VIHELM GDS2000 Underground Metal Detector User Manual

Model: GDS2000

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the assembly, operation, and maintenance of your VIHELM GDS2000 Underground Metal Detector. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure safe and optimal performance. The GDS2000 is designed for high-precision detection of various metals, including gold, silver, and iron, suitable for both beginners and experienced users.

Safety Information

  • Always operate the metal detector in well-ventilated areas.
  • Avoid using the detector near power lines or underground cables to prevent electric shock.
  • Do not expose the control unit to extreme temperatures or moisture. The search coil is waterproof (IP65 rated), but the control unit is not.
  • Use only recommended batteries (6 x AA or 2 x 9V). Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.
  • Exercise caution when digging to avoid injury or damage to property. Always obtain permission before searching on private land.
  • Keep the device out of reach of children.

Assembly and Setup

Follow these steps to assemble your metal detector:

  1. Attach the Search Coil: Secure the desired search coil (5"x10" DD or 5" DD) to the lower stem using the provided bolt and washers. Ensure it is firmly attached but can still be adjusted for angle.
  2. Connect the Stems: Insert the lower stem into the upper stem, and then connect the upper stem to the control unit. Adjust the length of the stem to a comfortable height for operation.
  3. Secure the Armrest: Position the armrest for comfortable support during use.
  4. Connect the Coil Cable: Wrap the search coil cable around the stem, ensuring it is not too tight or loose, and plug the connector into the corresponding port on the control unit. Tighten the collar to secure the connection.
  5. Install Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the control unit. Insert 6 x AA batteries or 2 x 9V batteries, observing the correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
  6. Connect Headphones: Plug the wired headphones into the 3.5mm (1/8") audio output jack on the control unit.

Control Panel Overview

  • LCD Display: Shows target ID (1-100), sensitivity level (1-99), volume level (1-10), battery status, and current search mode. The blue LED backlight assists in low-light conditions.
  • Sensitivity Buttons: Use the '+' and '-' buttons to adjust the detector's sensitivity. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals.
  • Volume Buttons: Adjust the audio output level for the built-in speaker or connected headphones.
  • Mode Button: Cycles through the available search modes.
  • Discrimination/Iron Exclusion Button: Activates or adjusts the metal discrimination feature to ignore unwanted metals like iron.
  • Pinpoint Button: Engages the precision positioning mode for accurate target location.

Ground Balance

The GDS2000 features manual ground balance. This setting helps the detector ignore ground mineralization, which can cause false signals. Refer to the on-screen prompts or specific instructions for adjusting ground balance in your search area to optimize performance.

Modes of Operation

The VIHELM GDS2000 offers multiple search modes to optimize your treasure hunting experience:

  • All Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal without discrimination. This mode offers the deepest detection and is ideal for initial sweeps or when searching for all metal targets.
  • Metal Discrimination Mode: Allows the user to ignore specific types of unwanted metals, such as iron. This helps focus on more valuable targets like gold, silver, and copper. Adjust the discrimination level using the dedicated button.
  • Precision Positioning Mode (Pinpoint): Once a target is detected, activate this mode to precisely locate the target's position in the ground. This helps in minimizing the size of the excavation.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth. Ensure the control unit remains dry. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Care: Always remove batteries if the detector will not be used for more than a week. Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
  • Storage: Store the metal detector in a dry, secure location, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. If disassembling for storage, ensure all components are clean and dry.
  • Cable Inspection: Periodically check all cables and connections for signs of wear or damage.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No powerDead or incorrectly installed batteriesReplace batteries or ensure correct polarity.
False signals / erratic behaviorHigh sensitivity, ground mineralization, electromagnetic interference, loose coil cableReduce sensitivity, perform ground balance, move away from power lines/electronics, check coil cable connection.
No audio from headphonesHeadphones not plugged in, volume too low, faulty headphonesEnsure headphones are fully plugged in, increase volume, test with another pair of headphones.
Poor detection depthLow sensitivity, incorrect ground balance, small target sizeIncrease sensitivity, re-ground balance, sweep slower.
