Description
The TSP-40 is a thermal strip printer designed for use with the Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL system. It mounts within the MXL enclosure, with its printout visible through a window in the locked enclosure door. Printouts are automatically spooled onto a take-up reel for convenient record storage.
The TSP-40 functions as an event logging device, providing a permanent history report of all MXL system activity. It can also generate system status reports, including lists of smoke detector sensitivities and thresholds, device analog voltages, device types, and custom messages.
The TSP-40 operates from the MXL's main power and continues to function if the MXL transfers to standby batteries. This battery-backed operation ensures uninterrupted event logging during AC power loss, eliminating the need for a separate UPS.
The TSP-40 utilizes thermal printer paper and supports both normal and compressed character modes. System events like Alarms and Troubles are indented and printed in uppercase for clear identification. System reports are printed in compressed (80 character) mode. All events and reports include the time and date. The MMB also performs a daily printer test at midnight.
Engineer and Architect Specifications
Permanent history logging of all system events shall be provided by the TSP-40 thermal strip printer. The printer shall be mounted in a locked enclosure, with its printout visible through an opening in the enclosure door. All printouts shall be automatically spooled onto a take-up reel.
The printer shall operate from a 24 VDC supply and shall continue to operate from the system standby batteries during main power loss. No UPS system shall be required for backup power.
The TSP-40 shall record all system events, including operator commands, and shall be capable of providing printed lists of system conditions such as detector sensitivities, thresholds, analog voltages, device types, and custom messages. A trouble condition shall be generated when printer paper runs out. An internal buffer shall store events when paper is out.

Typical Wiring
Diagram showing typical wiring connections for the TSP-40 printer to the MMB-1 control unit, including a 6-conductor data cable and a 2-conductor power cable. It details connections to P4 on the MMB-1 for data, and either P3 on the MMB-1 or P8 on a MOM-4 for power, depending on system configuration.
Electrical Installation
The TSP-40 comes with two attached cables: a two-conductor power cable and a six-conductor data cable. To complete the electrical installation:
- Connect the six-conductor data cable to P4 on the MMB-1.
- If no MOM-4 is installed, connect the two-conductor power cable to P3 on the MMB-1.
- If a MOM-4 is installed, connect the two-conductor power cable to P8 on the MOM-4.
