1. Introduction

The Apple Magic Keyboard is designed to enhance the functionality of your compatible iPad Air, providing a full-size keyboard, a trackpad, and front and back protection. It connects magnetically and features a floating cantilever design for adjustable viewing angles. This manual provides instructions for setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

2. Setup

2.1 Compatibility

The Magic Keyboard is compatible with the following iPad Air models:

  • iPad Air 11-inch (M2)
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M3)
  • iPad Air (4th Generation)
  • iPad Air (5th Generation)

2.2 Attaching Your iPad Air

  1. Open the Magic Keyboard.
  2. Align your compatible iPad Air with the magnetic back panel of the Magic Keyboard. The iPad will snap into place securely.
  3. Adjust the viewing angle by tilting the iPad. The cantilever design allows for smooth adjustments.

2.3 Initial Connection

The Magic Keyboard connects to your iPad Air via the Smart Connector. No pairing or charging of the keyboard is required separately. Once attached, the keyboard and trackpad will be immediately functional.

3. Operating the Magic Keyboard

3.1 Keyboard Functions

The Magic Keyboard features a full 14-key function row, providing quick access to common iPad functions. These include:

  • Escape (Esc) key: Typically used for canceling actions or exiting modes.
  • Brightness controls: Adjust screen brightness.
  • Media controls: Play/pause, skip tracks.
  • Volume controls: Adjust audio output.
  • Search key: Activate iPadOS search.
  • Dictation key: Initiate voice input.

3.2 Trackpad Usage

The integrated trackpad supports multi-touch gestures, allowing for precise navigation and interaction with iPadOS. Common gestures include:

  • Click: Press down on the trackpad.
  • Scroll: Use two fingers to swipe up or down.
  • Zoom: Pinch with two fingers.
  • Swipe between apps: Use three fingers to swipe left or right.
  • Go to Home Screen: Swipe up with three fingers.

3.3 Charging

The Magic Keyboard features a USB-C port on its hinge for pass-through charging. This allows you to charge your iPad Air through the keyboard, freeing up the iPad's own USB-C port for other accessories. Connect a USB-C power adapter to the port on the Magic Keyboard.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

To clean your Magic Keyboard:

  • Disconnect your iPad Air from the keyboard.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water, to wipe the exterior surfaces.
  • Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide to clean the Magic Keyboard.

4.2 Storage and Protection

When not in use, fold the Magic Keyboard to protect both the keyboard and your iPad Air. The design provides front and back protection for the iPad.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Keyboard or Trackpad Not Responding

  • Ensure your iPad Air is correctly seated and securely attached to the Magic Keyboard.
  • Remove and reattach your iPad Air to reset the Smart Connector connection.
  • Restart your iPad Air.
  • Ensure your iPad Air's software is up to date. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Clean the Smart Connector on both the iPad Air and the Magic Keyboard with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

5.2 Charging Issues

  • Verify that the USB-C cable and power adapter are functioning correctly and are securely connected to the Magic Keyboard's USB-C port.
  • Try charging your iPad Air directly using its own USB-C port to rule out an issue with the iPad itself.

5.3 Physical Damage

If the Magic Keyboard sustains physical damage, discontinue use and contact Apple Support for assistance.
