5. Installation
5.1 Choosing an Installation Location
Proper placement is crucial for effective detection. Install the detector in every sleeping area and on every level of your home. For optimal performance, avoid 'dead air space' where smoke and CO may not reach the detector quickly.
- On a ceiling, position the detector at least 4 inches (10 cm) from any wall.
- On a wall, position the detector between 4 and 12 inches (10-30 cm) from the ceiling.
- Avoid placing near windows, doors, or areas with high airflow that could interfere with sensor readings.
- Do not install in kitchens, bathrooms, or garages where cooking fumes, steam, or vehicle exhaust could cause false alarms.

Figure 2: Proper installation involves placing the detector away from 'dead air space' – typically 4 inches (10 cm) from a wall on a ceiling, or 20 inches (50 cm) from a ceiling on a wall.

Figure 3: Recommended installation locations include bedrooms, living rooms, studies, and garages to ensure comprehensive home safety.
5.2 Battery Installation
- Twist the mounting bracket counter-clockwise to detach it from the detector unit.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the detector.
- Insert the provided CR123A lithium battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- The detector will emit a short beep and the LED will flash, indicating it has powered on.

Figure 4: The detector uses a replaceable CR123A lithium battery, providing approximately one year of continuous power.
5.3 Mounting the Detector
- After selecting an appropriate location, hold the mounting bracket against the ceiling or wall.
- Mark the positions for the two screw holes.
- Drill holes at the marked positions and insert the wall plugs (if necessary).
- Secure the mounting bracket with the provided screws.
- Align the detector with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it locks securely into place.
6. App Setup & Wi-Fi Connection
6.1 Downloading the App
- Download the 'TuyaSmart' or 'Smart Life' app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
- Register or log in to your account.
6.2 Connecting to Wi-Fi
- Ensure your smartphone is connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The detector does not support 5 GHz networks.
- Open the TuyaSmart or Smart Life app.
- Tap '+' to add a new device.
- Select 'Security & Video Surveillance' then 'Smoke Detector (Wi-Fi)' or 'CO Detector (Wi-Fi)'.
- Follow the in-app instructions to put the detector into pairing mode (usually by pressing and holding the test button until the LED flashes rapidly).
- Enter your Wi-Fi network password when prompted.
- Wait for the app to discover and connect to the device. Once connected, the LED will stop flashing rapidly.

Figure 5: The device establishes a Wi-Fi connection using a 2.4 GHz frequency, enabling smart features.
7. Operation
7.1 LED Indicator Status
- Green LED: Flashes once every 60 seconds, indicating normal operation.
- Red LED: Flashes rapidly and the alarm sounds, indicating a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm condition.
- Yellow LED: Flashes every 40 seconds, indicating a malfunction or low battery.
7.2 LCD Display
The LCD display shows the current carbon monoxide concentration in parts per million (PPM). In normal conditions, it may show '0 PPM' or a low background reading. During a CO alarm, it will display the detected CO level.

Figure 6: The mobile application provides real-time information on carbon monoxide levels and the detector's battery status.
7.3 Testing the Alarm
It is recommended to test the alarm weekly to ensure it is functioning correctly.
- Press and hold the 'TEST' button on the detector for a few seconds.
- The alarm will sound, and the red LED will flash. This indicates the alarm is working.
- The app will also receive a test notification.
7.4 App Control and Alerts
- Real-time Alerts: Receive push notifications on your smartphone for smoke alarms, CO alarms, low battery warnings, and malfunctions.
- Remote Silencing: In case of a non-emergency alarm (e.g., cooking fumes), you can mute the alarm directly from the app.
- Status Monitoring: View the current status of the detector, including smoke concentration, CO levels, and battery life, within the app.

Figure 7: Users receive immediate push notifications on their smartphone if critical CO levels are detected, prompting quick action.

Figure 8: Alarms can be silenced remotely through the mobile application, eliminating the need to physically reach the device.
8. Maintenance
8.1 Battery Replacement
When the yellow LED flashes every 40 seconds and the app indicates a low battery, it is time to replace the CR123A lithium battery.
- Twist the detector counter-clockwise to remove it from the mounting bracket.
- Open the battery compartment.
- Remove the old battery and dispose of it according to local regulations.
- Insert a new CR123A lithium battery, observing correct polarity.
- Reattach the detector to the mounting bracket by twisting clockwise until it locks.
- Test the alarm after battery replacement.
8.2 Cleaning the Detector
Clean the alarm cover and vents once a month to remove dust and dirt that could interfere with sensor operation.
- Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently clean the exterior of the detector.
- Do not use water, cleaning solutions, or solvents, as these can damage the unit.
- Never paint the detector.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm sounds frequently without apparent smoke/CO. | False alarm due to steam, cooking fumes, dust, or improper placement. | Relocate the detector away from sources of steam/fumes. Clean the detector. Ensure proper installation distance from walls/ceilings. |
| Yellow LED flashes, and detector chirps. | Low battery or device malfunction. | Replace the CR123A battery. If the issue persists, contact customer support. |
| Detector does not connect to Wi-Fi. | Incorrect Wi-Fi password, 5 GHz network, or weak signal. | Ensure you are using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Verify password. Move detector closer to router or use a Wi-Fi extender. Re-attempt pairing. |
| No alarm during test. | Dead battery, faulty unit, or incorrect test procedure. | Replace battery. Ensure test button is pressed firmly and held. If still no alarm, replace the unit. |
| App does not receive notifications. | App notification settings disabled, phone not connected to internet, or detector not connected to Wi-Fi. | Check app notification settings. Ensure phone has internet access. Verify detector's Wi-Fi connection status in the app. |
