General Points Before You Start
This document provides assembly instructions for Rhino Premium greenhouses. Please read all sections carefully before beginning.
You Will Need:
- Someone to assist you
- Sturdy stepladder
- 10mm spanner
- 10mm nut driver
- 13mm spanner
- Hacksaw (preferably small)
- Tape measure
- Skeleton gun for silicone
- Spirit level
- Drill (drill bits HSS 4.5mm/3/16" & 7mm/9/32"; Masonry 6mm/15/64")
- Common tools
- Bags of readymix for anchors (if erecting on soil)
Useful but not essential tools:
- Glass sucker (for handling glass panes)
- Rubber mallet
- Glazing paddle
These specialist tools are available from Greenhouses Direct.
Thoughts & Considerations:
- Site Selection: Choose a level site. Rhinos can be sited on soil or hardstanding. Ensure the base is square and level.
- Soil Bases: Use compacted soil. Clear an area at least 300mm larger than the greenhouse footprint.
- Hardstanding Bases: Ensure the base is level. Packing may be required.
- Brick Plinth Bases: Follow specific base plans.
- Flood Risk: Consider drainage to prevent water accumulation.
- Fixing Down: Refer to anchor system details.
- Proximity: Allow adequate space around the greenhouse for construction and maintenance.
- Construction Order: Follow the steps sequentially. Do not fix the integral base first.
- Part Identification: Lay out parts and identify them using stickers.
Important Safety Notes:
- Edges of extrusions can be sharp; consider wearing thin gloves.
- Wear protective eye goggles during glazing.
- Handle glass with care; toughened glass is vulnerable to edge knocks.
- Use stepladders safely, especially on soft ground.
- Ensure your spirit level is accurate.
Construction Method:
- Use aluminium bolts and nuts which will not rust. Do not overtighten.
- Lubricate all fixings with WD40 or equivalent before use.
- Leave nuts loose in early stages for easier alignment.
Base Footprint and Preparation
Base Footprint:
The footprint is the contact point between the base and the ground. Ensure 32.00mm is added to the overall base length for the door ramp.
Soil Bases:
Support internal and external ramps after completion. Laying a path can help prevent the ramp from fouling the door.
Hardstanding:
Common hardstand bases include perimeter bases of slabs or concrete. Ensure adequate allowance for fixing down through anchors. Consider a concrete strip foundation wide enough to prevent cracking.
Fitting onto Brickwork:
Adhere to the brick perimeter footprint on page 4. Use solid engineering bricks (102mm wide).
Fitting onto Paving Slabs:
If slabs are laid directly on sand, the greenhouse's weight alone may not be sufficient to prevent sideways movement in high winds.
Base Dimensions:
Nominal Description | 12' | 14' | 16' | 18' | 20' |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Exact Length mm (A) | 3777 | 4395 | 5013 | 5631 | 6249 |
Exact Partition mm (B) | 1897 | 2515 | 3133 | - | - |
Note: Partition dimensions are only required if a partition is ordered.
Greenhouses Direct RECOMMEND solid and flat engineering bricks for a good anchor point.
Constructing the Frame
Construct the Sides:
- Lubricate M6 nuts and bolts with WD40.
- Lay parts with the outside face down.
- Bolt together, leaving nuts loose on stays (R33/1).
- Slide extra bolts into glazing bar channels for eave braces and louvres.
- Fit ground anchors.
- If a partition is ordered, fit partition side corners and slide bolts into side base channels.
Construct the Rear:
- Ensure corner sections are oriented correctly.
- Lay parts out as shown, leaving bolts loose on eave and ridge plates.
- Slide extra bolts into glazing bars for louvres or integral staging if applicable.
- Fit 6 nuts and bolts to ridge and eaves, tighten to secure.
Construct the Front:
- Lay out parts as shown for the rear build.
- Fit door track and supports.
- Fit door stop brackets.
- Slide doors onto the track.
Fit the Ridge & Roof Bars:
- Fit nuts and bolts loosely to the ridge and roof bars.
- Slide the ridge bar through corner roof sections.
- Fit roof glazing bars, starting from the centre.
- Slide extra bolts into glazing bars as indicated for vents and bracing.
- Fit flat stay bars diagonally.
- Fit hanging basket rail brackets and rails.
- Fit roof tie rods and brackets.
Glazing
Glaze the Windows:
- Fit glazing rubber to glazing fins.
- Cut glazing beads to size.
- Lay the first piece of glass into the frame, ensuring it is correctly oriented.
- Use glazing beads to secure the glass, working from bottom to top for roof and top to bottom for sides.
- Use a glazing paddle and rubber mallet for a snug fit if needed.
Prepare for Glazing:
- Fit M6x22 bolts to front roof corners.
- Fit glazing rubber to frame sections.
- Fit louvre frames and glass panes (T).
- Attach louvre end caps.
Partition Glazing:
- Glaze the partition before the main greenhouse.
- Fit glazing beads and clips as per window instructions.
- Ensure the greenhouse is square before tightening remaining nuts.
- Check diagonals and adjust if necessary.
Glazing the Roof:
- Fit roof vent stops (R92/55).
- Fit autovents by using clamps. Lubricate threads with oil.
- Fit window locks to prevent vents lifting in wind. Disconnect autovents before locking.
Glaze the Shaped Panes:
- Fit H-section glass joining strips.
- Use W glazing clips temporarily.
- Cut beads to size for door posts.
Finishing Touches
Fit the Downpipe Brackets:
- Fit brackets to corner posts.
- Do not fit downpipes yet.
Fit the Downpipes:
- Push end cap into gutter and seal with silicone.
- Attach outlet and screw into gutter.
- Apply silicone to elbow joints.
- For optional 'two into one' kits, drill a hole in the centre glazing bar to attach the pipe with a cable tie.
Fit the Louvre Glass Seals:
- Attach louvre glass seal strips (R92/46) to panes as indicated.
Finial:
Refer to separate finial instructions.
Blinds:
Refer to separate blind instructions.
