Naim CD Players Owner's Manual
Models: CDS, CDX, CD5
Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of Naim Audio CD players, including the CDS, CDX, and CD5 models, as well as the Narcom 2 remote control handset.
1.0 Equipment Installation
Your Naim equipment is typically installed by the dealer. This section provides guidance on cables and connections. Information provided here is not intended to reduce the dealer's responsibility.
1.1 Cables and Connections
Do not modify standard interconnect cables for safety and performance. Each cable has a band indicating the correct orientation, connecting to the signal source.
Naim loudspeaker cable is recommended and supplied by dealers, made to suit your installation. Leads should be at least 3.5 meters long and of equal length, with a maximum recommended length of 20 meters. Loudspeaker leads are directional; the printed arrow should point towards the speakers. Using alternative cables may degrade performance or damage the amplifier. An exception is the NAP 6-50 multi-room power amplifier, which is tolerant of various cable types and lengths.
Naim connectors are designed for a robust mechanical connection and must be used to comply with European safety regulations.
Plugs and sockets are chosen for optimal connection. Ensure they are clean and free from corrosion. To clean, switch off the equipment, unplug, and replug. Avoid using special contact cleaners or enhancers, as they can deposit films that degrade sound.
2.0 Getting Started
2.1 Switching On and Off
Source components and power supplies should be switched on before amplifiers. Always switch amplifiers off and wait approximately one minute for power supply capacitors to discharge before connecting or disconnecting leads. Use the product's power switch, not a mains outlet switch.
2.2 Running In
Naim equipment requires a significant run-in period for optimal performance, which can take up to five weeks. Consistent performance is achieved if the system is left switched on for long periods. Note that electronic equipment can be damaged by lightning; refer to the warnings section.
2.3 Mains Supply
Use 13 amp fuses for fused plugs; lower ratings may fail. Hi-fi systems sharing a mains circuit with other equipment can cause mains waveform distortion, potentially leading to transformer hum. This hum is local and does not affect performance. A separate, fused mains circuit (e.g., 30 or 45 Amp rated) can reduce hum and improve system performance by providing lower impedance and cleaner power.
Do not wire voltage-dependent resistors or noise suppressors into mains plugs, as they degrade the mains supply and sound.
2.4 Siting the Equipment
Locate power supplies and amplifiers a reasonable distance from other equipment to prevent transformer radiation from causing audible hum. A minimum distance of 300mm (12 inches) is recommended. Ensure your equipment rack or table can safely support the weight and is stable.
2.5 If You Have a Problem
Consumer protection varies by country. Dealers are typically responsible for ensuring satisfaction. Problems may stem from any part of the system or installation; consult your local dealer for diagnostics. Contact your local distributor or Naim for unresolved issues. Some equipment has territory-specific versions, making international guarantees impractical; establish guarantee arrangements with your dealer at the time of sale.
Repairs and updates must be performed by an authorized Naim dealer or Naim itself, as many components are specially made or matched.
3.0 Warnings
Naim equipment is designed for high sound quality, which may involve unfamiliar circumstances. Read this advice carefully.
Transformers in Naim power amplifiers and supplies may produce mechanical noise due to mains waveform distortion. Large transformers are sensitive to this. A separate mains circuit may mitigate this effect and improve sound quality. Consider mechanical transformer noise when siting equipment.
Radio frequency interference (RFI) may occur depending on your location and earthing arrangements. High levels of radio frequency radiation in some territories can affect equipment choice and siting. If RFI is a known issue, arrange a home demonstration. Susceptibility to RFI is linked to the wide internal bandwidth required for high sound quality. Systems with moving coil phono preamplifiers and active crossovers are more prone. RFI filter kits are available for some models, but may compromise sound quality. Naim equipment may be unsuitable in situations of extreme RFI.
Naim hi-fi systems can be damaged by lightning. Power amplifiers are particularly at risk; turn them off during lightning storms. For full protection, disconnect all mains plugs and aerial cables when not in use.
Do not expose equipment to dripping or splashing. Do not place objects filled with liquid (e.g., vases) on the equipment.
Important:
To comply with European safety regulations, use the Naim loudspeaker connectors supplied with amplifiers and loudspeakers.
Never modify Naim equipment without checking with the factory, dealer, or distributor, as unauthorized modifications will invalidate your guarantee.
For safety, never open Naim equipment without first disconnecting the mains.
All mains-powered equipment carries the label: "WARNING: THIS APPARATUS MUST BE EARTHED".
4.0 Connection
4.1 Mains Lead
Wire the mains lead as follows, matching wire colours to terminal markings:
- GREEN-AND-YELLOW wire: Connect to terminal marked 'E', safety earth symbol, or green/green-and-yellow.
- BLUE wire: Connect to terminal marked 'N' or black.
- BROWN wire: Connect to terminal marked 'L' or red.
4.2 Non-Rewireable Mains Plugs
If a non-rewireable plug is cut from a mains lead, it MUST be disposed of to render it unusable to prevent shock hazards.
4.3 Fuse Carrier
If the plug fuse carrier is damaged or lost, obtain a correct replacement from your dealer or Naim direct. Do not use the plug until the carrier is replaced.
4.4 Plug Fuses
Replace fuses only with ASTA or BS 1362 approved types.
Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with relevant EMC and Safety Standards, including FCC Part 15 for Class B digital devices. These limits aim to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. The equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not installed and used per instructions, it may cause interference to radio communications. No guarantee of non-interference in a particular installation is given. If interference occurs, users are encouraged to correct it by:
- Reorienting or relocating the receiving antenna.
- Increasing separation between the equipment and receiver.
- Connecting the equipment to a different circuit.
- Consulting a Naim dealer or a qualified radio/TV technician.
