Introduction
The Kwikset SmartCode touchpad smart lock with Home Connect technology allows for wireless communication with other smart home devices. This electronic deadbolt provides keyless entry through a backlit keypad and features SmartKey Security for enhanced protection and easy re-keying. Setup and Installation
Before installation, ensure your door's backset, cross bore, and thickness are compatible with the lock. The Kwikset 914 is designed for easy installation, programming, and use.

Installation Steps:
- Prepare the Door: Verify door dimensions and ensure the existing bore holes are clean and clear.
- Install the Latch: Insert the deadbolt latch into the door edge and secure it with screws.
- Install the Exterior Keypad: Route the cable from the exterior keypad through the door and position the keypad on the outside of the door.
- Install the Interior Assembly: Connect the cable from the exterior keypad to the interior assembly. Secure the interior assembly to the door using the provided mounting screws.
- Insert Batteries: Install the 4 AA batteries into the interior assembly's battery pack.
- Perform Door Handing Process: This step calibrates the lock to your door's orientation. Refer to the quick start guide for specific instructions on initiating this process.
Initial Programming:
After installation, program your first user code. The lock supports up to 30 customizable user codes. Consult the quick start guide for detailed programming instructions.
Operating the Lock
Keyless Entry:
To unlock the door using a user code:
- Enter your 4-8 digit user code on the backlit keypad.
- Press the Lock button (Kwikset logo) to engage the deadbolt.

Locking the Door:
- From the Exterior: Press the Lock button (Kwikset logo) on the keypad. The deadbolt will extend automatically.
- From the Interior: Turn the thumb turn on the interior assembly to the locked position.
Using the Key:
The lock can also be operated with a traditional key as a backup. Insert the key into the keyway and turn to lock or unlock the deadbolt.
Smart Home Integration (ZigBee 3.0):
This lock features ZigBee 3.0 Technology, allowing it to communicate wirelessly with compatible smart home panels and hubs such as Amazon Echo Plus, Echo 2020 (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, SmartThings Hub v3, Tuya Zigbee 3.0 Hub, Abode, and Wink. This enables remote checking of door lock status, locking/unlocking, and receiving notifications via a web-enabled device.

Maintenance
Battery Replacement:
The lock operates on 4 AA alkaline batteries. When the batteries are low, the lock will provide an audible and visual low battery warning. To replace the batteries:
- Remove the battery cover from the interior assembly (typically secured by a small screw).
- Remove the old batteries.
- Insert four new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
- Replace the battery cover.
SmartKey Security Re-keying:
The SmartKey Security feature allows you to re-key your lock yourself in seconds to work with an existing Kwikset key. This is useful if you move, lose a key, or want all your Kwikset locks to use the same key.

To re-key your lock:
- Insert your functioning key into the cylinder and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.
- Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole.
- Remove the SmartKey tool.
- Remove your functioning key.
- Insert the new key you wish to use fully into the cylinder and turn it 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
- Remove the new key. The lock is now re-keyed.
Troubleshooting
- Lock not responding to keypad: Check battery levels. Ensure batteries are inserted correctly. Perform door handing process again if recently installed or if the lock is not extending/retracting fully.
- User code not working: Verify the code is entered correctly. Ensure the code is still active and has not been deleted. Try reprogramming the code.
- Lock is noisy during operation: Some motor noise is normal for electronic deadbolts. If the noise is excessive or accompanied by operational issues, check for proper alignment of the deadbolt latch with the strike plate.
- Smart home hub connectivity issues: Ensure the lock is within range of your ZigBee hub. Check your hub's documentation for troubleshooting ZigBee device connections.
- Keypad backlight not working: This may indicate low batteries or a setting that has turned off the backlight. Check battery levels first.
