1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Klipsch Reference R-40SA Dolby Atmos Elevation Surround Speakers. Please read these instructions thoroughly before using your speakers to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
The Klipsch R-40SA speakers are designed to deliver immersive sound, functioning as either elevation speakers for Dolby Atmos systems or as traditional surround speakers. They feature 4-inch TCP woofers, a 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn, and a 1-inch LTS Tweeter.
2. Safety Information
Please observe the following safety guidelines:
- Do not expose speakers to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Ensure proper ventilation around the speakers to prevent overheating.
- Use appropriate gauge speaker wire and ensure correct polarity when connecting.
- Avoid placing speakers in unstable locations where they could fall and cause injury or damage.
- Do not attempt to service the speakers yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
3. Package Contents
The Klipsch R-40SA package includes:
- (2) Klipsch R-40SA Dolby Atmos Speakers
4. Product Features
The Klipsch R-40SA speakers incorporate several design elements for audio performance:
- Dolby Atmos Enabled: Designed to reflect sound off the ceiling for overhead effects, creating an immersive soundfield. Can be placed on top of existing speakers or used as dedicated surround speakers.
- 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn: This horn design aims to provide controlled sound directivity over a wide frequency range, contributing to a precise sound stage.
- Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) Aluminum Tweeter with Kapton Suspension: The 1-inch LTS tweeter is designed to minimize distortion, offering detailed high-frequency reproduction. Aluminum is used for its light and rigid properties, enhancing efficiency and resolution.
- Spun-Copper Thermoformed Crystalline Polymer Woofers: The 4-inch TCP woofers feature angled cones for a smoother frequency response and improved accuracy.
- Cabinet Design: Features hidden fasteners, an edge-to-edge horn, and low-profile magnetic grilles for a clean appearance. The reinforced ¾-inch MDF construction with a bracing design reduces cabinet vibration for sonic accuracy.

5. Setup
5.1 Speaker Placement
The R-40SA speakers can be used in two primary configurations:
- Dolby Atmos Elevation Speakers: Place the R-40SA speakers directly on top of your front left and right (and optionally rear left and right) floorstanding or bookshelf speakers. The upward-firing drivers will reflect sound off the ceiling to create overhead audio effects.
- Surround Speakers: The speakers can also be used as traditional surround speakers, mounted on a wall or placed on stands, positioned to the sides or slightly behind the listening area.

5.2 Connecting Your Speakers
The R-40SA speakers are passive and require connection to an audio/video receiver (AVR) or amplifier. Follow these steps:
- Ensure your AVR/amplifier is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
- Use high-quality speaker wire to connect the R-40SA speakers to the appropriate speaker terminals on your AVR/amplifier.
- Match the positive (+) red terminal on the speaker to the positive (+) red terminal on your AVR/amplifier.
- Match the negative (-) black terminal on the speaker to the negative (-) black terminal on your AVR/amplifier.
- Ensure all connections are secure and there are no stray wire strands that could cause a short circuit.
- If using as Dolby Atmos elevation speakers, connect them to the "Height" or "Dolby Atmos" speaker outputs on your AVR.

6. Operation
Once connected, operate your R-40SA speakers through your AVR/amplifier. Refer to your AVR/amplifier's manual for specific instructions on speaker configuration and calibration, especially for Dolby Atmos setups.
- Speaker Calibration: Utilize your AVR's automatic speaker calibration system (e.g., Audyssey, MCACC, YPAO) to optimize sound levels, distances, and equalization for your listening environment.
- Dolby Atmos Content: To experience Dolby Atmos effects, ensure you are playing content encoded with Dolby Atmos and that your AVR is configured correctly.
7. Maintenance
To maintain the appearance and performance of your Klipsch R-40SA speakers:
- Cleaning: Dust the cabinet with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Grilles: The magnetic grilles can be removed for cleaning or for a different aesthetic. Handle them carefully to avoid damage.
- Drivers: Do not touch the speaker drivers (tweeter and woofer) as this can cause damage.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your R-40SA speakers, consider the following:
- No Sound:
- Check all speaker wire connections at both the speaker and the AVR/amplifier for proper seating and polarity.
- Ensure the correct input source is selected on your AVR/amplifier.
- Verify that the speaker outputs on your AVR/amplifier are enabled and not muted.
- Distorted Sound:
- Reduce the volume level on your AVR/amplifier.
- Check for loose speaker wire connections or frayed wires that might be shorting.
- Ensure your AVR/amplifier is not being overdriven.
- Lack of Immersive Effect (Dolby Atmos):
- Confirm your AVR is configured for Dolby Atmos and the R-40SA speakers are assigned to the correct height channels.
- Ensure you are playing actual Dolby Atmos encoded content.
- Verify speaker placement and ceiling height are within recommended guidelines for Dolby Atmos reflection.
If problems persist, consult your AVR/amplifier manual or contact Klipsch customer support.
