- B - Adaptor (2)
- C - Screen (1)
(Diagram Description: A visual representation shows the main pump unit with a power cord attached. Two threaded adapters and a screen are shown separately.)
Installation
Pumping from Ponds, Streams, and Lakes
- Place the pump as close as possible (vertically) to the water source to maintain the shortest possible suction lift.
- Set the pump on a level and firm base.
- Protect the unit against flooding and excess moisture. Ensure the weight of the pipe is supported.
- Make sure the water is clear of debris (e.g., scale, dirt, sand) that could clog the pump. Ensure the suction strainer or foot valve and pipe are in good condition; leaks can prevent priming and cause pump failure or overheating.
- Use the least amount of fittings and the shortest piping possible, as extended runs and many fittings can cause friction and reduce water flow.
Piping
The figure shows a typical installation. Threaded adapters for connecting a garden hose are included. For the suction line, use only reinforced hose to prevent collapse during operation. Rigid pipe is recommended for the suction line. The pump should not be more than 15 ft. above or away from the inlet source. Install a foot valve if the suction lift or line is over 10 ft. A suction strainer (supplied) is recommended to avoid clogging, especially in applications where foreign objects may be drawn into the pump (e.g., creek, pond, lake).
A standard garden hose can be used as the discharge line.
NOTE: Small leaks in the suction line will greatly reduce pump performance and efficiency and may prevent the pump from priming.
NOTE: Ordinary garden hoses may collapse under suction pressure and should only be used as the inlet line in pressure boosting applications.
(Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates the pump's inlet and outlet ports. It shows a priming plug at the top, an inlet port, an outlet port, and threaded garden hose adapters connected to the outlet. An arrow indicates the direction of water flow into the inlet and out of the outlet.)
Operation
WARNING: Hazardous voltage. Risk of electric shock, personal injury, or death. Unplug the pump before attempting service. Never touch or handle a pump or pump motor with wet hands or when standing on a wet or damp surface, or in water.
WARNING: Explosion hazard. Never run the pump with the outlet blocked or turned off. If water is trapped inside the pump during use, it could create steam, leading to an explosion and burns.
- The pump volute must be filled with water prior to operation. Remove the priming plug and fill the pump volute with water. Replace and tighten the plug.
- Inspect hoses and pipes thoroughly before each use. Ensure all connections are tight and the hoses and pipes are in good condition. An air leak in the suction line will prevent priming and reduce effective pump operation.
- If using an extension cord, use only a UL-approved indoor/outdoor, 3-wire grounding-type power cord. Never allow any part of the cord or receptacle ends to sit in water or damp areas.
- Plug the power cord into a 115V AC single-phase GFCI grounded outlet. The pump will begin operating immediately and should prime within a few minutes. When using in pressure boosting applications, turn on supply water prior to starting the pump. Supply water will force the pump to prime.
Automatic Thermal Protection
CAUTION: Do not cycle or continue to run the pump following an overload condition. Thermal overloads are designed to protect the product and user during an extreme condition where normal operating parameters are exceeded. Determine the cause of an overload condition immediately after detection and resolve prior to operating the pump again.
The motor is supplied with an automatic reset thermal protector. If the temperature in the motor rises too quickly, the switch will automatically shut off all power before the motor can be damaged. When the motor has cooled sufficiently, the switch will automatically reset the unit and restart the motor.
NOTE: If the protector trips repeatedly, the pump should be inspected to determine the issue. A clogged impeller, low voltage, or long extension cords, etc., could cause the unit to cycle. See the Troubleshooting section for more information.
Priming the Pump
Make sure all suction line connections are airtight.
Remove the priming plug and fill the pump volute with water. Replace and tighten the plug. If the plug sealant is damaged during removal, apply three wraps of PTFE tape or equivalent thread sealant to the plug prior to reinsertion to ensure a sufficient seal.
NOTE: Never operate the pump dry. Using the unit without water can damage the impeller and may damage the seal, causing the pump to leak or flood, and void the warranty.
Maintenance
Regularly inspect the pump and system components. Check for weak or worn hoses and/or loose or leaking fittings. Check the power cord for damage.
Care and Cleaning
To clean a pump with clogged debris:
- Unplug the pump from electrical power.
- Unscrew the four screws (4) and washers (3) and remove the volute (1).
- Remove debris from around the impeller (2).
- Reassemble the pump.
(Diagram Description: An exploded view shows the pump's volute (1) attached by four screws (4) with washers (3) to the motor housing. The impeller (2) is visible within the volute.)
