2. Connecting to Audio Equipment

The TG D70 features a 3-pin XLR connector. Connect a balanced XLR cable from the microphone to your audio mixer, audio interface, or preamplifier's microphone input. Ensure a secure connection at both ends.

3. Optimal Placement for Kick Drum

For kick drum applications, the TG D70 is typically placed inside the drum, near the beater head for attack, or closer to the resonant head for more low-end resonance. Experiment with placement to achieve the desired sound. The hypercardioid pattern helps reject bleed from other instruments.

Operating

1. Gain Staging

Adjust the input gain (preamp gain) on your mixer or interface until the signal is strong but not clipping. The TG D70 is a dynamic microphone and does not require phantom power.

2. Polar Pattern Characteristics

The TG D70 features a hypercardioid polar pattern, which provides excellent off-axis rejection. This means it primarily picks up sound from directly in front of it, minimizing unwanted sound from the sides and rear. This characteristic is ideal for isolating the kick drum sound in a busy stage or studio environment.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the microphone grille or connector. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

Storage

When not in use, store the microphone in its supplied storage bag or a protective case to shield it from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound Output
  • Cable not connected properly.
  • Faulty XLR cable.
  • Input gain too low on mixer/interface.
  • Mixer/interface input not selected.
  • Check all cable connections.
  • Try a different XLR cable.
  • Increase input gain.
  • Ensure correct input channel is selected and unmuted.
Poor Sound Quality / Distortion
  • Input gain too high (clipping).
  • Incorrect microphone placement.
  • External interference.
  • Reduce input gain until signal is clean.
  • Adjust microphone position relative to the sound source.
  • Ensure cables are not near power lines or other sources of interference.
Excessive Feedback
  • Microphone too close to speakers.
  • Monitor volume too high.
  • Incorrect polar pattern usage.
  • Reposition microphone further from speakers.
  • Reduce monitor volume.
  • Utilize the hypercardioid pattern by pointing the microphone directly at the source and away from monitors.
