Regulations and Standards
This product complies with New Zealand Building Code and Healthy Homes Standards, specifically Clause G4 (Ventilation) and Acceptable Solution G4/AS1 Fourth Edition for mechanical ventilation in accommodation units. It also adheres to Residential Tenancy Regulations for the Healthy Homes Standards, Sub Part 4 - Ventilation Standards.
Compliance Requirements:
- Mandatory mechanical extract systems must deliver minimum airflow rates for the complete installed ventilation system, accounting for ducting, grilles, and accessories.
- Fan selection is crucial for overcoming ducting system pressure drops.
- Rigid duct systems are recommended for optimal efficiency.
Airflow Rates for Different Rooms:
Room | Airflow Rate (min.) | |
---|---|---|
Intermittent | Continuous | |
Toilet1 | 25 l/s | 10 l/s |
Bathroom/shower | 25 l/s | 10 l/s |
Laundry2 | 40 l/s | 12 l/s |
Kitchen | 50 l/s | 12 l/s |
1 Toilets only require ventilation if they have no openable windows.
2 Simx recommends 40 l/s for laundries with unvented non-condensing tumble dryers as covered in AS 1668: Part 2 2012.
Fan Selection Guidance:
The selection of the correct fan is vital for achieving the required airflow rates based on room type, ducting length, number of bends, and fan type. Refer to the provided tables for specific fan selections based on bathroom and kitchen requirements.
Installation and Electrical Connections
Important Safety Precautions:
- Installation and electrical connection must be carried out by a registered electrician.
- Ensure the supply voltage matches the appliance voltage.
- All wiring must comply with current national wiring rules and regulations (e.g., AS/NZS3000:2017).
- Do not tamper with or modify the product without prior written approval from the manufacturer.
- An external grille must be fitted when passing through an external wall.
- Fan kits should only be installed by fixed wiring; a flexible cord should not be used.
- The fan is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience, unless supervised.
- Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the fan.
- In case of damage to the supply cord, do not tamper with it; have it repaired or replaced by the manufacturer or an appointed representative.
- The fan kit must be installed so that the blades are more than 2.1m above the floor.
- Take precautions to avoid the back-flow of gases into the room from open flues of fuel-burning appliances.
- Before installation, turn off the main electricity supply.
- Keep combustible materials away from the fan kit.
- Do not use near water or in wet areas.
- Do not immerse the cord or plug in water.
- Do not insert foreign objects into ventilation openings.
- Keep air inlets and outlets clean and free of blockages.
- Do not use in areas where flammable liquids are stored or used.
- Dispose of the product responsibly, utilizing local council collection points for recyclable materials.
Installation Steps:
- Select the preferred interior grille (circular eggcrate or square low profile).
- For interior grille installation: If using gib-fixing clips, cut a 130mm hole. If not, cut a 125mm diameter hole. Ensure the area above is clear.
- Fit the white fastening wedge-type clips onto the grille body (if applicable). Secure the grille with screws, using longer screws if the ceiling/wall lining is thicker than 12mm.
- Fasten the ducting onto the grilles using tape. Push the grille into the hole and secure the clips. Fit the fascia onto the chassis.
- Select a suitable position for the fan unit, screw it to a joist using two screws. The fan motor is ball-bearing designed for longevity.
- For exterior grille installation: Choose a weatherproof cowl or fixed grille. Select a position in the soffit or on an outside wall. Remove the grille insert/cowl. Cut a 135mm hole, ensuring the area above is clear.
- Attach one end of the flexible duct to the spigot with duct tape and feed it through the hole. Mark and drill fixing holes for the exterior grille, then screw the grille to the soffit/wall and refit the chosen grille to the chassis.
- Connect the flexible duct to the discharge spigot of the fan and secure with tape. Ensure ducting runs are as straight as possible for optimal performance.
- Connect the remaining duct to the ceiling grille and the fan.
Electrical Connections:
- Standard Switching Model (FAN0616): Connect the fan to a light switch or a dedicated fan switch. The fan should not be accessible from the shower or bath area.
- Timer Switching Model (FAN0617): Connect the fan to a light switch or a dedicated fan switch. The fan will run for a preset time (1 minute, adjustable between 1-20 minutes) after the light is switched on. The fan should not be accessible from the shower or bath area.
Wiring Notes:
- All wiring must be fixed securely.
- The cable to the fan should be a minimum of 1mm² in section.
- All wiring must comply with current regulations and be installed by a registered electrician.
- The time delay for the timer model is preset to approximately one minute and can be adjusted.
Diagrams:
Figure 1 illustrates the wiring for the Standard Switching model.
Figure 2 illustrates the wiring for the Timer Switching model, including the PCB board and rotary switch for timer adjustment.
Timer Adjustment (Timer Model FAN0617):
- Switch off the power to the fan.
- Remove the cover.
- Locate the rotary adjuster on the PCB board.
- Rotate the serrated adjuster wheel using a thumbnail:
- Right (+) to increase time.
- Left (-) to decrease time.
- Only adjust with the power switched off.
Typical Installation Diagram: A diagram shows the inline extraction fan installed in a ceiling space, connected via flexible ducting to an internal grille in the room and an external grille on the exterior wall.
