An OTC Hearing Aid Instruction Manual

Battery Type: 312 Battery

Important Warnings and Cautions

Warning: Age Restriction

If you are younger than 18, do not use this. You should consult a doctor, preferably an ear-nose-throat doctor (ENT), as your condition requires specialized care. Over-the-counter hearing aids are intended only for users aged 18 or older.

This OTC hearing aid is for users aged 18 and older. Individuals under 18 with hearing loss should see a doctor, preferably an ENT, for potential medical testing and management. Hearing loss can impact speech and learning, making professional fitting and ongoing care important.

Warning: When to See a Doctor

Please consult a doctor, preferably an ENT, if you experience any of the following:

  • Your ear has a birth defect or unusual shape, or was injured/deformed in an accident.
  • You have seen blood, pus, or fluid from your ear in the past 6 months.
  • Your ear feels painful or uncomfortable.
  • You have excessive ear wax or suspect something is in your ear.
  • You experience sudden dizziness or a feeling of spinning/swaying (vertigo).
  • Your hearing changed suddenly in the past 6 months.
  • Your hearing fluctuates (gets worse then better).
  • You have worse hearing in one ear.
  • You hear ringing or buzzing in only one ear.

Warning: Pain During Insertion

This hearing aid should not cause pain when inserting. Remove the device immediately if it causes pain or discomfort. Try re-insertion following the instructions. If pain persists, contact the manufacturer. If discomfort does not resolve, consult your hearing healthcare professional. You may also report adverse events to the FDA.

Caution: Not Hearing Protection

Remove this device if you experience overly loud sounds, whether short or long-lasting. For loud environments, use appropriate hearing protection instead of this device. If you would normally use earplugs in a loud situation, remove this hearing aid and use earplugs.

Caution: Sound Output Comfort

The sound output should not be uncomfortable or painful. Turn down the volume or remove the device if the sound is uncomfortably loud. If you consistently need to lower the volume, your device may require adjustment.

Caution: Foreign Object in Ear

If any part of your hearing aid, such as the ear-tip, gets stuck in your ear and cannot be easily removed with fingers, seek medical help promptly. Do not use tweezers or cotton swabs, as they can push the object further into the ear, potentially causing serious injury to the eardrum or ear canal.

Note: If You Remain Concerned

If you continue to experience difficulties or concerns with your hearing after using this device, consult with a hearing healthcare professional.

Note: Expectations When Starting

Hearing aids can benefit many individuals with hearing loss. However, they do not restore normal hearing and may still present challenges in noisy environments. Hearing aids do not prevent or improve hearing impairment caused by physiological conditions. Many users find a few weeks of consistent use helps them adjust. Training or counseling can also enhance the benefits.

For hearing loss in both ears, using hearing aids in both ears may be more beneficial, especially in situations requiring focused listening, such as noisy environments.

Note: Reporting to FDA

Report any problems, injuries, or malfunctions to the FDA as soon as possible. These are termed "adverse events" and may include skin irritation, device injury (cuts, scratches, burns), pieces stuck in the ear, or sudden worsening of hearing loss. Instructions for reporting are available at https://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch or by calling 1-800-FDA-1088. A form can also be downloaded for mailing.

Your hearing aid at a glance

Components:

  • Microphone (mic): The opening where sound enters the hearing aid.
  • Program control: A button used to cycle through different listening programs.
  • Volume control: Buttons to adjust the sound volume up and down.
  • Battery door: Serves as the on/off switch and provides access to the battery compartment.
  • Slim tube: A thin tube connecting the hearing aid to the dome, delivering amplified sound into the ear canal.
  • Dome: A clear, soft silicone tip that fits into the ear canal for sound delivery.
  • Retention guard: A small loop designed to help secure the dome and tubing in the ear.

Turning on / off

The battery door acts as the on & off switch:

  • OFF (fully open): The device is turned off.
  • OFF (partly open): The device is turned off.
  • ON (fully closed): The device is turned on.

Low battery warning: You will hear a "low battery" voice prompt. The hearing aid will shut down after a "replace battery" voice prompt.

Battery size: 312 zinc-air (identified by a brown tab).

Battery Safety Precautions:

  • Do not dispose of batteries in household trash.
  • Do not recharge batteries, as this could result in injury.
  • Keep batteries away from high temperatures.
  • Keep batteries away from children and pets.
  • Do not carry batteries loose in your pocket or purse.
  • Do not place batteries in your mouth; if swallowed, consult a physician immediately.

Inserting a new battery

To insert or replace the battery:

  1. Gently swing open the battery door with your fingernail and push out the old battery.
  2. Remove the plastic tab from the new battery. Wait 1 minute for the battery to reach full power before using or testing it.
  3. Line up the battery's plus "[+]" sign so that it is facing up inside the battery door.
  4. Close the battery door gently.

Putting on your hearing aid

  1. Clean your ear and hearing aid before every use.
  2. We recommend using a mirror to practice. First, place the hearing aid body over the top of your ear.
  3. Hold the wire near the dome and gently push the dome into your ear canal. Pull up and back on the cartilage of the ear to ease insertion.
  4. Rest the retention guard in the bowl of your ear. You can trim the retention guard to a comfortable length or remove it altogether.

Handle your hearing aid with care. Do not pull on or bend the tube, as this may cause damage.

Note: The outer shell of the hearing aid is laser marked with "Left" or "Right" indicators.

Volume & Program Control

Controls:

  • Program Control: Button to select listening programs.
  • Volume Up: Increases volume.
  • Volume Down: Decreases volume.

Adjust the volume using the volume up/down buttons. Your device has 10 volume levels. You will hear a confirmation when you reach the minimum or maximum volume settings.

The program control is located above the volume controls. Choose between four program settings by pressing the program button. You will hear a voice prompt indicating the selected program: 'program 1', 'program 2', 'program 3', or 'program 4'.

Program Descriptions:

  • 1 Everyday: Daily setting – use in most listening situations.
  • 2 Meeting: Talk setting – use when having conversation.
  • 3 Music: Music setting – use when listening to music.
  • 4 Noise: Noise setting – reduces low frequency amplification, often helpful in noisy situations.

See the "Tuned Hearing App" section for instructions on how to adjust volume, environment, and equalizer settings using your smartphone.

The app features an equalizer with sliders for Bass, Middle, and Treble adjustments.

Airplane Mode

To enable/disable Airplane Mode:

  1. To enable airplane mode, close the battery door while holding the volume up control for six seconds.
  2. To disable airplane mode, open and close the battery door.

Slim Tubes

The slim tube should rest against the side of your head and allow the dome to remain comfortably in your ear canal.

A Size 2 slim tube will already be attached to your hearing aid. Two additional sizes are included: Size 1 (shortest) and Size 3 (longest).

Removing & attaching the slim tube

For optimal performance, replace slim tubes every three months.

How to remove the slim tube:

  1. Grasp the base of the slim tube near the top of the hearing aid.
  2. Twist the base of the tubing 90° to the left.
  3. Pull the base away from the hearing aid.

How to attach the slim tube:

  1. Line up the top of the aid and the tubing base.
  2. Gently push the base of the tubing onto the aid until it snaps into position.

Tube size indicator: Blue writing on tube indicates left ear tubing size; Red writing on tube indicates right ear tubing size.

How to clean the slim tube

  1. Remove the slim tube from the hearing aid.
  2. Remove the dome from the tube.
  3. Insert the cleaning tool into the base at the end of the slim tube and thread it all the way through so it comes out the other end.
  4. Wipe off any debris on the end of the cleaning tool before pulling it back through the tube.

Protecting your aid

  • Open the battery door when not in use. Remove the battery when storing for extended periods.
  • Always store your hearing aid in its case, in a clean and dry environment. A UV Dry Box can also be used for safe storage.
  • Never wear your hearing aid in the shower, bath, sauna, or swimming. Keep it protected from rain.
  • If the hearing aid becomes wet, remove the battery and ensure the aid is dry before using. Do not dry in an oven or microwave.
  • We recommend regularly drying your hearing aid. You can purchase a sanitizing UV Dry Box from audicus.com/accessories. Remove the battery before placing it in the UV Dry Box.
  • Keep your hearing aid away from high temperatures. Do not leave it in direct sunlight or wear while using a hair dryer.
  • Keep hearing aids away from children and pets.

Finding the right dome

The dome is the small, clear, hypoallergenic silicone tip on the end of the hearing aid that is inserted into your ear.

Domes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The proper choice of dome style and size can help with comfort and sound quality.

Note: New devices come pre-fit with a medium dome.

Dome styles and sizes:

Domes are available in Small, Medium, and Large sizes, and in Open, Closed, and Double styles. Take time to find which size dome is right for you. The dome should fit snugly in your ear canal and be inserted far enough to not be visible.

If a dome is mis-sized or the wrong style, you may hear feedback (a squealing or whistling sound). This can usually be resolved with a different dome size or style.

Order new domes at audicus.com/supplies.

Dome Maintenance:

  • Clean your domes regularly.
  • Replace old, brittle, discolored, or damaged domes, or if they pull off the hearing aid easily.
  • Earwax production varies per person. Replace domes as needed, at least every 2–3 months.
  • Always ensure that a new dome is firmly attached to the receiver before inserting into your ear.

FDA information

Use your hearing aid all day long

The best way to ensure better hearing is to practice listening with your hearing aid until you are able to wear it comfortably all day. Generally, infrequent use does not provide the full benefit of amplification.

Your hearing aid will not restore normal hearing or prevent/improve hearing impairment resulting from a physiological condition. Hearing aids help you make better use of your residual hearing. The use of hearing aids is part of hearing rehabilitation; auditory training and lip reading instruction may also be required.

Possible side effects

If you experience discomfort, contact Audicus or your hearing care professional for modification at the point of irritation. A hearing aid may cause accelerated accumulation of cerumen (earwax). In rare cases, the material may cause ear discharge, allergic reaction, or other unusual conditions. Please seek immediate consultation with a physician if these conditions occur.
