1. Introduction to the Omnipod 5 System Pod
The Omnipod 5 G6/G7 System Pod is a tubeless, wearable insulin delivery device designed for continuous insulin infusion. It works in conjunction with the Omnipod 5 Controller and compatible continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems (Dexcom G6 or G7) to provide automated insulin delivery. This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of the Omnipod 5 Pod.
Important: Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance on diabetes management and Omnipod 5 System usage. Read all instructions carefully before first use.
2. Setup and Activation
Before applying a new Pod, ensure you have a new, unopened Omnipod 5 Pod, a vial of U-100 rapid-acting insulin, and alcohol wipes.
2.1 Preparing the Pod
- Inspect the Pod: Visually check the Pod for any damage or leaks. Do not use if damaged.
- Fill with Insulin: Remove the Pod from its sterile packaging. Locate the fill port on the underside of the Pod. Using a U-100 insulin syringe, slowly inject insulin into the fill port until the Pod is filled with the prescribed amount (up to 200 units). Avoid overfilling.
- Prime the Pod: After filling, the Pod will automatically prime itself. Listen for beeps indicating the priming process is complete.
2.2 Site Selection and Application
Choose an appropriate infusion site on your body, such as the abdomen, upper arm, lower back, or buttocks. Rotate sites with each new Pod application to prevent skin irritation and improve insulin absorption.
- Clean the Site: Clean the chosen site thoroughly with an alcohol wipe and allow it to air dry completely.
- Remove Liner: Peel off the adhesive liner from the back of the Pod.
- Apply the Pod: Firmly press the Pod onto the prepared skin site. Ensure good adhesion.
- Activate the Pod: Follow the on-screen instructions on your Omnipod 5 Controller to activate the new Pod. The cannula will automatically insert.

3. Operating the Omnipod 5 Pod
The Omnipod 5 Pod communicates wirelessly with your Omnipod 5 Controller to manage insulin delivery based on your CGM data and personalized settings.
3.1 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID)
- The Omnipod 5 System continuously adjusts insulin delivery to help keep your glucose levels within your target range.
- The Pod receives glucose readings from your compatible CGM and communicates with the Controller to determine appropriate micro-boluses.
3.2 Manual Bolus Delivery
- You can manually deliver boluses for meals or to correct high glucose levels using the Omnipod 5 Controller.
- The Controller will calculate suggested bolus amounts based on your programmed settings (insulin-to-carb ratio, insulin sensitivity factor, target glucose).
3.3 Pod Life and Replacement
Each Pod is designed for up to 3 days (72 hours) of continuous insulin delivery. Replace the Pod at the end of its wear time or when prompted by the Controller, whichever comes first.
4. Maintenance and Care
Proper care of your Omnipod 5 Pod ensures optimal performance and safety.
- Keep Dry: The Pod is waterproof (IP28 rating for 25 feet for 60 minutes). However, avoid prolonged submersion or exposure to extreme water pressure.
- Site Rotation: Always rotate your infusion site with each new Pod to prevent lipohypertrophy and ensure consistent insulin absorption.
- Adhesion: Ensure the Pod remains securely attached to your skin. If the adhesive loosens, reinforce it with medical tape or replace the Pod if necessary.
- Storage: Store unused Pods at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, as indicated on the packaging.
5. Troubleshooting Common Issues
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Omnipod 5 Pod.
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pod Error Alarm | Internal malfunction, occlusion, or low insulin. | Check the Controller for specific error messages. If persistent, deactivate and replace the Pod. Contact support if errors continue. |
| Occlusion Alarm | Insulin flow is blocked (e.g., kinked cannula, air bubble). | Deactivate and replace the Pod immediately. Check the infusion site for redness or swelling. |
| Poor Adhesion | Oily skin, improper application, excessive sweating. | Ensure skin is clean and dry before application. Use an adhesive prep wipe if needed. Reinforce with medical tape or replace Pod. |
| Insulin Leakage | Improper Pod filling, damaged Pod, or cannula dislodgement. | Check fill port for damage. If leakage persists, deactivate and replace the Pod. Monitor blood glucose closely. |
If you experience any issues not listed here or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact Omnipod Customer Support or your healthcare provider.
