Orbit 57869 Battery-Powered Sprinkler Controller Add-On Solenoid with Valve Adapters Instruction Manual

1. Introduction and Product Overview

The Orbit 57869 Battery-Powered Sprinkler Controller Add-On Solenoid with Valve Adapters is designed to convert existing manual sprinkler or drip valves into automatic valves, or to provide control where traditional sprinkler wires are not available or are damaged. This unit allows for battery-powered operation of up to four automatic sprinkler or drip valves when paired with a compatible battery-powered sprinkler controller (sold separately). It is engineered for outdoor use and includes one 13V latching solenoid and various valve adapters.

3. Safety Information

  • For outdoor irrigation use with cold water only.
  • Ensure all connections are secure to prevent leaks.
  • Do not overtighten valve adapters during installation, as this may cause damage.
  • Keep batteries out of reach of children. Dispose of used batteries responsibly.

4. Installation

Installation of the Orbit 57869 solenoid is designed to be straightforward. This solenoid is intended to replace a standard 24 VAC solenoid on an existing sprinkler valve, allowing it to be controlled by a compatible battery-powered timer.

  1. Prepare the Valve Box: Locate the existing sprinkler valve in your valve box. Ensure the main water supply to the irrigation system is turned off before proceeding.
  2. Remove Existing Solenoid: Carefully unscrew and remove the existing 24 VAC solenoid from the sprinkler valve. Disconnect any wires attached to it.
  3. Install 13V Latching Solenoid: Select the appropriate valve adapter for your specific valve brand. Thread the 13V latching solenoid onto the valve, using the chosen adapter if necessary. Hand-tighten until snug. Do not overtighten.
  4. Connect to Battery-Powered Timer: Connect the wires from the 13V latching solenoid to the corresponding terminals on your compatible Orbit battery-powered sprinkler timer (e.g., Orbit 57865). Refer to your timer's manual for specific wiring instructions.
  5. Insert Batteries into Timer: Install 2 AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment of your compatible battery-powered sprinkler timer. Ensure correct polarity.
  6. Mount the Timer: Place the mounting clip and timer securely onto the latching solenoid. This ensures the timer is positioned correctly within the valve box for optimal performance and protection.
  7. Restore Water Supply: Once all connections are secure and the timer is mounted, slowly turn the main water supply back on. Check for any leaks.

5. Operating Instructions (with Compatible Timer)

The Orbit 57869 solenoid operates in conjunction with a compatible battery-powered sprinkler controller. The following outlines general operational features typically found on such controllers:

  • Setting Watering Schedules (A and B Programs): Compatible timers usually feature 'A' and 'B' program slots, allowing you to set up to two distinct watering schedules. This is useful for different zones or plant types requiring varied watering frequencies and durations.
  • Multiple Start Times: Each program typically supports up to four different start times. This enables the creation of 'cycle and soak' windows, promoting better water infiltration into the soil and reducing runoff. The timer will automatically stack overlapping runtimes to ensure only one solenoid operates at a time.
  • Manual Run Feature: For immediate watering or testing, use the manual run feature. This allows you to activate one zone, selected zones, or all zones for a specified duration, independent of the programmed schedule.
  • Rain Delay: The rain delay function allows you to temporarily pause watering for a configurable period (e.g., 24, 48, or 72 hours) after rainfall, conserving water and preventing overwatering.

6. Maintenance

  • Battery Replacement: Under normal usage, the 2 AA alkaline batteries in the compatible controller should power the unit for a full season. Replace batteries annually or when the low battery indicator appears on the controller. Always use fresh alkaline batteries.
  • Inspect for Leaks: Periodically check the solenoid and valve connections for any signs of leaks. Tighten connections if necessary, but avoid overtightening.
  • Clean Valve Box: Keep the valve box clear of debris, dirt, and standing water to ensure proper operation and longevity of the solenoid and controller.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Valve does not open or closeLow or dead batteries in the controller; loose wiring connection; solenoid malfunction; water pressure issues.Replace batteries in the controller. Check wire connections between the solenoid and controller. Ensure the solenoid is properly seated and hand-tightened. Verify water supply pressure.
Water leak at solenoid connectionSolenoid or adapter not properly seated; damaged O-ring or adapter; overtightening during installation.Ensure the solenoid and adapter are correctly threaded and hand-tightened. Inspect O-rings and adapters for damage; replace if necessary. Avoid overtightening during installation.
Controller not respondingDead batteries; controller malfunction.Replace batteries. If the issue persists, consult the compatible controller's manual or Orbit customer support.
