VEVOR YHEO-1
VEVOR Essential Oil Distillation Kit User Manual
Model: YHEO-1
1. Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of your VEVOR Essential Oil Distillation Kit (Model YHEO-1). This 2000ml distillation apparatus is designed for efficient essential oil extraction and purification, featuring 3.3 borosilicate lab glassware and a 1000W heating plate. Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use to ensure proper setup and to maximize the lifespan and performance of your equipment.
2. Safety Precautions
Operating laboratory equipment requires adherence to strict safety guidelines. Failure to follow these precautions may result in injury or damage to the equipment.
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, when handling glassware and chemicals.
- Ensure the distillation apparatus is assembled correctly and securely clamped to the laboratory stand before heating.
- Handle all glassware with care. Although made of durable 3.3 borosilicate glass, it can break if dropped or subjected to sudden temperature changes (thermal shock).
- The heating plate generates high temperatures. Avoid direct contact with the heating surface and the hot flask during and immediately after operation.
- Ensure adequate ventilation in your workspace to dissipate any fumes or vapors.
- Never heat a sealed system. Ensure there is an open path for vapor to escape to prevent pressure buildup.
- Always monitor the distillation process. Do not leave the apparatus unattended while in operation.
- Keep flammable materials away from the heating area.
- Disconnect the heating plate from the power source when not in use or during assembly/disassembly.

4. Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps to assemble your distillation apparatus. Refer to the component diagram in Section 3 for visual guidance.

Image: The fully assembled VEVOR Essential Oil Distillation Kit, showing the heating plate, flasks, condenser, and support stand.
- Set up the Laboratory Stand: Place the 60cm laboratory stand (22) on a stable, level surface.
- Position the Heating Plate: Place the 1000W heating plate (19) on the base of the stand.
- Mount the Boiling Flask: Secure the 2000ml 24/40 Two-Neck Flat Bottom Flask (1) above the heating plate using a retort ring (18) and a flask clamp (21) attached to the stand with cross clamps (17). Ensure it is stable and centered on the heating plate.
- Attach the Matching Flask: Connect the 2000ml Matching Flask (2) to the top neck of the boiling flask (1) using a 24/40 ground glass joint. Apply a thin layer of vacuum grease (16) to the ground glass joints for an airtight seal, then secure with plastic clamps (12). This flask will hold the plant material for steam distillation.
- Install the Delivery Tube: Connect the Delivery Tube (3) from the side neck of the matching flask (2) to the top inlet of the Snake-Shaped Condenser (4). Secure with plastic clamps (12) and vacuum grease.
- Mount the Condenser: Secure the Snake-Shaped Condenser (4) to the laboratory stand using a burette clamp (20) and cross clamps (17). Ensure it is vertically aligned and stable.
- Connect Water Tubing: Attach the 2m latex tubing (13) to the inlet and outlet ports of the condenser (4). The lower port is typically the water inlet, and the upper port is the water outlet. Connect the inlet to a cold water source (e.g., a circulating water pump or tap) and the outlet to a drain or collection bucket. Note: A separate water pump is required for continuous cooling and is not included in this kit.
- Insert Thermometer: Insert the thermometer (5) into the remaining neck of the matching flask (2) using the thermometer stopper (14). Ensure the thermometer bulb is positioned to accurately measure the vapor temperature.
- Position Collection Flask: Place the 150ml Conical Flask (6) or 150ml Beaker (7) at the outlet of the condenser (4) to collect the distillate.
- Optional: Separatory Funnel Setup: If using the 100ml Separatory Funnel (8) for later separation, ensure it is clean and ready for use.

5. Operating Instructions (Essential Oil Distillation)
This section outlines the general procedure for steam distillation of essential oils.

Image: The distillation apparatus in operation, showing plant material (rose petals) in the upper flask and liquid boiling in the lower flask, illustrating the steam distillation process.
- Prepare Materials:
- Ensure all glassware is clean and dry.
- Fill the 2000ml flat bottom flask (1) with distilled water, typically about half to two-thirds full.
- Carefully place your plant material (e.g., lavender, rose petals) into the 2000ml matching flask (2). Ensure the material is loosely packed to allow steam to pass through. Note: The opening for adding plant material can be narrow; consider breaking down larger pieces.
- Verify Connections: Double-check all ground glass joints and clamps to ensure they are secure and airtight. Ensure the condenser tubing is properly connected to a cold water source and drain.
- Start Water Flow: Begin circulating cold water through the condenser (4). This is crucial for efficient condensation of the vapor.
- Apply Heat: Plug in the 1000W heating plate (19) and set it to the desired temperature. Gradually increase the heat to bring the water in the boiling flask (1) to a gentle boil.
- Important Note on Heating: The included 1000W heating plate may require extended time to reach and maintain boiling temperatures, especially for the 2000ml flask. Some users find a stronger heating source (e.g., 1500W or higher) more efficient for rapid boiling. If boiling is slow, consider preheating the water or using an alternative heat source if available and safe.
- Monitor Distillation: As the water boils, steam will rise into the matching flask (2), pass through the plant material, carrying the essential oil vapor with it. The mixed vapor will then travel to the condenser (4).
- Collect Distillate: In the condenser, the vapor will cool and condense back into liquid (a mixture of essential oil and hydrosol), which will drip into your collection flask (6 or 7).
- Separate Oil: Once distillation is complete (indicated by a significant decrease in distillate production or clear distillate), turn off the heating plate and allow the apparatus to cool. Transfer the collected distillate to the separatory funnel (8). Allow the oil and water layers to separate, then carefully drain the hydrosol, leaving the essential oil.
- Store Essential Oil: Transfer the separated essential oil into the amber bottles (11) for storage. Store in a cool, dark place.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your distillation kit.
- Cleaning Glassware: After each use, thoroughly clean all glassware with appropriate laboratory detergent and the provided bottle brush (9). Rinse with distilled water and allow to air dry completely before storage.
- Inspect Glassware: Regularly inspect all glass components for chips, cracks, or damage. Do not use damaged glassware as it can pose a safety hazard.
- Heating Plate Care: Wipe down the heating plate with a damp cloth after it has cooled completely. Do not immerse the heating plate in water.
- Storage: Store all components in a clean, dry, and safe place to prevent breakage or contamination.
7. Troubleshooting
