Site Selection
The Omnipod offers flexibility in placement due to its tubeless design. It can be worn in most areas where an injection is typically given. Key considerations for site selection include:
- Avoid areas that may cause discomfort or dislodgement during movement, such as under waistbands or skin folds.
- Rotate application sites with each new Pod to ensure optimal insulin absorption.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 1 inch from previous sites, 2 inches from the navel, and 3 inches from CGM sites. Avoid placing Pods over moles or scars.
Site Preparation
Proper skin preparation is crucial for Pod adhesion and performance. Follow these steps:
- Ensure the skin is cool and dry, free from perspiration, body oils, lotions, or sunscreen.
- Clean the chosen site thoroughly with an alcohol swab, covering an area about the size of a tennis ball. Allow the skin to air dry completely before applying the Pod. Do not blow on the site to dry it.
- For areas with significant body hair, consider clipping or shaving the site 24 hours prior to Pod application to create a smooth surface for better adhesion.
Pod Positioning
Correct positioning ensures the Pod functions as intended:
- Arm & Leg: Position the Pod vertically or at a slight angle.
- Back, Abdomen & Buttocks: Position the Pod horizontally or at a slight angle.
Pinching Up: For insertion sites with less fatty tissue, pinch the skin around the viewing window before pressing the start button on the PDM. Release the pinch once the cannula has inserted. This technique is vital for proper cannula insertion.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Oily Skin
Clean the site thoroughly with alcohol and allow it to air dry completely to remove residue that can prevent secure adhesion.
Damp Skin
Ensure the skin is completely dry before application. Allow it to air dry thoroughly; do not blow on it.
Body Hair
Clip or shave the site to create a smooth surface for Pod adhesion. If irritation is a concern, perform this 24 hours before applying the Pod.
