1. Setup
The Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watch is powered by an automatic mechanical movement (Caliber 8210), meaning it does not require a battery. It is powered by the natural motion of your arm winding a spring.

Figure 1: Front view of the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watch.
Initial Winding and Time Setting:
- To start the watch, gently shake it from side to side for about 30 seconds to initiate the automatic winding mechanism. Alternatively, you can manually wind the watch by rotating the crown clockwise in position 0 (fully pushed in) approximately 40 times.
- To set the time, pull the crown out to position 2. Rotate the crown to move the hands clockwise until the correct time is displayed. Push the crown back to position 0 to start the watch.
- To set the date, pull the crown out to position 1. Rotate the crown counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM, as this can damage the movement. Once the date is set, push the crown back to position 0.
Bracelet Adjustment:
The watch features a seamlessly integrated stainless steel bracelet with a Push Button Foldover Clasp With Safety. For optimal comfort and to ensure proper function of the automatic movement, the bracelet should fit snugly but not too tightly on your wrist. Adjustments to the bracelet size typically require the removal or addition of links by a qualified watch technician. The bracelet also offers shrunken links to assist with minor adjustments.
2. Operating the Watch
Your Citizen Tsuyosa watch is designed for daily wear and features robust construction for reliability.

Automatic Movement:
The Caliber 8210 is a 3-hand automatic movement. It is powered by the release of a wound spring, which is automatically wound by an oscillating weight with the motion of the wearer's arm. Mechanical movements do not require a battery. If the watch is not worn for an extended period, the power reserve will deplete, and the watch will stop. Simply re-wind it as described in the Setup section.
Water Resistance:
This timepiece is water-resistant up to 5 bar (50 meters or 166 feet). This rating is suitable for still-water swimming and showering. It is not recommended for diving, snorkeling, or high-impact water sports. Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in before any contact with water.
Sapphire Crystal:
The watch features a scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Sapphire is extremely hard and resistant to scratches from everyday use, maintaining clarity and readability of the dial.
3. Maintenance
Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your Citizen Tsuyosa watch.
General Care:
- Wipe the watch regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and smudges.
- For the stainless steel case and bracelet, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures (hot or cold) or sudden temperature changes.
- Protect the watch from strong impacts or shocks, which can affect the delicate mechanical movement.
Water Resistance Precautions:
- Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in before the watch comes into contact with water.
- Do not operate the crown or push-buttons while the watch is wet or submerged.
- If the watch is exposed to saltwater, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water and dry it immediately.
- Water resistance is not a permanent condition and may eventually be compromised by aging gaskets or accidental shocks to the crown or case. It is recommended to have the water resistance checked periodically by a Citizen service center.
Servicing:
Like all mechanical watches, your Tsuyosa watch benefits from periodic servicing to maintain its accuracy and performance. Citizen recommends regular servicing, typically every 3-5 years, by an authorized Citizen service center.
4. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your watch, try the following basic troubleshooting steps before seeking professional assistance.
Watch Stops or Loses Time:
- Insufficient Winding: As an automatic watch, it needs sufficient wrist movement to stay wound. If you have a sedentary lifestyle, or if the watch has been unworn for more than 60 hours (its power reserve), it may stop. Manually wind the watch by rotating the crown clockwise approximately 40 times.
- Magnetic Fields: Exposure to strong magnetic fields (e.g., from speakers, refrigerators, or certain electronic devices) can affect the accuracy of mechanical watches. If you suspect this, keep the watch away from such sources. A watchmaker can demagnetize it if necessary.
Date Not Changing Correctly:
- Ensure you are not attempting to set the date between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM, as this is when the date change mechanism is engaged and can be damaged by manual adjustment.
- Verify the crown is pulled out to position 1 for date adjustment.
Condensation Under Crystal:
- Small amounts of condensation that disappear quickly are usually not a concern.
- If significant condensation persists, it indicates a loss of water resistance. Stop using the watch immediately and take it to an authorized service center to prevent further damage.
