. Fit louvre glass seals (R92/46) to panes.

Check: M6x22 bolts fitted. Glazing rubber fitted to corners, glazing bars, and door posts. Glass pane T and louvre frames fitted. Louvre end caps fitted.

Partition? Then.... Glazing!

Recommendation: Glaze the partition before the main greenhouse.

Method: Glaze the 4 corners of sides and roof first to check squareness. Tighten remaining loose nuts on side and roof stays. Slide glass up under the eave recess, let it down gently onto the base, ensuring sides are against glazing bars. Clip glazing beads in from the bottom (roof) and top (sides). Roof beads may need cutting. Ensure beads are fully snapped in. Glaze front and rear panes C similarly, noting differences in beads. Glaze the roof: use "H" section plastic strip to join roof glass, sealing with silicone. Place pane G, secure with "W" clips temporarily. Place pane B, ensuring a good seal. Use glazing beads for the roof. Cut beads for the door posts. Cut beads for the next end bay using pane F and corner pane S. Fit "H" section joining strips. Continue glazing the rear and front bays.

Check: Ensure bottom edge of glass sits on horizontal profile. Ensure sides are parallel to glazing bars and centralised. Check beads are fully snapped in. Ensure roof glass is joined with "H" section and sealed.

Finish Glazing

Method: Clip beads into place for roof vents, starting level with the glazing bar end. Apply silicone between ridge and top of glass if desired. If glass is slightly off-centre, apply silicone to the inside of the glazing bead at the eave end to prevent slipping. Fit pane G below the roof vent, adjusting the vent crossbar if necessary. Use saved off-cut glazing bead for pane G. Apply silicone between glass and vent crossbar. Slide roof vents into position from the end of the greenhouse. Fit roof vent stops (R92/55) to prevent vents from moving in the ridge. Secure vent stops with screws.

Attention: Roof vents are heavy; use two people and stepladders. Ensure stepladders are firm and level. Wear eye protection. Eliminate trip hazards. Practice lifting vents.

Check: Roof vents do not foul vent crossbars. Ensure vent cross-member is sealed. Roof vent stops are fitted.

Final Jobs

Fit Door Track: Fit door track (R18/3) to the track mount. Slide bolts into the channel and offer up to the track mount. Tighten nuts by hand. Fit door track supports (R31/4) to the track for correct positioning, then tighten nuts.

Fit Sliding Doors: If downpipes are fitted to the door end, remove one downpipe bracket to allow doors to slide on. Fit doors onto the track, ensuring the door with the odd meeting stile is the left-hand door. Refit the downpipe bracket and clip in the loose glazing bead.

Fit Door Stop Brackets: Use M6 flat nuts previously slid into door posts to connect door stop brackets (R94/28) to door posts. Position bracket level with the lower door transom and tighten.

Fit the Autovents: Two autovents for double vents, one for single. Fit cylinder to assembly, lubricating the thread with oil. Use clamps to fit autovents to vent cill and crossbar, securing through the slot.

Fit the Window Locks: Before locking, disconnect autovents by removing the pin and cylinder. Fit locks to glazing bars adjacent to vents. Ensure autovents are connected when locks are unlocked; otherwise, they may suffer damage.

Fix the Greenhouse Down: Refer to pages 2 & 3 for ground anchor instructions. Concrete "J" bolts or secure anchor bolts to concrete pads.

Fitting the Louvre Glass: Slide louvre panes into carriers from the top. Fit louvre glass seals (R92/46) to panes.

Fit the Downpipes: Push end cap into place, seal with silicone. Fit outlet and elbow joints, sealing with silicone.

Finishing Touches: Fit roof blinds (refer to separate instructions/video 28). Fit finial (refer to separate instructions).
