Maintenance
Stone countertops are resilient to stains and scratches. As a preventative measure, wipe up spills promptly. Do not let liquid sit on the stone overnight. Stones are most prone to staining by oil and acid; blot these spills immediately. Clean with a mild non-abrasive soap and warm water.
In bathrooms, stone can attract soap scum. Rinse the vanity top with clean, hot water frequently.
Reapply sealer periodically. The frequency depends on the sealer quality and usage. A penetrating non-toxic sealer is recommended for bath areas.
For stains and scratches:
- Oil-based stains: Use acetone, mineral spirits, or ammonia.
- Organic stains (coffee, tea, juice): Use hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia.
- Water spots/rings: Caused by minerals left by evaporated water. Buff gently with 00 gauge steel wool.
- Small nicks/scratches: Can often be removed similarly to water spots.
- Larger scratches, chips, resilient stains: May require professional help. Contact a local stonemason.
Care and Cleaning
Clean liquid spills promptly, especially those with high-acid content which can etch marble. Promptly clean products like shaving cream, toothpaste, perfume, cologne, nail polish remover, hair coloring/perm products, shampoo, drain opener, and toilet bowl cleaner.
Place protective pads under heavy objects (pottery, appliances) to prevent scratching the marble surface.
Avoid abrasive cleaners or rough cleaning pads. A soft buffing pad may be used if necessary.
Use coasters under drinking glasses to prevent glass rings.
Do not stand on the marble top to fix overhead lights or for other purposes. Do not place extremely heavy items on the top.
