1. Introduction
The Generic Ice Breaker Model 350 is an electric pipe thawing machine designed to safely and efficiently thaw frozen metal pipes. This compact and portable unit is intended for use on 1/2 to 1 inch diameter copper or iron pipes, up to 100 feet in length. It operates by connecting heavy-duty cables to both ends of the frozen pipe section, allowing an electrical current to generate heat and melt the ice blockage.

2.1 General Safety Warnings
- Always operate the unit in a dry environment. Do not expose the unit to rain or wet conditions.
- Ensure the work area is well-ventilated.
- Keep children and bystanders away while operating the machine.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including insulated gloves and eye protection.
- Do not operate the machine if the power cord or thawing cables are damaged.
- Never leave the operating machine unattended.
2.2 Electrical Safety
- The unit requires a standard 115V AC outlet. Ensure the outlet is properly grounded.
- Do not use extension cords unless absolutely necessary, and ensure they are rated for the machine's power requirements (2400 watts).
- Always disconnect the power supply before making or breaking cable connections.
- Avoid contact with live electrical parts.
- Do not bypass or modify the circuit breakers on the unit.
2.3 Pipe Thawing Specific Warnings
- This machine is designed for metal pipes only (copper or iron). DO NOT use on plastic pipes, as this can cause severe damage or fire.
- Ensure the pipe section to be thawed is isolated from other electrical systems or grounding points to prevent current diversion.
- Do not connect cables to gas lines or pipes containing flammable liquids.
- Monitor the pipe temperature during thawing to prevent overheating.
- Ensure water pressure is relieved by opening a faucet on the frozen line before and during thawing.
3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove the Ice Breaker Model 350 and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. If any damage is found, do not operate the unit and contact customer support.
3.2 Connecting Thawing Cables
The thawing cables connect to the terminals on the front of the Ice Breaker 350 unit. Ensure the unit is powered off and unplugged before connecting the cables. Securely attach the cable clamps to the designated terminals on the machine. Then, attach the clamps to the metal pipe on either side of the frozen section. Ensure a clean, tight connection to the pipe for optimal conductivity.
3.3 Power Connection
Plug the machine's power cord into a standard 115V AC grounded outlet. Ensure the outlet can handle the machine's 2400-watt power draw. The unit is equipped with internal circuit breakers for protection.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 General Operation
The Ice Breaker Model 350 works by passing a high current through the frozen metal pipe, generating heat to melt the ice. The effectiveness depends on the pipe material, diameter, and length of the frozen section. Always ensure proper setup and safety precautions before beginning operation.
4.2 Thawing a Single Pipe Section
- Locate the frozen section of the pipe.
- Open a faucet on the frozen line to relieve pressure and allow melted ice to escape.
- Connect one thawing cable clamp to the pipe on one side of the frozen section.
- Connect the second thawing cable clamp to the pipe on the other side of the frozen section. Ensure the clamps are securely attached to bare metal.
- Plug in the Ice Breaker 350 and turn on the power switch. The red indicator light will illuminate.
- Monitor the faucet for water flow. Once water begins to flow, the pipe is thawing. Continue operation for a few more minutes to ensure the blockage is fully cleared.
- Turn off the power switch and unplug the unit.
- Disconnect the thawing cables from the pipe.

Figure 2: Connection for thawing a single frozen pipe section. This diagram illustrates the Ice Breaker 350 connected via two cables to a frozen pipe. One clamp is attached to the pipe near an open faucet, and the other to an unfrozen section, with the frozen area between them.
4.3 Thawing a Service Riser
- Locate the service riser and the main valve.
- Connect one thawing cable clamp to the house side of the service riser.
- Connect the second thawing cable clamp to the main valve or curb key.
- Ensure the clamps are securely attached to bare metal.
- Plug in the Ice Breaker 350 and turn on the power switch.
- Monitor for water flow inside the house.
- Turn off the power switch and unplug the unit once thawed.
- Disconnect the thawing cables.

4.4 Thawing Between Two Buildings
- Identify the frozen pipe section running between the two buildings (e.g., house and barn).
- Connect one thawing cable clamp to the pipe connection point at the first building.
- Connect the second thawing cable clamp to the pipe connection point at the second building.
- Ensure the clamps are securely attached to bare metal.
- Plug in the Ice Breaker 350 and turn on the power switch.
- Monitor for water flow at an open faucet in either building.
- Turn off the power switch and unplug the unit once thawed.
- Disconnect the thawing cables.

4.5 Approximate Thawing Times
Thawing times are approximate and can vary based on pipe material, diameter, ambient temperature, and the severity of the freeze.
- 20 feet of 1-inch metal pipe: Approximately 8 minutes
- 40 feet of 1-inch metal pipe (with standard 20ft cables): Approximately 16 minutes
- 100 feet of 1-inch metal pipe (with 50ft cables, not included): Approximately 25 minutes
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Ice Breaker Model 350.
5.1 Cleaning
After each use, wipe down the main unit and cables with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or moisture. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
5.2 Cable Inspection
Periodically inspect the thawing cables and clamps for any signs of wear, cuts, cracks, or damage. Ensure the insulation is intact. Replace damaged cables immediately to prevent electrical hazards.
5.3 Storage
Store the Ice Breaker Model 350 and its cables in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Coil the cables neatly to prevent kinking or damage.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Ice Breaker Model 350, refer to the table below for common problems and solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unit does not power on. | No power from outlet; tripped circuit breaker (unit or household); damaged power cord. | Check outlet with another device. Reset household circuit breaker. Check unit's circuit breakers. Inspect power cord for damage. |
| Pipe is not thawing or thawing slowly. | Poor cable connection; pipe is not metal; frozen section too long/large; insufficient power; current diversion. | Ensure cable clamps are securely attached to bare metal. Verify pipe is copper or iron. Consider thawing shorter sections. Check power supply. Ensure pipe is isolated from other grounds. |
| Circuit breaker on unit trips repeatedly. | Short circuit in cables or connections; excessive load; internal fault. | Inspect cables and connections for damage or shorts. Ensure pipe is not too long or large for the unit's capacity. If problem persists, contact support. |
| Smoke or burning smell. | Overheating; internal fault; improper connection. | Immediately turn off and unplug the unit. Do not operate. Contact customer support. |
