Model: CSM1043_S

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the FERM Precision Circular Saw 500W. This manual provides important information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your new tool. Please read this manual thoroughly before first use and keep it for future reference.

The FERM Precision Circular Saw 500W is a powerful and compact tool designed for precise cutting tasks. It features variable speed control and comes with a set of guide rails for accurate and straight cuts. The included three saw blades allow for immediate use across various materials.

2. Safety Instructions

Always observe the following basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

  • Work Area Safety: Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
  • Personal Safety: Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
  • Service: Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Specific Circular Saw Safety Warnings

  • Hold the tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a "live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.
  • Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
  • Wear eye protection. Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields.
  • Keep hands away from the cutting area and the blade. Keep your second hand on the auxiliary handle, or motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade.
  • Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the workpiece.
  • Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than a full tooth of the blade should be visible below the workpiece.
  • Never hold the workpiece in your hands or across your leg while cutting. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform. It is important to support the workpiece properly to minimize body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control.

5. Setup

5.1 Attaching/Changing the Saw Blade

  1. Ensure the saw is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Press and hold the spindle lock button.
  3. Using the provided hex key, loosen the blade retaining screw by turning it counter-clockwise.
  4. Carefully lift the lower blade guard and remove the old blade.
  5. Place the new blade onto the spindle, ensuring the teeth are pointing in the direction of rotation (indicated by an arrow on the saw and blade).
  6. Tighten the blade retaining screw clockwise while holding the spindle lock button. Do not overtighten.
  7. Release the spindle lock button and check that the blade is securely fastened and rotates freely.

5.2 Assembling and Securing Guide Rails

The guide rails provide precise, straight cuts, especially for longer workpieces.

  1. Connect the two guide rail sections using the provided connector piece. Ensure they are firmly joined and aligned.
  2. Place the assembled guide rail on your workpiece, aligning it with your desired cutting line.
  3. Use the included clamps to secure the guide rail to the workpiece or workbench. Ensure the rail is stable and will not shift during cutting.
  4. Slide the circular saw onto the guide rail. The base plate of the saw is designed to fit snugly onto the rail.

5.3 Connecting Dust Extraction

For a cleaner work environment and improved visibility of the cutting line, connect a vacuum cleaner to the dust extraction port.

  • Locate the dust extraction port on the saw.
  • Attach a suitable vacuum hose to the port. Ensure a secure connection to prevent dust leakage.

6. Operating

6.1 Setting Cutting Depth

The cutting depth can be adjusted up to a maximum of 22 mm.

  1. Loosen the depth adjustment lever/knob.
  2. Move the base plate up or down to achieve the desired cutting depth. Ensure that the blade extends slightly below the workpiece.
  3. Tighten the depth adjustment lever/knob securely.

6.2 Adjusting Variable Speed

This saw features variable speed control, allowing you to optimize the cutting speed for different materials.

  • Locate the variable speed control dial.
  • Turn the dial to select the appropriate speed for your material. Lower speeds are generally suitable for harder materials or when more control is needed, while higher speeds are for softer materials.

6.3 Making a Cut

  1. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the guide rail (if used) is properly aligned and secured.
  2. Plug the saw into a suitable power outlet.
  3. Hold the saw firmly with both hands, one on the main handle and the other on the auxiliary handle.
  4. Press the lock-off button, then press the on/off switch to start the saw. Allow the blade to reach full speed before beginning the cut.
  5. Slowly and steadily guide the saw along the cutting line. Do not force the saw; let the blade do the work. Maintain constant pressure and feed rate.
  6. Once the cut is complete, release the on/off switch and allow the blade to stop completely before lifting the saw from the workpiece.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your circular saw.

  • Cleaning: After each use, unplug the tool and clean it with a soft cloth. Remove any dust or debris from the ventilation openings and around the blade guard. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Blade Inspection: Regularly inspect the saw blade for sharpness and damage. A dull or damaged blade can cause kickback and reduce cutting efficiency. Replace blades as necessary.
  • Carbon Brushes: The motor is equipped with carbon brushes. If the motor sparks excessively or the tool stops working, the carbon brushes may need replacement. This should be done by a qualified technician.
  • Cord Inspection: Check the power cord for any signs of damage, cuts, or fraying. If damaged, have it repaired by a qualified professional to avoid electrical hazards.
  • Storage: Store the tool in its original storage case in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.
