1. Introduction

The Zoom F8n Pro is a professional field recorder and mixer designed for filmmakers and sound professionals. It offers high-resolution 32-bit float recording at up to 192 kHz, 10 channels, and 8 XLR/TRS inputs. Key features include timecode synchronization, Ambisonics mode support, and flexible power options. 2. Setup

2.1 Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all items listed in the packing contents are present and undamaged. The package should include the F8n Pro unit, AD-19 power adapter, and this manual.

2.2 Powering the Unit

The F8n Pro supports three power sources:

  • AA Batteries: Insert 8 AA batteries into the battery compartment. Ensure correct polarity.
  • Hirose 4-pin Connector: Connect an external DC power source (9-18 volts) to the Hirose connector.
  • AC Adapter: Use the included 12-volt AD-19 AC adapter.

2.3 Inserting SD Cards

The F8n Pro features dual SDHC/SDXC card slots, supporting cards up to 1 TB. These can be used simultaneously for backup recording or sequentially for extended recording times.

  1. Locate the SD card slots on the side of the unit.
  2. Insert the SD card(s) until they click into place.
  3. To remove, push the card in slightly until it springs out.

2.4 Connecting Inputs and Outputs

The F8n Pro provides 8 combo XLR/TRS inputs, 2 TA-3 line outputs, and an auxiliary mini-jack output.

  • XLR/TRS Inputs: Connect microphones or line-level sources to inputs 1-8. Individual +24V/+48V phantom power is available.
  • Main Outputs: Use the two TA-3 outputs for main stereo mix.
  • Sub Output: Use the mini-jack auxiliary output for additional monitoring or routing.
  • Headphone Output: Connect headphones for monitoring.
  • Timecode I/O: Use standard BNC connectors for timecode synchronization.

3. Operation

3.1 Basic Recording

To begin recording, ensure your microphones or line sources are connected and input levels are set appropriately using the trim potentiometers and 6-LED level indicators. The F8n Pro records in 32-bit float/192 kHz resolution, providing extensive dynamic range.

  1. Press the REC button to start recording.
  2. Press the STOP button to end recording.
  3. Monitor audio through headphones using the dedicated headphone output.

  • Timecode: Synchronize with external devices using the BNC timecode input/output (0.2 ppm accuracy).
