Setup and First Use
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the skillets from their packaging. Inspect for any damage.
- Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the skillets thoroughly with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. Rinse well and dry completely. This removes any manufacturing residues.
- Pre-seasoning (Not Required): Scanpan Pro S+ skillets feature a durable nonstick coating and do not require traditional seasoning.
Operating Instructions
Cooking with Your Skillets
- Heat Settings: Use low to medium heat for most cooking. The STRATANIUM+ surface is highly efficient and retains heat well. High heat should only be used for boiling water or reducing sauces, and only for short periods. Overheating can damage the nonstick coating over time.
- Oil/Fat Usage: While the nonstick surface allows for cooking with little to no oil, a small amount of cooking oil or butter can enhance flavor and browning. Avoid aerosol cooking sprays as they can leave a residue that may affect nonstick performance.
- Utensils: Scanpan Pro S+ skillets are metal utensil safe. However, for prolonged life of the nonstick surface, it is recommended to use silicone, wood, or plastic utensils. Avoid sharp objects that could scratch the surface.
- Oven Use: These skillets are oven-safe up to 500°F (260°C). Always use oven mitts when handling hot pans.
- Stovetop Compatibility: Compatible with gas and electric stovetops. Ensure the pan base is centered on the burner for even heating.
Searing and Deglazing
The microtextured STRATANIUM+ cooking surface is designed for exceptional searing and deglazing. Achieve a perfect sear by preheating the pan on medium heat for a few minutes before adding food. For deglazing, add a small amount of liquid (wine, broth, water) to the hot pan after cooking to loosen browned bits from the bottom, creating flavorful sauces.
Care and Maintenance
- Cool Down: Always allow the skillets to cool completely before washing. Submerging a hot pan in cold water can cause warping.
- Hand Washing: For best results and to prolong the life of your nonstick coating, hand washing with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth is recommended.
- Dishwasher Safe: While these skillets are dishwasher safe, frequent dishwasher use may dull the exterior finish over time.
- Stubborn Food Residue: For stubborn food residue, fill the pan with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then clean with a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads.
- Storage: Store skillets carefully to prevent scratching the nonstick surface. If stacking, place a soft cloth or pan protector between them.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Food sticking to the pan. | Pan not preheated sufficiently; too high heat; residue buildup from cooking sprays. | Preheat pan properly on medium heat. Avoid excessive high heat. Do not use aerosol cooking sprays. Clean thoroughly to remove any residue. |
| Pan warping or deforming. | Sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). | Always allow the pan to cool down naturally before washing. Do not place a hot pan under cold water. |
| Nonstick coating appears dull or discolored. | Buildup of food particles or oil residue; frequent dishwasher use. | Clean thoroughly with warm, soapy water. For stubborn buildup, boil water with a few tablespoons of white vinegar in the pan, then wash. Hand washing is recommended for maintaining appearance. |
