Sony CMT-BX20i Micro Hi-Fi Component System
Important Safety Information

Basic Operations
Operations can be performed using the remote control or buttons on the unit.
Using the Remote
Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries, matching polarities. Batteries typically last six months. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types. Remove batteries if the remote is not used for an extended period.
Setting the Clock
- Turn on the system using the POWER button ().
- Press TIMER MENU () and select “CLOCK SET?” using / (), then press ENTER ().
- Set the hour using / (), then press ENTER (). Repeat for minutes.
Clock settings are lost upon power disconnection or failure. Press DISPLAY () to view the clock for about 8 seconds when the system is off.
Using the iPod
Insert an iPod Dock Adaptor into the unit’s connector () before use. Refer to the adaptor’s instructions for details.
Adjusting the Sound
- Volume: Press VOLUME +/ ().
- Sound Effect (DSGX): Press DSGX () for a more dynamic sound.
- EQ: Press EQ () to select “BASS” or “TREBLE,” then use +/ () to adjust the level.
Playing a CD/MP3 Disc
- Select the CD function using FUNCTION ().
- Press OPEN/CLOSE () on the unit, place a disc label-side up, and press OPEN/CLOSE () again to close the tray.
- Press PLAY () to start playback.
Playback Controls:
- Pause: Press PAUSE (). Press again to resume.
- Stop: Press STOP ().
- Folder Select (MP3): Use +/ ().
- Track/File Select: Use / ().
- Find Point: Hold / () during playback.
- Repeat Play: Press REPEAT () for “REP” (all) or “REP1” (one).
- Play Mode: Press PLAY MODE () while stopped to select normal, shuffle (“SHUF”), or program (“PGM”) play.
Notes on MP3 Discs: Supports .MP3 files. Maximum 255 folders, 511 files, 512 total files/folders, and 8 folder levels. Compatibility with all MP3 encoding software is not guaranteed.
Notes on Multisession Discs: Only the first session (CD-DA or MP3) is played.
Listening to the Radio
- Select “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” using FUNCTION ().
- Select tuning mode using TUNING MODE () until “AUTO” appears.
- Tune stations using +/ (). Scanning stops automatically when a station is tuned.
To stop scanning: Press STOP ().
To tune weak signals: Press TUNING MODE () until “AUTO” and “PRESET” disappear, then press +/ () repeatedly.
To reduce FM static: Press FM MODE () until “MONO” appears to disable stereo reception.
Playing the iPod
- Select the iPod function using FUNCTION ().
- Place the iPod on the unit’s connector ().
- Press PLAY () to start playback.
iPod Controls:
- Pause/Stop: Press PAUSE () or STOP ().
- Scroll Menus: Use / ().
- Select Track/Chapter: Use / (). Hold for fast forward/rewind.
- Choose Item: Press ENTER ().
- Find Point: Hold / () during playback.
- Return/Select Menu: Use ()/TOOL MENU ()/RETURN ().
Using the System as a Battery Charger
The iPod charges when connected, whether the system is on or off. Charging status appears on the iPod display.
To stop charging: Remove the iPod.
Changing the Display
- Press DISPLAY () repeatedly to change information (track/file number, name, artist, album, folder, playing time).
- Press DISPLAY () when the system is off to view the clock for 8 seconds.
Notes on Display: Characters that cannot be displayed appear as “_”. Some playing times may not be displayed. Folder/file names not conforming to ISO9660 standards may not display correctly. ID3 tag information (up to 62 characters) is displayed for MP3 files.
Using Optional Audio Components
- Headphones: Connect to the PHONES jack ().
- Audio Input: Connect an external component to the AUDIO IN jack () using an analog audio cord. Turn down the system volume, then select the AUDIO IN function.
Antennas
Position antennas for good reception, away from speaker and power cords to avoid noise.
- FM lead antenna: Extend horizontally.
- AM loop antenna: Position for best reception.
Power
Connect the power cord to a wall socket. Use the supplied plug adaptor if necessary. For models with a voltage selector, set it to the local power line voltage.
Speakers
Connect speaker cords (Red/ for positive, Black/ for negative) to the respective speaker terminals. Ensure only the stripped portion of the cord is inserted.
When Carrying This System
- Remove any disc.
- Select the CD function using FUNCTION ().
- Hold down VOL + () and DSGX () on the unit, and press OPEN/CLOSE () until “STANDBY” appears.
- Unplug the power cord after “LOCK” appears.
Notes on iPod Handling: Handle the iPod carefully when connecting/disconnecting to avoid connector damage. Do not carry the unit with an iPod attached. Brace the unit when connecting/disconnecting the iPod to avoid pressing its controls.
Other Operations
Creating Your Own Program (Program Play)
- Select CD function.
- Press PLAY MODE (10) until “PGM” appears while stopped.
- Press / (12) to select track/file number. For MP3s, select folder first using +/- (12).
- Press ENTER (11) to add the track/file to the program. Up to 25 tracks/files can be programmed.
- Press PLAY (7) to play the program.
To cancel Program Play: Press PLAY MODE (10) until “PGM” disappears.
To delete the last track/file: Press CLEAR (17) while stopped.
Presetting Radio Stations
- Tune in the desired station.
- Press TUNER MEMORY (23).
- Select preset number using +/- (12).
- Press ENTER (11).
Up to 20 FM and 10 AM stations can be preset. Preset stations are retained for about half a day without power. To recall a preset station, press TUNING MODE (10) until “PRESET” appears, then select the preset number with +/- (12).
Using the Timers
Sleep Timer:
Press SLEEP (24) repeatedly. Selecting “AUTO” turns the system off after the current disc stops or in 100 minutes.
Play Timer:
Requires the clock to be set.
- Prepare sound source and adjust volume. Create a program if starting from a specific track.
- Press TIMER MENU (18), then select “PLAY SET?” using / (22) and press ENTER (11).
- Set start time (hour, then minute) using / (22) and ENTER (11).
- Set stop time using the same procedure.
- Select sound source using / (22) and ENTER (11).
- Press POWER (1/ 1) to turn off the system. The system turns on 15 seconds before the preset time.
To activate/check timer: Press TIMER MENU (18), select “TIMER SEL?” then “PLAY SEL?”, and press ENTER (11).
To cancel timer: Repeat activation procedure until “TIMER OFF?” appears, then press ENTER (11).
To change setting: Start over from step 1.
Troubleshooting
- Ensure power and speaker cords are securely connected.
- STANDBY indicator flashes: Unplug, check voltage selector, speakers, ventilation, and iPod connector. Reconnect power after the indicator stops flashing. Contact dealer if issue persists.
- General Sound Issues: Ensure symmetrical speaker placement and use supplied speakers. Move system away from noise sources or try a different wall socket. Consider a noise filter.
- Remote Not Functioning: Remove obstacles, position unit away from fluorescent lights, point remote at sensor, or move remote closer.
- CD/MP3 Player Issues: Clean disc, move system away from vibration, or separate speakers. If playback doesn't start from the first track, ensure normal play mode is selected (no “PGM” or “SHUF”). Disc access may take longer for complex or multisession discs.
- Tuner Issues: Connect antenna properly, reposition antenna, keep antenna away from cords, use external antenna, or consult dealer for AM antenna issues. Turn off nearby electrical equipment.
- Changing AM Tuning Interval: Tune AM station, turn off system, hold ENTER (11) and press POWER (I/1) to reset interval.
- Improving Tuner Reception: Turn off CD player power via CD power management function (select CD function, turn off system, hold / (16) and press POWER (I/1) on unit until “CD POWER OFF” appears). Note: Disc access time increases.
- Resetting System: Disconnect/reconnect power, turn on, then press POWER (I/ 1), VOL+ (13), and /CANCEL (16) simultaneously. All user settings will be deleted.
- iPod No Sound/Distorted Sound: Ensure secure connection, check iPod playback, adjust volume, or set iPod EQ to “Off” or “Flat.”
- iPod Not Charging: Ensure secure connection.
Messages:
- CD Over: Reached end of disc.
- Complete: Preset operation successful.
- LOCKED: Disc tray issue; contact dealer.
- No Disc: No disc loaded or disc unplayable.
- No Step: Programmed tracks/files erased.
- Push STOP!: PLAY MODE pressed during playback.
- Reading: System reading disc information.
- Step Full!: Exceeded maximum program tracks/files.
- TIME NG!: Play Timer start and end times are the same.
Precautions
Discs This System CAN Play:
- Audio CD
- CD-R/CD-RW (audio data/MP3 files)
Discs This System CANNOT Play:
- CD-ROM
- CD-R/CD-RW not conforming to music CD or MP3 format standards (ISO9660 Level 1/2, Joliet, multisession).
- Multisession discs not properly closed.
- Poor quality, dirty, scratched, or incompatible recorded discs.
- Incorrectly finalized CD-R/CD-RW.
- Discs with files other than MPEG 1 Audio Layer-3 (MP3).
- Non-standard shaped discs.
- Discs with attached tape, paper, or stickers.
- Rental/used discs with extended glue seals.
- Discs with tacky printed labels.
Notes on Discs:
- Wipe discs from center to edge with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents.
- Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, or leaving discs in a hot car.
Note on DualDiscs:
Playback of DualDiscs is not guaranteed as the audio side may not conform to CD standards.
Music Discs with Copyright Protection:
This product is designed for standard CDs. Some discs with copyright protection may not be playable.

On Safety:
- Disconnect the power cord when not in use for extended periods. Grip the plug, not the cord, when unplugging.
- If solid object or liquid enters the system, unplug and have it checked by qualified personnel.
- The AC power cord should only be replaced by qualified service personnel.
On Placement:
- Avoid inclined positions, extreme temperatures, dust, humidity, or direct sunlight.
- Be careful placing the unit on specially treated surfaces to avoid staining.
- If the system is moved from cold to warm conditions, condensation may form. Leave the system on for about an hour to allow moisture to evaporate.
On Heat Buildup:
Heat buildup during operation is normal. Do not obstruct ventilation holes.
On the Speaker System:
Speakers are not magnetically shielded. If picture distortion occurs on nearby TVs, turn off the TV for 15-30 minutes. If distortion persists, move speakers away from the TV.
Cleaning the Cabinet:
Clean with a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powder, or solvents.
