Newhouse Hardware CHIMEBASE2

Newhouse Hardware CHIMEBASE2 Doorbell Chime Mechanism Instruction Manual

Model: CHIMEBASE2

1. Introduction and Overview

The Newhouse Hardware CHIMEBASE2 is a doorbell chime mechanism designed as a replacement or new installation component for wired doorbell systems. This unit provides two distinct chime melodies: a 2-note chime for the front door and a single-note chime for the back door, enabling clear identification of which door requires attention. Please note that this product includes only the chime mechanism base; the decorative cover is sold separately. For a compatible cover, search for model CHM3DCOVER. For the chime base and cover together, search for CHM3D.

The CHIMEBASE2 requires a 16-volt AC transformer (not included) for operation. Compatible transformers include Newhouse Hardware models #16TR or #3TRAN. This chime base is designed to be compatible with most Nutone models, including LA11BG, LA11WH, KA10, LA109, KB10, L12, L14, CD130, LA110, LA111, LA114, LA116, LA117, LA119, LA12, LA13, LA130, LA14, LA140, LA141, LA144, LA148, LA14WH, LA143, LA149, LA30SAVY, LA37, LA15, LA9, LB13, LB12, LB14, LD21, VG130, and VG190.

2. Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power to the doorbell circuit at the main circuit breaker before attempting any installation, wiring, or maintenance. Failure to do so can result in electrical shock or serious injury.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and comply with local electrical codes.
  • This device is intended for low-voltage wired doorbell systems only. Do not connect to high-voltage lines.

3. Package Contents

  • 1 x Newhouse Hardware CHIMEBASE2 Doorbell Chime Mechanism (Base Only)

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Pre-Installation

  1. Turn off power to your existing doorbell circuit at the main circuit breaker.
  2. Remove the cover from your old doorbell chime unit.
  3. Carefully disconnect the wires from the old chime unit, noting which wire was connected to which terminal (e.g., Front, Rear, Transformer). It is recommended to label the wires.
  4. Remove the old chime unit from the wall.

4.2 Mounting the Chime Base

  1. Position the CHIMEBASE2 in the desired location. The dimensions of the base are approximately 6.75 inches (L) x 4.75 inches (W) x 1.75 inches (D).
  2. Use appropriate screws (not included) to secure the chime base to the wall through the mounting holes. Ensure it is firmly attached.

4.3 Wiring Connections

Refer to the internal wiring diagram on the chime mechanism and the image below for guidance.

  1. Connect the wire from your 16V AC transformer to the terminal labeled TRANS.
  2. Connect the wire from your front doorbell button to the terminal labeled FRONT.
  3. If you have a rear doorbell button, connect its wire to the terminal labeled REAR. If you only have one doorbell, you may leave the REAR terminal unconnected.
  4. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

4.4 Power On and Test

  1. Once all wiring is complete and secure, restore power to the doorbell circuit at the main circuit breaker.
  2. Press your front doorbell button. The chime should produce a 2-note melody.
  3. If you have a rear doorbell button, press it. The chime should produce a single-note melody.
  4. If the chime does not operate correctly, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

5. Operating Instructions

The Newhouse Hardware CHIMEBASE2 operates automatically when a doorbell button is pressed. It is designed to differentiate between front and rear door presses:

  • Front Door: Pressing the front doorbell button will activate a distinctive 2-note chime melody.
  • Rear Door: Pressing the rear doorbell button will activate a single-note chime melody.

This allows you to easily identify which door a visitor is at without needing to check.

6. Maintenance

The CHIMEBASE2 is designed for minimal maintenance. However, if you experience issues with the chime mechanism, particularly sticking plungers, follow these steps:

  • Cleaning Sticking Plungers: Ensure power is disconnected at the circuit breaker. Place a few drops of non-flammable cleaning fluid (e.g., electrical contact cleaner) on the plungers. Work the plungers up and down gently until they move freely. DO NOT OIL PLUNGERS, as oil can attract dust and worsen the problem.
  • General Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exterior of the chime base with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Ensure power is off before cleaning.
