Important Safety Information
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
- Never operate the log splitter under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication that may impair judgment.
- Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, children, and pets.
- Operate the log splitter on a level, stable surface.
- Do not attempt to split logs larger than the recommended capacity (24 inches in length).
- Keep hands and feet clear of the splitting wedge and log during operation.
- Regularly inspect the machine for damaged or loose parts before each use.
- Refer to the engine manual for specific engine safety guidelines.
Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps carefully to assemble your BILT HARD 25-Ton Log Splitter. It is recommended to have assistance due to the weight and size of components.
Installation Guide Video
This video provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide for the assembly of the BILT HARD 25-Ton Gas Log Splitter. It covers unboxing, component identification, and detailed installation procedures for all major parts.
Step-by-Step Assembly
- Unboxing and Component Check: Confirm all four packages have been received. If any are missing, contact after-sales service.
- Attach the Tube Base: Remove the two screws from the tube base. Release the support leg, insert the base connector into the long tube base, and secure it with the previously removed screws.
- Mount the Tires: Remove the axle pin and nut. Take off the blue protective caps from both sides of the tire (note: bearings may fall out). Mount the tire with the valve stem facing outward. Tighten the nut, then loosen it by half a turn backward. Insert the axle pin and attach the wheel axle protective cap.
- Attach the Framework Beam: Stand the framework beam upright. Remove the bolt and R pin from the pivot point. Roll the tank into position so the pivot holes on the tank and beam are aligned, and secure with the bolt and R pin. Then, lower the beam.
- Place the Splitting Wedge: Place the splitting wedge onto the beam.
- Mount the Hydraulic Cylinder: Remove screws and cylinder fixing plate on both sides. Mount the hydraulic cylinder, push it fully back, and secure with the fixing plate. Remove the screw from the wedge, connect it to the hydraulic cylinder, and tighten.
- Install Operator Control Valve Lever: Install the operator control valve lever.
- Connect Hydraulic Hoses: Attach the hydraulic return hose to the hydraulic oil filter (on the right side of the machine). Connect the high-pressure hydraulic hose to the pump (the hose is on the engine side). Note: Place a O-ring 10x2.65 on the gear pump's outlet port before connecting the hose. Remove the shipping plug from the gear pump. Using the provided hose clamps, connect one end of the clear oil hose to the pump inlet, and the other end to the hydraulic tank.
- Install Log Catchers: Install the log catchers on both sides of the beam using the provided hardware.
- Add Fluids: Open the hydraulic oil tank cap and fill with recommended hydraulic fluid (ISO 32/46/68AW Hydraulic Oil, 2.5 Gallons / 9.45 L). Add engine oil and gasoline to the engine. Now the installation is completed.
Operating Instructions
Your BILT HARD log splitter is designed for efficient and safe wood splitting. Understand its features for optimal performance.
Key Features for Operation
- 25-Ton Splitting Force: Powered by an 8 HP 223cc 4-Cycle OHV engine, generating 25 tons of force for dense and knotty logs.
- 17-Second Cycle Time: Fast operation with an automatic cylinder and valve return.
- 8-Inch Hard Steel Wedge: Designed for effective splitting.
- Heavy-Duty Log Catchers: Prevents split logs from rolling off, enhancing safety and efficiency.

Horizontal and Vertical Operation
The log splitter offers versatile operation modes:
- Horizontal Mode: Ideal for standard logs.
- Vertical Mode: Easily switch to vertical position to handle large, heavy, and irregularly shaped logs directly on the ground, reducing physical strain.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your log splitter.
Engine Maintenance
- Oil Level: Check engine oil level before each use. Refer to the engine manual for recommended oil type and change intervals.
- Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug periodically. Replace if worn.

Hydraulic System
- Hydraulic Fluid: Check hydraulic fluid level regularly. Use ISO 32/46/68AW Hydraulic Oil. The large 5-gallon reservoir operates at 8 GPM.
- Filter: The hydraulic system includes a filter designed to resist contamination. Inspect and replace as needed.
- Hoses and Fittings: Inspect all hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks or damage. Tighten or replace as necessary.

General Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the log splitter clean and free of sawdust and debris.
- Storage: Store the log splitter in a dry, protected area when not in use.
- Tires: Maintain proper tire pressure for safe towing and operation.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your log splitter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won't start | No fuel, old fuel, low engine oil, spark plug issue, clogged air filter. | Check fuel level, replace old fuel, add engine oil, inspect/replace spark plug, clean/replace air filter. |
| Loss of splitting force | Low hydraulic fluid, air in hydraulic system, worn pump, relief valve issue. | Check hydraulic fluid level, bleed air from system, inspect pump, consult service manual for relief valve. |
| Log not splitting cleanly | Dull wedge, log too large/hard, improper log placement. | Sharpen wedge, ensure logs are within capacity, position logs correctly. |
| Hydraulic cylinder not extending/retracting | Control valve issue, low hydraulic fluid, hydraulic hose blockage. | Check control valve operation, verify fluid level, inspect hoses for kinks or blockages. |
