5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Making Espresso
- Prepare Ground Coffee: Use freshly ground espresso beans. For optimal results, grind coffee to a fine consistency suitable for espresso.
- Fill Portafilter: Place the filter basket into the portafilter. Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter basket.
- Tamp Coffee: Use a tamper to press the coffee grounds firmly and evenly. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
- Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the brew head and twist firmly to lock it into place.
- Place Cup: Position your espresso cup(s) on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
- Brew Espresso: Ensure the machine is heated and ready. Select the espresso brewing function (usually indicated by a button or dial setting). The machine will begin extracting espresso. Stop the flow once the desired volume is reached.
- Remove Portafilter: Once brewing is complete, carefully remove the portafilter by twisting it counter-clockwise. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.
5.2 Frothing Milk
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout.
- Heat Steam Wand: Turn the control dial to the steam setting. Wait for the machine to reach steaming temperature (indicator light will signal readiness). Purge any condensed water from the steam wand into the drip tray by briefly opening the steam knob.
- Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob fully. Angle the pitcher slightly to create a swirling motion. As the milk heats and expands, lower the pitcher to keep the tip just below the surface. Continue until the milk reaches the desired temperature and texture.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately after frothing, close the steam knob and wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly purge the wand again to clear any internal milk.
6. Maintenance and Cleaning
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily.
- Portafilter and Filter Basket: After each use, remove and rinse the portafilter and filter basket.
- Steam Wand: Always wipe and purge the steam wand immediately after frothing milk.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers.
6.2 Descaling
Over time, mineral deposits (limescale) can build up inside the machine, affecting performance. Descale your machine regularly, depending on water hardness and usage (e.g., every 2-3 months). Use a commercial descaling solution designed for espresso machines or a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio).
- Empty the water tank and fill it with the descaling solution.
- Place a large container under the brew head and steam wand.
- Run half of the solution through the brew head in cycles.
- Run the remaining half through the steam wand.
- After descaling, rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. Run several cycles of fresh water through both the brew head and steam wand to rinse out any descaling solution residue.
