Where should you install Alarm Pro?
Ring Alarm Pro can be placed on a table or mounted on a wall near your modem. If you plan to use it with your local internet provider, you will need to run an Ethernet cable from your modem to your Alarm Pro, and it must be plugged into an outlet.
Considerations for placement:
- Do not block air vents on the side of the Alarm Pro.
- Ensure there is enough space behind the unit for power and Ethernet cables.
- For tabletop installation with Power Packs, ensure sufficient space to stack them under or next to the Alarm Pro.
Network Diagram Description:
The diagram shows an Internet connection leading to a Modem, which connects via Ethernet to the Ring Alarm Pro. The Ring Alarm Pro then provides Wi-Fi connectivity to devices such as a Ring Doorbell, Ring Security Cam, Phone, and Computer.
Note: Using Alarm Pro as a Wi-Fi extender is not recommended, as it may prevent certain Ring Protect features from functioning.
Alarm Pro uses two apps
You will use the Ring app to set up Alarm Pro and other Ring devices, and the eero app to set up and manage your Wi-Fi network.
If you have existing Ring and/or eero accounts, gather your login credentials and ensure you are using the latest app versions.
- For new Ring users: Download the Ring - Always Home app and create your Ring account.
- For new eero users: Download the eero app.
For setup assistance, visit ring.com/alarm-pro.

Cellular internet options for Alarm Pro
Ring Alarm Pro offers solutions for when there's no internet connection, providing multiple layers of backup to keep you connected. This is often included with Ring Protect plans.
24/7 Backup Internet
When broadband internet is unavailable, your Alarm Pro uses 3GB of cellular data monthly to stay online and keep your Alarm Pro Wi-Fi network connected. You can opt in for Extra Data if needed, paying only for usage.
While using 24/7 Backup Internet, you retain Ring app access to your Ring cameras and alarm, and all other devices connected to your Alarm Pro Wi-Fi will remain online (if enabled in the eero app).
Note: A Ring Power Pack is necessary to use 24/7 Backup Internet if the power is also out.
Alarm Cellular Backup
If you exhaust your 24/7 Backup Internet data, Alarm Pro automatically switches to Alarm Cellular Backup. This service provides a cellular connection specifically for sending alarm signals when your alarm is triggered. Alarm Cellular Backup is included in select Ring Protect plans at no additional cost.
With Alarm Cellular Backup, you can access certain alarm security features, such as arming and disarming via the Ring app. However, Wi-Fi and general internet connectivity are not available, meaning Ring cameras and non-Ring devices will not connect to the internet.
Subscribe to Ring Protect
For features like 24/7 Backup Internet, Alarm Cellular Backup, Alarm Professional Monitoring, and app-based alarm control, subscribe to a Ring Protect plan. Visit ring.com/protect-plans to choose a plan that fits your needs. Extra Data fees are available online.
*Ring Alarm and its accessories require a subscription for digital arming/disarming, integration with other Ring and Echo products, digital notifications, and in-app features. Subscription sold separately.
Add Ring Cameras and Video Doorbells
You can set up Ring Video Doorbells and Ring Cameras at your location, utilizing the Wi-Fi provided by your Alarm Pro. All Ring cameras and doorbells are compatible with your Ring Alarm Pro's Wi-Fi network. Battery-powered Ring cameras can remain connected to the internet even during a power outage.
Consider adding a Ring Protect plan and Power Packs for external battery power. Cameras with battery power will continue to record and save videos even if your primary internet connection fails.
Using Alexa with Alarm Pro
Link Alexa to your Ring Alarm Pro to access various features via voice commands or app control:
- Arm and disarm using voice commands.
- Watch Live View for your Ring cameras on compatible Echo Show devices.
- Add Alexa Guard to receive alerts for sounds like breaking glass.
- Set up Alexa routines to control lights based on motion detection.

Setting up your alarm system
To set up your alarm system, add Ring Alarm security devices and optionally enroll in professional monitoring. This process is designed to help secure your home or business.
When adding Ring Alarm security devices, you first add each device to your Ring account via the Ring app, then configure its settings, and finally install it.
Important: Ring Alarm security devices have plastic battery tabs. Pull out only one tab at a time when prompted by the app to avoid setup issues.

Range Extender
Ring Alarm Range Extenders enhance your Z-Wave network, enabling communication between your Z-Wave devices, especially those farther from your Alarm Pro. For optimal performance, place the Range Extender between your base station and your most distant Ring Alarm devices.
Install steps:
- Follow the steps in the Ring app.
- Plug the extender into an outlet.
- Using the app, assign it a unique name and room.

Contact Sensor
Ring Alarm Contact Sensors can be installed on any door or window. The orientation does not matter, as long as the Sensor and its magnet are no more than 1 inch apart. It is recommended to install Contact Sensors on every door and window providing easy access to your home.
Install steps:
- Follow the steps in the Ring app. When prompted, pull out the battery tab to power the sensor on.
- In the Ring app, select the correct Sensor placement option to prevent false alarms. For doors you use frequently, choose the Main Door setting to enable Entry and Exit Delays.
- Choose the installation location for your Sensor and magnet. Align them so they are no more than 1 inch apart. For door installation, choose a side without hinges. (Refer to images for guidance).
- Clean the surface (wall or window). Peel the backing from the attached tape on the Sensor and magnet, then press them into place. Hold for 20 seconds.
For help with Contact Sensor installation, visit ring.com/alarm-pro for an installation video.
Diagram Descriptions:
- Sensor on Door: Shows a door with a Ring Contact Sensor mounted on the frame and a magnet mounted on the door. An arrow indicates the maximum distance of 1 inch between them. A checkmark icon is shown next to the sensor and magnet indicating correct placement, and a cross icon is shown next to a misaligned placement.
- Sensor/Magnet Alignment: Illustrates two scenarios: the first shows the sensor and magnet aligned with a maximum gap of 1 inch (marked '1" max'). The second shows a closer view of the magnet and sensor with a gap of 0.5 inches, indicating a suitable proximity.
Bypassing Sensors
The bypass feature allows you to temporarily ignore a Sensor, enabling you to arm your system even if a window is open or a device is malfunctioning. To bypass a sensor:
- Using your Keypad: Your Keypad will announce “Sensors require bypass,” and the checkmark (✔️) button will blink. Press the checkmark button to bypass, or do nothing to cancel arming.
- Using the app (Ring Protect required): You will receive an in-app notification.
What if your Contact Sensor is tampered?
The Ring app may display “Tampered” if your Contact Sensor cover is not fully closed. If you recently opened it, check the device and ensure the cover is properly secured. If you need to arm your system while a Sensor is in a “tampered” state, you must bypass it first.
Understanding Entry & Exit Delays
Exit Delay: Provides a short period to leave your premises after arming the system. You will hear chirps as a reminder of the remaining time to exit and close the door. Once the Exit Delay ends, the system is armed. Opening your door will then trigger the Entry Delay.
Entry Delay: Gives you a short window to disarm your alarm system after opening a door. Chirping sounds will occur during the delay. If the system is not disarmed before the delay ends, the Ring Alarm siren will sound.
To utilize Entry and Exit Delays, ensure your Contact Sensor is set to Main Door in the Ring app. You can customize each delay from 0 seconds to 180 seconds (3 minutes). Ensure you allow yourself adequate time to arm and disarm the system.
Motion Detector
Ring Alarm Motion Detectors are designed to detect intruders by monitoring for changes in heat and movement. By default, motion will trigger the alarm when the system is armed in Away mode.
Test Mode is available to help you identify blind spots, test pet detection, and check for environmental triggers that might cause false alarms. You can adjust Motion Detector settings in the app to ignore pets or detect only humans, or detect everything. In Test Mode, motion is continuously detected, and the detection clears a few seconds after motion stops.
Where should you place your Motion Detector?
- Install approximately 7 feet 6 inches above the floor, if possible.
- Install in a corner or on a flat wall (refer to illustrations).
- Choose a location with a clear line of sight, free from obstacles or blind spots.
How do you reduce false alarms?
- The detector should not face heat sources (e.g., stove, fireplace) or windows with direct sunlight.
- Never install a Motion Detector facing stairs.
- Ensure pets cannot reach the Motion Detector by climbing on furniture.
- Use the app to adjust pet sensitivity settings.
- Keep the default settings and only arm the Motion Detector in Away Mode.
Install steps:
- Follow the steps in the Ring app. To connect your Motion Detector, pull the battery tab.
- In the app, specify the placement location, give it a unique name, and assign it to a room.
- If mounting on a wall, clean the surface. Peel the backing from the two adhesive strips on the back and press firmly for 20 seconds. If mounting in a corner, peel the backing from the tape on each corner and press firmly for 20 seconds.
Diagram Descriptions:
- Motion Detector on a wall: Shows a Ring Motion Detector mounted on a flat wall, with lines indicating its field of view covering a sofa and a table.
- Motion Detector in a corner: Shows a Ring Motion Detector mounted in a corner, with lines indicating its field of view covering a sofa and a table.
Keypad
Your Ring Alarm Keypad is used to arm, disarm, and change alarm modes. It is recommended to place a Keypad near the door you use most often for exiting and entering, and potentially a second one in a bedroom or office for easy access.
Setup and install steps:
- Follow the directions in the app. When prompted, plug the Keypad into an outlet using the included USB cable and wall adapter.
- Give your Keypad a unique name and add it to a room. Remember to create a personal access code to arm and disarm your Alarm.
- The Keypad can be mounted flush on a wall or placed on a table. It can remain plugged in or operate on its internal battery.
Note: If using the Keypad unplugged, charge it fully before first use.
Diagram Descriptions:
- Keypad table placement: Shows how to attach the bracket to the Keypad, flip it over, and slide it back on to elevate the Keypad for table placement.
- Keypad wall mounting: Shows how to slide the bracket off the Keypad, mount the bracket to the wall using anchors and screws (pre-drilling recommended), and then slide the Keypad onto the bracket.
Using the Keypad emergency buttons (Professional monitoring only)
In an emergency, the Keypad (2nd gen) provides one-touch access to help. Press and hold any button for three seconds to send a signal to the monitoring center and request emergency assistance.
- Police button: Sends a panic signal to request police dispatch to your address and sounds the siren.
- Fire button: Requests fire department dispatch to your address and sounds the siren.
- Medical button: Requests an emergency medical response to your address.
TIP: If you are self-monitored, pressing the Police or Fire button will only sound the siren; no emergency services will be requested.
24/7 Professional Monitoring
Professional monitoring is a service that alerts authorities and notifies you and your emergency contacts when Ring Alarm Pro detects a security threat. A Ring Protect subscription is required for this service.
How does it work?
When a threat is detected, your Alarm Pro sends a signal to the monitoring center. The center contacts you to verify the emergency and can dispatch emergency responders if needed.
For more information, see page 31.
Customize your police response:
After enrolling in professional monitoring, use the Ring app to specify when you want the monitoring center to request police dispatch for burglar alarms.
One-Touch Emergency Response with SOS:
Instantly request police, fire, or medical services using the Ring app dashboard or Ring camera Live View when enrolled in professional monitoring.
How do you get professional monitoring?
Visit ring.com/protect-pro to subscribe to Ring Protect, then enroll in professional monitoring via the Ring app.
Permits and Registrations:
Many local jurisdictions require an alarm permit or registration for professionally monitored alarms. For more information, see page 35.
7-Day Practice Mode
7-Day Practice Mode helps you learn your alarm system and reduce false alarms. During the first seven days of professional monitoring, triggering your alarm results in an automated message call, but no emergency responders are dispatched. After seven days, your alarm enters full professional monitoring, and triggering it will result in a live call from the monitoring center and potential emergency response.
Download your insurance certificate:
If you have a professionally monitored alarm system, you may qualify for an insurance discount. To download a certificate for your insurance company, open the Ring app or log into Ring.com. Navigate to Menu > Settings > Monitoring > Certificate.
What is self monitoring?
If you opt out of professional monitoring, your alarm system will be self-monitored. In an emergency, your siren will sound, but it will not signal the monitoring center, and responders will not be dispatched unless you call them yourself. You can switch to professional monitoring at any time. A comparison chart for professional and self-monitoring is available on page 31.
Verbal Password (Professional monitoring only)
When the monitoring center calls, you and your emergency contacts will be asked to verify your identity using a verbal password. Choose a password you can remember and store it securely. It should be a single word (no spaces) or a number, and different from any Keypad access codes.
If you forget your verbal password, you can create a new one in the Ring app.
Important: Share your verbal password with all of your emergency contacts.
Emergency Contacts (Professional monitoring only)
When your Alarm Pro signals an alarm to the monitoring center, they will call your list of emergency contacts—trusted individuals who can assist with your home if you are unreachable. It is recommended to grant these contacts Shared or Guest User access to your Alarm Pro.
Emergency contacts should:
- Answer their phone and handle emergencies.
- Respond to your address if assistance is needed and disarm the alarm.
- Unlock your home to grant access to emergency responders.
If your emergency contacts change or their phone numbers are updated, remember to update the Ring app.
Ensure your emergency contacts save our number! When we call during an emergency, everyone needs to answer.

Arming and disarming Alarm Pro
Understanding Modes
Your system offers three Security Modes: Disarmed, Home, and Away. These modes determine how your Ring devices function when you are home or away. Ring Alarm security devices use these modes to actively monitor sensors at your location. Ring Cameras can be configured to prevent video recording on specific cameras when you are home, and only record when you are away. Cameras not using modes will detect motion and record 24/7.
You can change Alarm Modes using the Alarm Keypad. With a Ring Protect subscription, you can also change modes via the Ring app.*
*Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a subscription for digital arming/disarming, integration with other Ring and Echo products, digital notifications, and in-app features. Subscription sold separately.
Disarmed Mode
Use Disarmed Mode when you are home and want unrestricted movement. By default:
- Alarm: No internal sensors are armed.
- Ring Video Doorbells will always detect and record motion.
- Outdoor Ring cameras detect and record motion; indoor cameras do not.
Home Mode
Arm in Home Mode when you are home and want enhanced security. By default:
- Alarm: Only door and window Contact Sensors are armed.
- Ring Video Doorbells will always detect and record motion.
- Outdoor Ring cameras detect and record motion; indoor cameras do not.
Away Mode
Use Away Mode when you are away from home. By default:
- Alarm: All sensors are armed.
- All Ring Video Doorbells and cameras detect motion and record video.
With a Ring Protect subscription, you can use the Ring app to enable mode settings for Ring doorbells and cameras. You can select which Ring Alarm sensors are armed in Home and Away Modes, and which cameras and doorbells start recording. Access this via the Ring app menu: Settings > Modes.
*Depending on kit purchased, subscription may be required for in-app features and digital notifications.
How to Arm and Disarm
Using the Keypad
Enter your personal access code, then press the Disarmed, Away, or Home Mode button.
Using the app (Ring Protect required)
Open the Ring app and tap your desired Mode.
TIP: Disarming will cancel your alarm signal. If professionally monitored, disarming during an emergency alarm event cancels the signal to the monitoring center. For a real emergency, tap the Silence Siren button in the app instead; this silences the siren but still sends the alarm signal.

Managing alerts (Ring Protect required)
Your Alarm Pro can send notifications to your phone and email for events like alarm sounds, low battery, and other alerts. To adjust your alerts, open the menu, tap Settings, and select Alarm Alerts. Each Shared User can enable or disable alerts independently, except for Emergency Alarming alerts, which cannot be turned off.
Getting emergency alerts in Do Not Disturb Mode
You can configure your mobile device to bypass its Do Not Disturb settings and receive Alarm Pro emergency alerts immediately, even when DND is active. To override Do Not Disturb mode, open the Ring app, navigate to Menu > Settings > Alarm Alerts.
Preventing false alarms
A “false alarm” occurs when your alarm system is triggered accidentally, sounding the siren without a real emergency. False alarms divert emergency responders from genuine emergencies, and homeowners or businesses may face fines.
Ways to prevent false alarms:
- Ensure emergency contacts know your verbal password.
- Provide everyone at your location with Shared or Guest User access, and ensure Shared Users download the Ring app.
- Save the Ring Monitoring phone number (833-209-2159) as a contact.
- Ensure all users know when to arm/disarm and which modes to use (Home/Away).
- Verify Motion Detectors are not aimed at heat sources, stairs, or windows.
- Check Motion Detector coverage for blind spots. Adjust sensitivity settings in the app to prevent pets from triggering the alarm.
- Test your Exit and Entry Delays to ensure they provide adequate time.
Alarm Permits and Registration (Professional monitoring only)
Ring strives to provide current information on local permit and registration laws, but these requirements can change. You can contact your local municipality directly for specific alarm system permit requirements. Ring will email you if a permit is needed and provide details. Permit fees may apply.
If you do not receive a permit email from Ring within five business days (and it's not in your Spam folder), contact Ring Support.
Adding permit information to the Ring app
In some areas, emergency responders may not be dispatched without your permit or registration number on file. If your alarm permit includes a number and expiration date, add it to your account:
- In the Ring app, open the menu, tap Settings, tap Monitoring, then tap Permit.
- Select your Permit type and enter the permit number and date. If your permit lacks a number, type “Registered” in the app.
