Service Hints
CD Mechanism Handling
When removing the CD mechanism, attach a paper clip to the flexprint contacts 1 (see Disassembly Instructions) to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging the laser diode.
Playback with Removed Cabinet Top
With the cabinet top removed, switch 1430 must be shorted to enable operation. Caution: Observe Laser Safety Instructions (see 'Safety' Service Manual) when operating with the cabinet open.
Disassembly Instructions
1. Removing the CD-Door (Fig. 1): Undo screw 1. Push spindles 2 outwards. Lift the CD-Door (3).
2. Removing the Cabinet (Fig. 2): Undo 7 screws 1 (6 from bottom, 1 in battery compartment). Open CD-Door. Lift the cabinet (2).
3. Removing the Front panel (Fig. 2): Release the 5 snaps (3) of the front panel. Lift the front panel (4).
4. Removing the Eject button and Eject lever ('OPEN') (Fig. 3): Remove the front panel (step 3). Release snaps of eject button and lift it. Release snaps of eject lever and lift it.
5. Reassembling the Eject button and Eject lever ('OPEN') (Fig. 3): Snap in the eject lever (1). Place the eject spring with its long leg into the cabinet hole (3). Place the eject button onto the spring, aligning the short leg with the button's slot (2). Turn the button 90° clockwise to secure.
6. Laying of the Flexprint Cables (Fig. 4): Flex cable 1 must be wound up twice to prevent damage. Ensure conductive tracks of flex cable 1 face the CD-Drive, and flex cable 2 faces the display.
7. Repair Position (Fig. 5): To access the PCB's solder side for troubleshooting, use a wrench to position the unit. Remove the cabinet (step 2). Take out the PCB and CD drive from the bottom. Remove damper springs. Fix the CD drive to the board with a rubber band. Secure the unit in the wrench using insulated pads to prevent short-circuits.
Operating Hints
Controls
- DISPLAY: Shows playing modes, tracks, and times.
- OPEN: Opens the CD player lid.
- VOLUME: Adjusts headphone volume.
- PLAY/PAUSE: Starts or pauses CD playback.
- STOP: Stops CD playback, clears settings, and switches off the player.
- DSC (Digital Sound Control): Selects sound settings (CAR, JAZZ, ROCK, off).
- PREV: Selects previous track or searches backwards if held.
- NEXT: Selects next track or searches forwards if held.
- MODE: Selects playing modes (SHUFFLE, SHUFFLE REPEAT, REPEAT).

- ASS (Anti Shock System): Activates electronic buffer memory for uninterrupted playback.
- RESUME/HOLD: Activates RESUME (resumes playback) or HOLD (locks all buttons).
- REMOTE: Headphone and remote control jack (3.5mm stereo).
- 6V DC: Jack for external power supply.
- CD OUT: Jack for connection to a HiFi stereo system.
Power Supply
- Mains Adapter: Ensure local voltage matches adapter voltage. Connect adapter to player and wall outlet. Disconnect when not in use.
- Batteries (Type R6, UM3, AA): Insert four rechargeable NiCd or alkaline batteries. Average playtime: Alkali batteries: 8 hours; NiCd batteries: 3 hours. Remove batteries if empty or not in use for a long time. Low battery is indicated by a flashing 'full' symbol (alkali) or a flashing 'empty' symbol with 'bAtt' message (alkali/NiCd).
Cautions
- CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT: Inherently safe design, maximum permissible radiation values are never exceeded.
- CAUTION: Using unauthorized equipment or tampering may lead to dangerous radiation exposure.
- Headphones: Do not play at high volume to remain aware of surroundings (e.g., traffic noise).
- Environmental Protection: Dispose of used batteries responsibly at designated collection points.
Operation
Playing a CD
- Press OPEN to open the lid.
- Insert CD with label side up.
- Gently push the CD center to seat it on the hub.
- Close the lid by pushing its left side. Display shows total tracks/time.
- Press PLAY/PAUSE to start playback. Display shows current track/time.
Adjusting Volume and Sound
Use the VOLUME control for headphone volume. Press DSC repeatedly to select sound settings (CAR, JAZZ, ROCK, off).
Interrupting CD Play
Press PLAY/PAUSE to interrupt. Press again to continue. Display shows flashing time.
Stopping CD Play
Press STOP to stop playback. Display shows total tracks/time. Press STOP again to switch off the set. The unit switches off automatically after 10 seconds of inactivity.
Removing the CD
Hold the CD by its edge and gently press the center of the platter.
Selecting Another Track
Briefly press PREV or NEXT to skip to the beginning of the current/previous or next track. Display shows track number. Playback resumes automatically with the selected track. In stop mode, press PLAY/PAUSE to start.
Searching for a Passage
Hold PREV or NEXT during playback to search forwards or backwards. Playback continues at low volume, speeding up after 2 seconds. Release the button at the desired point. Searching is limited to the current track during SHUFFLE or program playback.
MODE - Different Playing Modes
Press MODE to cycle through SHUFFLE (random order, play once), SHUFFLE REPEAT (random order, repeat), and REPEAT (repeat CD). During playback, the selected mode flashes for 2 seconds before activating. In stop mode, the selected mode is displayed; press PLAY/PAUSE to start. Deactivate all modes by pressing MODE repeatedly.
PROG - Programming Tracks (max. 20)
- Select desired track using PREV or NEXT.
- Press PROG to store the track. Display shows track number/program status (e.g., P06).
Notes: 'FULL' indicates more than 20 tracks attempted. 'SELECT' appears if PROG is pressed without a track selected.
Playing the Program
If tracks were saved in STOP mode, press PLAY/PAUSE. If saved during playback, press STOP then PLAY/PAUSE. Display shows 'PROGRAM'. Playback uses the selected mode (e.g., shuffle).
Checking Settings
Press PROG for over 2 seconds to cycle through stored tracks.
Erasing the Program
Press STOP in STOP mode to erase the program. 'PROGRAM' disappears. Power interruption or opening the lid also erases the program.
ASS - Anti Shock System
Slide the ASS switch to the right to activate. The ASS memory stores 3 seconds of CD data in advance to prevent interruptions from shock and vibration. The ASS symbol fills in the display. Switching ASS on/off may cause a brief delay or interruption.
RESUME / HOLD
- RESUME: Slide RESUME/HOLD switch to the middle. Display shows 'RESUME'. If playback is stopped with STOP, the last position is stored. Press PLAY/PAUSE to resume from that position. Do not open the lid, as this loses the stored information.
- HOLD: Slide RESUME/HOLD switch to the right to deactivate all buttons. The lid cannot be opened. 'HOLD' appears on the display when a button is pressed (except OPEN). The RESUME function is automatically active in HOLD position.
Maintenance
Never touch the CD player's lens. Protect the player, batteries, and CDs from rain, dampness, sand, dust, and excessive heat (e.g., from heaters or direct sunlight in a parked car). Lens may fog up in sudden temperature changes; allow the player to acclimatize. Clean CDs by wiping from the center to the edge with a soft, lint-free cloth; avoid cleaning agents. Handle CDs by the edge and return them to their packaging. Clean the player with a slightly damp chamois leather; avoid cleaning agents that may corrode the housing. Address minor burrs around the CD center hole with a pencil tip if a new CD doesn't sit flat.
Troubleshooting
General Advice
Check the following points before seeking repair. Do not attempt self-repair, as it voids the warranty.
Problem: No Power / No CD Play Start / No Display
- Batteries: Incorrectly inserted (insert correctly), new batteries (press PLAY/PAUSE), empty (change/recharge), dirty contacts (clean with cloth).
- AC Power Adapter: Loose connection (connect securely).
Problem: Playback Does Not Start from First Track
- RESUME, SHUFFLE, or PROGRAM function is activated (switch them off).
Problem: CD Lid Does Not Open
- HOLD feature is activated (switch it off).
Problem: No Volume and DSC Function
- Volume and DSC only work at the REMOTE jack (connect headphones to REMOTE jack).
Problem: CD Play Does Not Start or Interrupts / Display Errors (ERROR, NO DISC)
- CD lid not securely closed (close securely).
- HOLD feature activated (switch off).
- Moisture condensation on lens (leave player in warm environment).
- CD not inserted correctly or label facing up (insert correctly).
- CD badly scratched (use another CD).
- CD is dirty (clean the CD).
Problem: No Sound / Bad Sound Quality
- PAUSE is activated (press PLAY/PAUSE).
- Loose or wrong connections (check connections).
- Volume is too low (adjust volume).
- Headphones worn incorrectly (check L/R indications).
- Headphone plug is dirty (clean plug).
- Strong magnetic fields nearby (change player position or connections).
- Electrostatic discharge from user (press PREV/NEXT once or PLAY/PAUSE twice).
Problem: Malfunctions with Remote Control Operation
- Remote control not firmly connected to REMOTE socket (check connections).
Service Test Program
To enter the service test program, hold PLAY and STOP while turning the unit ON. The display shows the microprocessor version (e.g., '88S'). The program enters a main menu for accessing various tests.
2. Display Test
Purpose: Check display driver and segments. Press NEXT to start. Displays test patterns 1, 2, and 3. Press PLAY to advance to the next pattern. Press STOP to exit.
3. Remote Control Test
Purpose: Check remote control display and keys. Press MODE to start. The display shows 'rC'. Press remote keys and check corresponding command codes on the CD player's display and test patterns on the remote. Refer to Table 1 for codes and patterns. Press STOP to exit.
4. Playback Test with Error Analysis
Purpose: Analyze playback errors. Press DSC to start. The unit reads TOC and enters standby. Press PLAY to start error analysis. Display shows track and time during normal playback. Errors are indicated by codes (see Table 2). Errors are classified as 'light' (short interruption) or 'severe' (stops playback). Severe errors are displayed while connected; light errors until a new error or button press. Disconnect power to stop the test.
5. Servo Test
Purpose: Check sled movement and disc motor acceleration. Press PLAY to enter. Display shows '1'. NEXT moves sled outwards, PREV moves inwards. MODE accelerates disc motor clockwise, DSC counter-clockwise. Press PLAY to enter Focus Test; press STOP to return to the main menu.
5.1 Focus Test
Purpose: Check lens movement and focus servo function. The focus servo loop activates. If focus is found, 'FOC1' is displayed; otherwise, 'FOC0'. Manual disc rotation produces a 'whirring' sound. If focus is OK, press PLAY to enter Disc Motor Test. Press STOP to exit focus test and return to the main menu.
5.2 Disc Motor Test
Purpose: Check disc motor speed regulation. The motor starts rotating. Display shows 'dn1' if 75% of nominal speed is reached, otherwise 'dn0'. Note: The microprocessor displays speed flags, which may not be highly reliable. Check motor control circuit if in doubt. If disc speed is OK, press PLAY to enter Radial Test; press STOP to exit.
5.3 Radial Test
Purpose: Check radial loop lock and audio signal output. Radial servo loop is activated, mute released, and music is audible. Press NEXT to jump 10 tracks outwards, PREV to jump 10 tracks inwards. Press STOP to exit and return to the main menu.
