4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the DY4100 tester.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert six 1.5V batteries (AA size, not included) and one 12V battery (included) into their respective slots, ensuring correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
The DY4100 uses three terminals for earth resistance measurement: E (Earth), P (Potential), and C (Current). For earth voltage measurement, use the E and V terminals.
- Connect the green test cable to the 'E' terminal on the tester.
- Connect the yellow test cable to the 'P' terminal on the tester.
- Connect the red test cable to the 'C' terminal on the tester.
- For earth voltage measurement, connect the green test cable to 'E' and a single red/yellow test cable to 'V'.

5. Operation
5.1 Powering On/Off
Rotate the function dial to any measurement range (e.g., 20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω, or EARTH VOLTAGE) to power on the device. To power off, rotate the dial to the 'OFF' position.
5.2 Earth Voltage Measurement (0-30V)
- Connect the green test lead to the 'E' terminal and a single test lead (e.g., red) to the 'V' terminal.
- Rotate the function dial to 'EARTH VOLTAGE'.
- The LCD will display the measured earth voltage. The measurement takes approximately 2 seconds.
5.3 Earth Resistance Measurement (20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω)
For accurate earth resistance measurement, the three-point method is typically used. This involves the main earth electrode (E), a potential electrode (P), and a current electrode (C).
- Drive the two auxiliary earth rods into the ground at appropriate distances from the main earth electrode. The potential electrode (P) should be placed between the main earth electrode (E) and the current electrode (C).
- Connect the green test lead to the main earth electrode (E).
- Connect the yellow test lead to the potential electrode (P).
- Connect the red test lead to the current electrode (C).
- Rotate the function dial to the desired resistance range (20Ω, 200Ω, or 2000Ω). Start with the highest range if the resistance is unknown.
- Press the 'Test' button. The 'OK' indicator light will illuminate if the measurement is stable.
- Read the earth resistance value from the LCD display. The measurement takes approximately 5 seconds.
- Use the 'Hold' button to freeze the displayed reading. Press again to release.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
To clean the instrument, wipe the casing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the instrument is powered off and disconnected from all test leads before cleaning.
6.2 Storage
When not in use, store the DY4100 Digital Earth Tester in its carrying bag and case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if the instrument will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
6.3 Battery Replacement
If the low battery indicator appears on the LCD, replace the 1.5V batteries promptly. If the display is dim or unresponsive, check both the 1.5V and 12V batteries.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Low or dead batteries; incorrect battery installation. | Replace all 1.5V batteries and check the 12V battery. Ensure correct polarity during installation. |
| Unstable or erratic readings | Poor contact with earth electrodes; high resistance in test leads; environmental interference. | Ensure good contact between test leads and electrodes. Check test leads for damage. Relocate electrodes if necessary to avoid interference. |
| "OL" or overload indication | Resistance value exceeds selected range; excessive voltage. | Switch to a higher resistance range. Ensure input voltage is within specified limits (0-30V for earth voltage). |
| Instrument does not power on | Batteries are completely dead; function dial not set to a measurement mode. | Replace batteries. Rotate the function dial to any measurement range. |
