Installation Instructions

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate the water supply valve at the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise until the water flow stops completely.
  2. Drain Toilet Tank: Flush the toilet to empty the tank. Hold the flush lever down to ensure as much water as possible drains out. Use a sponge or towel to remove any remaining water from the tank.
  3. Disconnect Water Supply Line: Unscrew the water supply line from the bottom of the old fill valve. Have a small bucket or towel ready to catch any residual water.
  4. Remove Old Fill Valve: Locate the lock nut on the underside of the toilet tank, securing the old fill valve. Unscrew this nut. Carefully lift the old fill valve out of the tank.
  5. Prepare New Fill Valve: Ensure the shank washer is properly seated on the threaded base of the new Universal Fill Valve.
  6. Install New Fill Valve: Insert the new fill valve into the hole at the bottom of the toilet tank. From the underside of the tank, thread the lock nut onto the valve shank and hand-tighten it securely. Do not overtighten.
  7. Connect Refill Tube: Attach one end of the refill tube to the small port on the top of the fill valve. Secure the other end of the refill tube to the overflow pipe using the refill clip. Ensure the tube is positioned so water flows into the overflow pipe.
  8. Reconnect Water Supply Line: Reconnect the water supply line to the threaded base of the new fill valve. Hand-tighten, then use a wrench to tighten an additional quarter turn. Do not overtighten.
  9. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to restore water flow to the toilet tank. Allow the tank to fill.
  10. Check for Leaks: Inspect all connections for any signs of leaks. If leaks are present, tighten the connections slightly until they stop.
  11. Adjust Water Level: The fill valve is height-adjustable. To adjust the water level in the tank, locate the adjustment screw or mechanism on the valve. Turn it to raise or lower the float, setting the water level to the manufacturer's recommended line, typically marked inside the tank or on the bowl.

Operation

The Gerber Universal Fill Valve operates automatically to refill the toilet tank after each flush. When the toilet is flushed, the water level in the tank drops, causing the float mechanism on the fill valve to lower. This opens the valve, allowing fresh water to enter the tank. As the tank fills, the float rises, and once the desired water level is reached, the valve automatically closes, stopping the water flow. The refill tube ensures that a small amount of water is directed into the toilet bowl during the refill cycle, maintaining the proper water seal in the bowl's trap. The anti-siphon design prevents backflow of tank water into your fresh water supply.

Maintenance

The Gerber Universal Fill Valve is designed for consistent and maintenance-free operation due to its unique self-cleaning mechanism. However, periodic inspection can help ensure optimal performance.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Toilet runs continuously or cycles on and off.Water level is too high, flapper is leaking, or fill valve is faulty.Adjust water level (lower the float). Check flapper for proper seal and replace if worn. If problem persists, the fill valve may need replacement.
Toilet fills slowly or not at all.Water supply valve is partially closed, or fill valve is clogged.Ensure water supply valve is fully open. Turn off water, remove fill valve, and check for debris or mineral buildup. Clean if necessary.
Water leaks from base of toilet.Loose connections or damaged shank washer.Tighten lock nut and water supply line connection. Inspect shank washer for damage and replace if needed.
Loud noise during fill cycle.High water pressure or debris in valve.Check water pressure. Clean fill valve for any obstructions.
