Sonos Ray Compact Soundbar User Guide

Guides > Ray

Overview

The Sonos Ray is a compact soundbar designed for music, TV, and more. It offers a quick and easy setup, connecting to a TV with a single cable. The versatile design allows placement on a credenza, wall mounting, or integration into a TV stand. Users can stream music, radio, and podcasts even when the TV is off. The system is expandable, allowing the addition of a Sonos Sub and two Sonos speakers (e.g., Sonos Ones) for 5.1 surround sound. The entire Sonos system, including the Ray, can be controlled via the Sonos app, available for Android and iOS devices. For initial setup, refer to the 'Setup' section of this guide.

Controls and Lights

The Sonos Ray features intuitive touch controls and a status light for easy operation and system feedback.

Volume Control

Touch the controls for small adjustments or touch and hold to quickly change the volume:

Note: Volume can also be adjusted using the Sonos app or a TV remote.

Play/Pause

Touch the center of the controls to play or pause audio.

Next/Previous (Music Only)

Note: Skipping forward or backward is not possible when listening to a radio station.

Status Light

The status light indicates the product's connection to WiFi, signals when the volume is muted, and displays error conditions. More information on status light indications can be found in the product settings.

Connector Panel

The rear panel of the Sonos Ray features several ports for connectivity:

  1. Join Button: Used to connect the soundbar during the initial setup process.
  2. AC Power (Mains) Input: Connects the soundbar to power. Use only the supplied power cord; using a third-party power cord will void the warranty.
  3. Optical Port: Connects the soundbar to a TV using an optical cable.
  4. Ethernet Port: (Optional) Use an Ethernet cable to connect to a router, computer, or network-attached storage (NAS) device for a wired network connection.

Select a Location

The Sonos Ray can be wall-mounted above or below a TV, or placed on a TV stand.

TV Stand Placement

Wall Mount

The soundbar can be secured to a wall using a compatible wall mount. Sonos recommends the custom-designed Sonos Ray Wall Mount, sold separately and available at sonos.com. Refer to the 'Wall mount' section for more information.

Connect the Cables

Before You Start

  1. Connect the power cord: Plug the supplied power cord into the soundbar and then into a power outlet.

Note: Only use the supplied power cord; using a third-party power cord will void the warranty.

  2. Connect the optical cable: Connect the included optical cable to the optical port on the back of the soundbar.

Visual description: A diagram shows the optical cable being connected to the optical port on the back of the Sonos Ray.

  3. Connect to TV: Connect the other end of the optical cable to the TV's optical digital OUT port. Ensure the D-shaped connector aligns correctly with the port to avoid damaging the cable.

(not on portable products)
Disable the speaker's WiFi when connected via Ethernet cable to reduce power consumption and improve connectivity for wired speakers. For products like Amp and Port, this can also reduce internal temperature when stacked.
EQAdjust sound settings such as bass, treble, balance, or loudness to suit personal preferences. Sonos products ship with preset equalization settings.
TrueplayAdapts the sound to the unique acoustics of the room and content. Requires an iOS mobile device (iOS 8 or later) for tuning. During tuning, the user moves the mobile device around the room. Trueplay tuning is not available if VoiceOver is enabled on the iOS device.
Volume LimitSet a maximum volume for each room.
Status LightControls whether the speaker's status light is displayed. The light indicates WiFi connection, muted volume, and errors. It can be turned off if distracting.
Touch ControlsDisable the touch control buttons on the speaker to prevent accidental adjustments by children or pets.

Home Theater

Sonos products provide full-theater sound and music playback. A home theater system can be created by adding a pair of rear surrounds and a Sonos Sub.

Set Up Surround Speakers

Two Sonos speakers (of the same model), or a Sonos Amp with non-Sonos speakers, can be configured as separate right and left channels for a home theater system.

  1. Place each surround speaker approximately 10 feet from the primary listening position, angled towards the seating area.
  2. In the Sonos app, go to ⚙️ > System.
  3. Select a room with a soundbar and choose 'Add Surrounds' to begin.

Note: Grouping rooms or creating a stereo pair will not provide surround sound.

Surround Audio Settings

During setup, surround sound is optimized for the room. These settings are adjustable:

SettingDescription
SurroundsTurn surround sound On or Off.
TV LevelAdjust surround volume for TV audio.
Music LevelAdjust surround volume for music.
Music PlaybackChoose between 'Ambient' (subtle) or 'Full' (louder, full range). This setting does not apply to Dolby Atmos Music playback.

Trueplay™

Trueplay tuning measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings, and other surfaces in a room, then fine-tunes the Sonos speaker for optimal sound quality regardless of placement. Trueplay works with iOS mobile devices running iOS 8 or later. During tuning, the user moves the mobile device around the room.

  1. In the Sonos app, select ⚙️ > System, and choose the room to tune.
  2. Select 'Trueplay Tuning' to start.

Note: Trueplay tuning is not available if VoiceOver is enabled on the iOS device. Turn VoiceOver off in device settings before tuning speakers.

Auto Trueplay

Portable Sonos products like Sonos Roam and Move can tune themselves automatically. Auto Trueplay uses the speaker's microphone to detect the environment and make periodic tuning adjustments, ensuring great sound wherever the speaker is and whatever is being listened to.

To enable Auto Trueplay, go to ⚙️ > System in the Sonos app and select the portable speaker.
