4. Setup
To begin using the Topdiag P60, follow these steps:
- Connect Power: Attach the red alligator clip to the positive (+) terminal of the vehicle's battery and the black alligator clip to the negative (-) terminal or a good chassis ground.
- Power On: The device will power on automatically once connected to a 6-30V power source. The LCD display will illuminate.
- Self-Test: Before performing any tests, ensure the tool is functioning correctly by performing a quick self-test. This typically involves touching the probe to the positive and negative terminals to confirm voltage readings.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Voltage Test
The P60 can measure DC voltage in the range of 0.3V to 70V. Simply touch the probe tip to the circuit or component you wish to test. The voltage reading will be displayed on the LCD screen.

Figure 5.1.1: LCD display functionality. This image demonstrates how the LCD backlight changes color (red for positive, white for diode, green for negative) based on the detected voltage or component type, displaying values like 12.5V, 0V, and 2.7V.

Figure 5.1.2: Voltage measurement range. This composite image shows the P60 being used to measure voltage on different parts of a vehicle's electrical system, including battery terminals and engine components, demonstrating its 0.3-70V measurement capability.
5.2 Component Activation
This function allows you to activate components by supplying power or ground directly from the P60. This is useful for testing motors, lights, relays, and other electrical components without using the vehicle's wiring.
- Connect the P60 to the vehicle's battery.
- Touch the probe tip to the positive terminal of the component you wish to activate.
- Press the appropriate activation button (usually marked '+' or '-') on the P60 to supply positive or negative voltage to the component.
- Observe if the component activates as expected.

Figure 5.2.1: Component activation. The image shows the P60 connected to a vehicle battery and its probe tip activating a component, with examples of activated components like fuel pumps, solenoids, blowers, cooling fans, and headlights.
5.3 Short Circuit Location
The P60 can help trace and locate short circuits. By applying a controlled voltage and observing the current draw or voltage drop, you can pinpoint the location of a short.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before testing.
- Connect the P60 to the vehicle's battery.
- Apply power to the suspected shorted circuit using the P60's activation function.
- Follow the circuit path, observing for changes in voltage or current readings on the P60, which can indicate the short's location.
5.4 Diode Detection
The P60 can test diodes for proper function. When the probe detects a good diode, the upper left corner of the LCD will display a diode symbol, and the backlight will show white, along with a voltage reading.

Figure 5.4.1: Diode identification. This image shows the P60 probe connected to a diode, with the LCD displaying the diode symbol and voltage, indicating effortless and precise diode testing.
5.5 Grounding Test
To test for a good ground connection, touch the probe tip to a known good ground point. The P60 will indicate a ground connection, often by displaying 0V and a specific backlight color (e.g., green).
5.6 Jump Lead Function
The P60 can act as a jump lead, allowing you to quickly provide power or ground to a component for testing purposes. This is similar to component activation but emphasizes the direct power delivery aspect.
5.7 Continuity Test
To perform a continuity test, connect the P60 to the vehicle's battery. Touch the probe tip to one end of the circuit or component, and then touch the other end to a known good ground or power source (depending on the circuit). The P60 will indicate continuity, often with an audible tone or a specific display reading.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Topdiag P60:
- Cleaning: Wipe the tool with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the P60 in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Probe Tip: Keep the probe tip sharp and clean for optimal contact.
- Cable Inspection: Regularly inspect the power cable and alligator clips for any signs of damage or wear.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Topdiag P60, consider the following:
- No Power/Display:
- Check the connection of the alligator clips to the vehicle battery. Ensure they are securely attached to the correct terminals.
- Verify the vehicle battery voltage is within the 6-30V operating range.
- Inspect the power cable for any breaks or damage.
- Inaccurate Readings:
- Ensure the probe tip is making good contact with the test point.
- Clean the probe tip if it appears dirty or corroded.
- Confirm the vehicle's electrical system is stable and not experiencing intermittent issues.
- Component Not Activating:
- Check the component itself for faults.
- Ensure the P60 is providing sufficient current for the component (Activation Current: 0-8A).
- Verify the correct polarity is being applied to the component.
