BCA
Simplicity is fast. Practice is faster.
2021-2022
Introduction
Since 1994, Backcountry Access (BCA) has been focused on saving lives through reliable, easy-to-use products and consumer education. By keeping operations simple under stress, users increase their chances of a successful live recovery. Even the most intuitive device requires training and practice, including shovels.
In 2021, BCA launched a new line of avalanche shovels, the Dozers, named after their original D-2 "Dozer" shovel, the first designed specifically for "strategic shoveling." These shovels are strong, light, and user-friendly. The difference between a Dozer and another shovel is negligible compared to the difference between a random shoveler and a "strategic" shoveler. Learning to chop and paddle, allocate manpower, and move debris efficiently can save valuable minutes and potentially lives.
BCA is the best-selling backcountry brand in North America due to its simplicity, but success also relies on user learning and practice.

Float Avalanche Airbags
STAY AFLOAT.
The Float avalanche airbag system is tested and proven to reduce trauma and keep users on the surface during an avalanche. The cylinder is half the size of other compressed air systems and fits in the same compartment as the airbag, reducing weight and freeing up space in the main compartment.
Note: The Float 2.0 system is not compatible with Float 1.0 cylinders (and vice versa). Patent: #7,878,141. Cylinders are sold separately.

Stealth Avalanche Probes
EVERY SECOND COUNTS.
BCA's updated probes feature dual-sized depth markings that are easy to see during a rescue or snow profile logging. Pro-level aluminum models are laser-etched to prevent wear. The Stealth Quick-Lock hardware creates a smaller bundle when folded and eliminates loose cables that can whip the user in the face during probing.

Depth measurements are shown in two sizes: 5 cm increments on one side (for rescue) and 1 cm increments on the other side (for snow study). Key depths are highlighted in orange.

Dozer Avalanche Shovels
DIG LIKE A MACHINE.
BCA's new ovo-concave shaft, low-profile stompable blades, and wide range of cored-out handles make BCA shovels stronger, lighter, and more packable than ever before. This line is inspired by the legendary D-2 EXT "Dozer" shovel.
BCA pioneered the avalanche shovel with a non-round shaft to prevent breakage during prying. The design features a concave radius on both sides for increased strength without added weight. Tightly toleranced "variable offset" sliding surfaces between the inner and outer walls of the extendable shaft prevent ice buildup for reliable deployment.
In hard-slab avalanches and deep burials, avalanche debris can be difficult to penetrate. The flat "stomp edge" on the top of the blade, combined with heat-treated 6061 aluminum, allows penetration by adding body weight. Auto-engaging spring pins at the blade/shaft connection enable faster, hands-free assembly/deployment.
BCA shovel blades lay flat in packs with no protruding ferrule or "neck," maximizing space for other essentials. The front third of all blades offers a smooth surface for clean snowpit walls during snow stability tests. All BCA extendable models meet the UIAA standard for avalanche rescue shovels.

Educational Resources
EDUCATION + GEAR = SAVED LIVES
At BCA, the company sees itself as educators as much as manufacturers. The website offers extensive educational content alongside products. The "Learn" pages feature downloadable instructional videos on "backcountry basics" and companion rescue. Resources also include a library of published research papers and "Success Stories" celebrating airbag deployments, transceiver searches, and decision-making victories (#sendandreturn).
The six-part "Send and Return" video series showcases BCA athletes demonstrating safe backcountry practices, adhering to avalanche conditions and training. All BCA athletes are required to have level 1 avalanche training.
The updated BCA app allows users to check avalanche bulletins, measure slope angle/aspect/elevation, and locate BCA retailers and Float cylinder refill and exchange centers. Search for "BCA Backcountry Access" on iPhone or Android.
While BCA aims to save lives with its reliable and easy-to-use avalanche gear, the company hopes users will never need to use it except for practice.
