4. Operating Instructions

This first aid kit is designed for treating common minor injuries. Always refer to the included American Red Cross Emergency First Aid Guide for specific instructions and best practices for various situations. Below are general guidelines for common uses:

4.1. Treating Cuts and Scrapes

  1. Clean the Wound: Use BZK antiseptic towelettes to clean the area around the cut or scrape. If available, wash with soap and water.
  2. Apply Ointment: Apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment to the wound to prevent infection.
  3. Cover the Wound: Select an appropriately sized bandage or sterile gauze pad from the kit. Secure gauze with first aid tape if necessary. For deeper cuts, consider using butterfly wound closures before bandaging.

4.2. Addressing Minor Burns

  1. Cool the Burn: Immediately cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water for several minutes.
  2. Apply Burn Cream: Once cooled, gently apply burn cream from the kit to the affected area.
  3. Protect the Burn: Cover the burn loosely with a sterile gauze pad to protect it from contamination. Do not apply adhesive directly to the burn.

4.3. Pain and Discomfort

For minor aches, pains, or discomfort, the kit includes various oral medications:

  • Ibuprofen/Non-Aspirin: Use as directed on the individual packets for pain relief.
  • Antacid Tablets: For indigestion or heartburn, take as directed.
  • Instant Cold Pack: Activate and apply to sprains, strains, or bruises to reduce swelling and pain.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures your first aid kit remains effective and ready for use.

Periodically check the expiry dates of all medications and sterile products. Discard any expired items and replace them promptly. A good practice is to check the kit every 6-12 months.

5.2. Restocking Supplies

After each use, or during your regular checks, restock any used or depleted items. Ensure replacements are of similar quality and type to maintain the kit's comprehensive nature.

5.3. Cleaning and Storage

Keep the plastic case clean and dry. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth if needed. Store the kit in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of small children, unless it is intended for immediate emergency access by adults.
