4. Operating Instructions
4.1. Operating the BCA Link 2.0 Radio
- Communication: Use the Smart Mic for clear, real-time communication with your group. The mic is designed to be easily accessible, often clipped to a backpack strap or jacket.
- Channel Matching: Ensure all members of your group are on the same FRS channel and sub-channel for effective communication. The Link 2.0 is compatible with standard FRS and GMRS radios on shared FRS frequencies.
- Range Considerations: The radio offers a line-of-sight range of up to 40 miles (64 km) and a terrain range of 0.5 to 6 miles (0.8 to 9.7 km), depending on obstacles and conditions.

4.2. Operating the BCA Tracker S Avalanche Transceiver
- Transmit Mode ('TR'): When traveling in avalanche terrain, always ensure your Tracker S is in 'TR' (Transmit) mode. This allows your signal to be detected by other transceivers in case of an avalanche.
- Search Mode ('SE'): In the event of an avalanche, switch your transceiver to 'SE' (Search) mode. The real-time display will show distance and direction to a buried transceiver, guiding you to the victim.
- Multiple Burials: The Tracker S provides an instantaneous display, which is crucial for efficient searching, especially in scenarios with multiple buried individuals.
5. Maintenance
- Durability: Both the Link 2.0 radio and Tracker S transceiver are built for rugged backcountry use. The Link 2.0 is waterproof to IP56 standards, offering protection against dust and strong jets of water.
- Battery Care: For the Link 2.0, ensure regular charging. The integrated lithium-ion battery provides approximately 8 hours of normal use and up to 40 hours maximum. For the Tracker S, replace AAA batteries as needed, especially before extended trips. Always carry spare batteries.
- Cleaning: Clean the units with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Storage: Store units in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove batteries from the Tracker S if storing for long periods.
6. Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure the Link 2.0 radio is charged. For the Tracker S, check that batteries are correctly inserted and have sufficient charge.
- Communication Issues (Link 2.0): Verify that all radios in your group are on the same channel and sub-channel. Check for obstructions or extreme range.
- Transceiver Not Detecting (Tracker S): Ensure the Tracker S is in 'SE' (Search) mode. Confirm the buried transceiver is transmitting. Check for potential interference from other electronic devices.
- Unusual Behavior: If either device exhibits unexpected behavior, try turning it off and on again. If issues persist, contact BCA customer support.
