Sonos Ray Soundbar
Overview
The Sonos Ray is a compact soundbar designed for music, TV, and more.
Key Features:
- Quick and easy setup with a single cable connection to your TV.

- Streams music, radio, and podcasts even when the TV is off.

Controls and Lights
The soundbar features touch controls for various functions.
Volume Control
Touch for small adjustments or touch and hold to quickly change the volume:
- Volume up: Right touch control
- Volume down: Left touch control
Note: Volume can also be adjusted using the Sonos app or your TV remote.
Play/Pause
Touch to play or pause audio.
Next/Previous (music only)
- Swipe right across touch controls to skip to the next song.
- Swipe left to go to the previous song.
Note: Skipping forward or backward is not possible when listening to a radio station.
Status Light
Displays the product's connection to WiFi, indicates when the volume is muted, and signals errors. The status light can be turned off in Settings if distracting.
Connector Panel
The soundbar has the following connectors on its rear panel:
- Join button: Press to connect during setup.
- AC power (mains) input: Use only the supplied power cord; using a third-party cord may void your warranty.
- Optical port: Use to connect the soundbar to your TV.
- Ethernet port: Optional port for connecting to a router, computer, or network-attached storage (NAS) device.
Select a Location
Ray can be wall-mounted above or below your TV, or placed on a TV stand.
TV Stand Placement
- Place horizontally on a stable, level surface at least 2" (50mm) from the TV.
- Do not place vertically or on its side.
- Ensure the TV's IR sensor is not blocked.
- If placed on a shelf, position it at the front with at least 2" (minimum) clearance on both sides for optimal sound quality.
- Maintain at least 1" (25mm) space above Ray to access touch controls. For best sound quality, keep both ends at least 1" (25mm) from walls or obstructions.
- Ensure touch controls are facing upwards.
Wall Mount
Sonos offers a custom-designed Sonos Ray Wall Mount (sold separately). Refer to "Wall mount" for more information.
Connect the Cables
Before starting:
- Disconnect any existing home theater or surround sound equipment from your TV.
- Connect external devices (e.g., cable box, DVD player) directly to your TV.
- Turn on your TV.
- Connect the power cord and plug in the soundbar. Use only the supplied power cord.
- Remove the protective cap from the optical cable and connect it to the soundbar's optical port.
- Remove the protective cap from the optical cable and connect it to your TV's optical digital OUT port. The TV's optical adapter port is "D-shaped"; ensure correct alignment to avoid cable damage.
Home Theater
Sonos products enhance TV sound and music playback. Create a home theater system by adding rear surrounds and a Sub.
Home Theater Settings
Adjust sound settings and speaker behavior via the Sonos app.
- TV Dialog Sync: Adjust audio delay (lip sync) if TV audio is out of sync with video.
- Group Audio Delay: Adjust settings for audio issues when playing to a group.
- TV Autoplay: Automatically switches audio to TV when the TV is turned on. Can be turned off in room settings.
- Ungroup on Autoplay: If grouped, the speaker automatically drops from the group when the TV turns on. Can be turned off in room settings.
- Speech enhancement: Makes TV dialogue clearer.
- Night sound: Reduces the intensity of loud sounds while maintaining balance.
- Use IR: Allows an IR remote to control Sonos.
- Remote Control Setup: Program a remote control during setup or anytime thereafter.
Set up Surround Speakers
Turn two Sonos speakers or a Sonos Amp and non-Sonos speakers into separate right and left channels for your home theater.
- Place surround speakers about 10 ft from the listening position, angled towards the seating area.
- Navigate to [System], and pick the room you want to tune.
- Select a room with a soundbar and choose "Add Surrounds".
Note: Grouping rooms or creating a stereo pair will disable surround sound.
Surround Audio Settings
Surround sound is optimized during setup and adjustable:

Trueplay™
Trueplay tuning measures room acoustics and fine-tunes Sonos speakers for optimal sound. It requires an iOS device (iOS 8 or later). During tuning, move around the room with your mobile device.
- Select [System], and pick the room you want to tune.
- Select "Trueplay Tuning".
Auto Trueplay
Portable Sonos products (e.g., Sonos Roam, Move) tune themselves automatically using the speaker's microphone. This allows for periodic tuning adjustments for great sound anywhere.
Navigate to [System] and select your portable speaker to enable auto Trueplay.
Product Settings
Customize Sonos products via the Sonos app by going to [System] and selecting a product.
- Room Name: Change the speaker's name if moved to a new room.
- Turn off WiFi: (Not available for Sonos Era 100, Era 300, or portable products) Turn off WiFi when connected via Ethernet to reduce power consumption and improve wired connectivity. This can also reduce internal temperature for products like Amp and Port when racked or stacked. Note: WiFi is turned off for Era 100 and Era 300 when using a Sonos Combo Adapter with an Ethernet cable.
- EQ: Adjust sound settings (bass, treble, loudness) using preset equalization.
- Trueplay: Adapts sound for surroundings and content; portable products tune automatically.
- Volume Limit: Set a maximum volume per room.
- Status Light: Displays WiFi connection, mute status, and errors. Can be turned off in Settings.
- Touch Controls: Disable touch controls to prevent accidental adjustments by children or pets.
- Battery Saver (portable products only): Set portable speakers to power off automatically instead of sleeping to save battery life.
Line-In
(For Sonos products with line-in capability)
When connecting external audio devices (projector, turntable, stereo), adjust line-in settings:
- Source name: Assign a name to the line-in device.
- Source level: Adjust the line-in source level if audio is too quiet or distorted.
- Audio Delay: Add a delay to reduce audio issues when playing line-in audio on grouped speakers.
- Autoplay: Choose a room to start line-in audio automatically when Sonos detects a signal.

Wall Mount
The Sonos Ray Wall Mount kit (sold separately, available at sonos.com) is designed for flat wall mounting.
Guidelines
- Ensure enough space between Ray and the TV to access touch controls.
- For best sound quality, keep both ends of Ray at least 1' (30cm) from walls or obstructions.

Set it up (Wall Mount Installation Steps)
- If your TV is wall-mounted, align the top edge of the bracket with the bottom of your TV, leaving at least 2.5 inches (mm) between them.
- Mark the screw locations and remove the bracket.
- If using wall anchors, drill pilot holes with a 5/16" drill bit, starting with the left hole. Insert wall anchors. Do not use wall anchors in wood or plastic. Refer to "Wall mounting information".
- Position the wall mount bracket over the screw locations, using a level for accuracy. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver or power drill to attach the bracket to the wall, ensuring the center notch points up.
- Using a Phillips head screwdriver, fasten the 2 attachment screws to the back of the soundbar, ensuring they are fully tightened.
- Remove the protective cap from the optical cable, then connect the power and optical cables to the back of the soundbar.
- Slide the soundbar down so the attachment screws fit into the slots on the wall bracket. Ensure touch controls face up and the Sonos Ray is fully seated.
