3. Setup

3.1 Charging the Keyboard

The Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad features a rechargeable internal battery. Before initial use, or when the battery is low, charge the keyboard using the provided Lightning to USB Cable.

  1. Connect the Lightning end of the cable to the Lightning port on the back edge of the keyboard.
  2. Connect the USB end of the cable to a USB port on your Mac or a USB power adapter (sold separately).

A full charge typically provides power for approximately one month or more, depending on usage.

3.2 Pairing with Your Device

The Magic Keyboard connects wirelessly via Bluetooth.

  1. Ensure the keyboard is charged and turned on. The power switch is located on the back edge of the keyboard.
  2. For initial pairing with a Mac, connect the keyboard to your Mac using the Lightning to USB Cable. This will automatically pair the devices.
  3. Once paired, you can disconnect the cable for wireless use.
  4. To pair with an iPad or iPhone, or to re-pair with a Mac wirelessly:
    • Go to System Settings (macOS) or Settings (iOS/iPadOS) on your device.
    • Select Bluetooth.
    • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled.
    • Your Magic Keyboard should appear in the list of nearby devices. Select it to connect.

System Requirements: Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.

4. Operating the Keyboard

4.1 Typing Experience

The Magic Keyboard provides a comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout includes document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The integrated numeric keypad is suitable for data entry, spreadsheets, and financial applications.

4.2 Function Keys

The top row of keys includes function keys (F1-F12) that provide quick access to various system features, such as screen brightness, Mission Control, media playback, and volume control.

  • Brightness Control: F1 (decrease), F2 (increase)
  • Mission Control: F3
  • Launchpad: F4
  • Keyboard Backlight: F5 (decrease), F6 (increase) - Note: This model does not support keyboard backlighting.
  • Media Controls: F7 (previous track), F8 (play/pause), F9 (next track)
  • Volume Control: F10 (mute), F11 (decrease), F12 (increase)

To use the standard function keys (F1, F2, etc.) instead of the special features, hold down the Fn key while pressing the desired function key. You can also change this behavior in System Settings (Keyboard preferences) on your Mac.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Keyboard

To clean your Magic Keyboard, first turn it off. Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Avoid excessive moisture and do not spray cleaners directly onto the keyboard.

5.2 Battery Management

The keyboard's internal battery is designed for long-lasting performance. Recharge the keyboard when the battery indicator light (located near the Lightning port) shows low power, or when you receive a notification on your connected device. Regular charging helps maintain battery health.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Keyboard Not Connecting

  • Check Power: Ensure the keyboard is turned on and has sufficient battery charge.
  • Bluetooth On: Verify that Bluetooth is enabled on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
  • Re-pair: If the keyboard was previously paired but isn't connecting, try connecting it to your Mac with the Lightning to USB Cable to force a re-pair. For iPad/iPhone, go to Bluetooth settings, forget the device, and then re-pair.
  • Interference: Move the keyboard closer to your device and away from potential sources of wireless interference (e.g., Wi-Fi routers, other Bluetooth devices).

6.2 Keys Not Responding

  • Restart: Turn the keyboard off and then on again.
  • Recharge: A very low battery might cause intermittent key responses. Charge the keyboard.
  • Clean: Ensure no debris is lodged under the keys.

6.3 Numeric Keypad Issues

  • Num Lock: Ensure the Num Lock key (if present and active on your system) is not inadvertently toggled. On macOS, the numeric keypad typically functions without a dedicated Num Lock state.
  • Application Specific: Verify that the application you are using supports numeric keypad input.
